Imagine spending eight hours on the beach. You are dirty, sweaty, tired and sleepy. You get to the hotel and check in with your kids. The kids searched endlessly for the remote control, never found it. You pick up the hotel phone to call the front desk, it doesn’t work. So you then try to troubleshoot on why the TV won’t work because the kids can’t do without Animal Planet. Ugh, not working. You call the front desk by holding the cord in the phone receiver. A very nice woman says I will bring you a remote. Fifteen minutes later she called to ask what kind of TV you have in your room. Another 15 minutes later, she brings a remote control and it doesn’t work. She says, «Can you wait a half hour, my husband will come fix the TV?» After 45 minutes, I decide to call down and say forget it. Not worth having a strange man in my room after 10:00 p.m. The room was decent and clean. The woman at the front desk was pleasant, but I felt since I checked in after 9:00 p.m. I was given the worst room the hotel had to offer. I didn’t have all the amenities I paid(too much) for and I am very disappointed. The two star rating is for the kindness of the woman at the front desk.

The staff was friendly and accommodating, but the motel needs to be updated. Not sure how long ago Rodeway took over from Days Inn, but judging from Robert’s post, at least a couple of months. The sidewalk patches are still unpainted. The room was clean, but you could tell that the bedding had been around for a while. No burn marks or bugs, which would send my wife out of her mind. Just spent one night here before our cruise, so it is an inexpensive add on to the trip, since we could not get a flight from CA that would arrive early enough in Houston to make it to Galveston in time. I did ask the front desk for an envelope and they gladly accommodated me, but it had the Days Inn logo. If you need an inexpensive place to stay before the cruise, this works and they’ll let you leave your car here at no charge until your cruise is over.

Judging by the name that the Wifi router broadcasts, this was until recently part of another Hotel chain. Based on this location I have a very low opinion of Rodeway Inn, as evidence suggests that«real» chains bail out and Rodeway inn gives the new proprietors a few cheap looking signs and apparently has low or no standards for what qualifies to wear their name. One door card didn’t work at all, the other required many insertations. The Foodmart /Gas Station in front of this facility is undergoing some sort of slow rehab and is closed and not too pretty. The residential neighborhood surrounding it is dominated by empty lots of unfortunate folks wiped out by Hurricane Ike back in 2008. The delightful bait store, also near by, is also closed. The back entrance off a residential street that it might behoove one to use so as not to get rear ended out on the main drag, has empty shell signs and dangling wires suggesting that the departing Hotel chain had a bit more pride. The coke machines are all encased in heavy galvanized bar cages. This certainly tells one that one is in a swanky neighborhood, but setting aside for a moment the interesting question of whether this is to prevent cash thievery of thievery of the entire machine, ours did not work at all. They not that long ago hired some extreme low bidder, or perhaps picked up a trowel themselves, to sally forth and smear mortar patch liberally on exterior stairs and walking surfaces. One can tell by looking at it that it has been there long enough that if they were going to paint it, they would have by now, but instead one gets to admire the craftmanship of light gray smears upon the burgundy of the original chain. We knew we were getting a smoking room. I do not think however that this means it is ok to present us with a blanket with an obvious burn on it, matching the toilet seat. The TV was an ancient tube TV that sat so low in the furniture that when watching it from the bed one’s own feet dominated the screen. So I won’t give it a 1 Star, there was no toilet water on the floor or feces on the sheets or anything, but the price here should drop to rock bottom to raise the value for the dollar.
