Back in June, while looking for a bowl of good, authentic, menudo(with pata and all!) I turned to Unilocal and learned of: Menudo Y Barbacoa La Guera, which apparently comes highly recommended. The website was a bust, as was the phone number. Hm. I drove out anyway and figured it’d be worth the drive if it was actually open. I showed up do an empty restaurant with a dark kitchen. Double Hm. I was informed by a lady in the kitchen that she was the NEW owner and that she would have a new number and a new name out front by the following weekend. Okay. Cash only since she was just getting her bearings. She did explain that the cook was the same as the one from the previous well-to-do restaurant: La Guera. In that case, I went for it. I ordered 2 bowls of menudo(which my picky parents loved), an order of green chilaquiles, and 2lbs of barbacoa(made from lamb here) with consome(broth) on the side. The barbacoa comes with handmade, oversized, corn tortillas. 2 tacos in and I’m done! The barbacoa is so flavorful and tender… it makes me happy. Pour over some of their housemade, delicious salsas from their self-serve bar, and you’re set. I went back today(3mo later) and sure enough, the name has changed, there’s a new number now, but sadly, still CASHONLY, so be warned. Food is just as delicious. This time I grabbed another green chilaquiles plate and 3lbs of barbacoa… that ran about $ 60, but fed 6 very hungry with enough leftovers to feed 3 or 4 more. I should mention that barbacoa and menudo is served on Sundays only. Look for the banners outside and don’t be discouraged by the dim lit kitchen/interior…they’re just saving money waiting for customers to show. Personally, I’d call ahead if its a to-go order since both times its taken me about 30min to get my food being the only customer. Also, I’m pretty sure they’re Spanish speaking only: X Recap: Pros: Barbacoa, Menudo, and chilaquiles are amazing! Cons: Slow service, cash only.
