Fake reviews here. Food is not fresh and the place is not clean. The food is questionable in terms of freshness, taste and when it was cooked.

The food isn’t the typical oily Chinese restaurant food. Get the bean sprouts, spicy boiled fish, and. you know what? Order anything off the menu. They’re all good.

A wide variety of Chinese foods for cheap. One side of the menu has dishes for $ 7 each or 3 for $ 19.50+tax. We got the General Zhou tofu, salted meats with taro pot, and spicy poached fish. All were delicious. We came on a Thursday evening and the restaurant was packed. Not with people, but with orders, as most people order takeout(as did my family and I). I would come again, but define tell call in first if you know what you want to order. The owner was obviously stressed taking my order and it made me feel a little anxious as well.

Not sure why the rating of this place is so high, probably it’s because the price is super cheap. You have to understand what you pay is what you get. THEINGREDIENTSTHEYUSEISNOTFRESH. I actually had it couple times(I always give a restaurant a second or even 3rd chance) but non of them were pleasant. I had diarrhea two times after having their foods. The taste of beef was a bit sour, fish is mushy(I understand they use frozen fish filet for sure, but probably it was frozen for ages to have that texture), some veggie had rancid taste. However, some of their dishes are always good. But I will never take the risk and WILLNOTGOBACK to try it agian.

Love the food here. Over the last 10 years, I’ve tried essentially every Chinese restaurant in Fremont, and this is definitely one of my favorites. Pretty much everything tastes great and is well-priced, but do mind that their foods tend to be quite oily.

Probably the worst dine in experience. Upon walking into the restaurant I was immediately turned off by the environment. Dirty, confined, and overall appearing unsanitary. We decided on take out and ordering out food to go. 3 dishes for $ 21 bucks doesn’t sound bad until you see the portions. Complete rip off, the dishes were cooked with so much sugar and not enough meat, vegetables, sauce. Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I was skeptical at first, but I should have known it would be solid, authentic food for the following reasons: 1. It’s a hole in the wall 2. The only space to wait for takeout is outside, where you can smell the kitchen grease and almost feel it in the air 3. The lady at the counter is no nonsense 4. Cash only 5. Food comes out in 10 min or less Now onto the carbs… 1. Shanghai stir fried noodles(上海炒粗麵): good texture, lots of flavor, not super oily 2. Rice cakes(炒年糕): so often, this stuff doesn’t have any flavor or is too soft, but their texture was chewy with a bite, and each piece had absorbed a ton of pork flavor from the shredded pork and cabbage in the dish 3. Scallion oil dry noodles(蔥油拌麵): my recent obsession. Their noodles had such a good bite. At first, I was skeptical because it looked like very little sauce for the amount of noodles, but a little of that dried shrimp green onion sauce goes a long way, and this is the best version of these noodles I’ve had at any Shanghainese place in the South Bay /peninsula area recently. This noodle dish tends to be oily anywhere you get it since it’s technically a green onion oil noodle dish. This one was definitely pooling oil at the bottom, but it didn’t leave that gross oil coating in your mouth feel I’ll definitely be going back for their noodle dishes!

I’ve been here a couple times with my brother. We always get honey walnut prawns as it is a family favorite. I would rank it average amongst the hundreds of other honey walnut prawns I have tried. Ever since the first time we came here when we tried the sweet and sour fried fish, we would always order it. It’s really good. The fish has a nice fluffy crispy texture on the outside and then a soft tender inside. The sauce complements the fish really well. My only gripe about this dish is that there are too many bell peppers and onions!!! Like every other sweet and sour dish. I’ve also tried another fish dish. I forgot what it was called but it was basically fish filet in a sauce that kind of tastes like the black bean sauce which clams are cooked in. We also tried some mixed vegetable dish. It was okay.

This place was anything but a hometown favorite. Walked in with a party of 10 into their empty restaurant on a Sunday evening… You would think that the grumpy old lady behind the counter would be jumping for joy that she actually had customers. Instead, she was upset that we had a large group and insisted that we go next door for ramen instead. When we found out it was cash only, we were forced to go else where anyway. She didn’t hesitate to the shut the door behind us as we walked out. I love Asian food and have endured and even expect crappy service, but I was shocked to find how rude the service was and how any restaurant owner would turn away good business. I can’t comment on the food because I wasn’t given a chance to even sit down, but I would NEVER come back based on the awful treatment. Btw, this is my first Unilocal review ever and she pissed me off enough to take 5 mins of my life that I will never get back to share my sh*tty experience.

Good value on the 3 for 20. Pretty much hole in wall and cash only gives good prices. Sweet sour fish is very good. Walnut shrimp is good but not the best. Located across from Ohlone on South entrance.

Nothing special. Small portion, same as any Chinese restaurant that serves three dishes for $ 20. I live close to Lung Lung, and felt much better than this place. I try.

When my mom doesn’t feel like cooking, we go here to get takeout. 3 dishes for ~$ 20 including tax! We have ordered: — Chef Zhao tofu: the tofu is fried, and there’s minced pork sauce poured onto it. The sauce is somewhat too glutinous for my liking, but the flavor is pretty good and the tofu is perfectly fried. — Spicy poached fish filet: Good flavor, lots of fish, and could do with more vegetables. It’s a good dish though, and we get this almost every time we order from here. We always have leftovers and cook noodles with the leftover sauce. — Prawn with salt and pepper: there aren’t that many pieces of shrimp, but they do give a sufficient amount of onions to go with it! You can’t really go wrong with this dish though; it’s basically deep fried shrimp with salt and pepper. — Beef with tofu: I thought it was weird for it to be not spicy, and it wasn’t what I thought it would be. But, it was still good! The beef is well-cooked, and the tofu is soft. It could be more flavorful though. — Spicy beef: The flavor is pretty much the same as the spicy poached fish filet. The beef is tender and flavorful, although like the fish, it could do with more vegetables. Lots of sauce! My only complaint is that the food tends to be a bit on the oilier side, but the flavors are pretty good, the portions are decent, and the food is generally pretty good!

This was the first time me and my boyfriend had ever been here and I have to say this is the WORST food I have ever had. It said 4 stars are you kidding me. Of we found a hair in are food, the shrimp with walnut was so nasty it looked like the tossed it in mayo and it was all soggy oh and it only had 2 walnuts… what a joke… and we order eggplant with garlic sauce and is was way over cooked and they burned it… The white rice even sucked half cooked and half uncooked … and to make matters worst not only was it cash only but they didn’t have any Togo plates so they gave may boyfriend a Togo box and cut it. oh not gave charged him .50 cents for it … I DONOTRECOMMENDTHISPLACETOEATPLEASESAVEYOURMONEYITISNOTWORTHIT… I WILLNEVERGOTHEREEVEREVER … food sucks!

I love this place! Keep in mind, that I am also someone who thoroughly enjoys Panda Express, so I may not be the best judge when it comes to Chinese food. However, the price! How is the food this cheap, generously portioned and delicious?! I heard that the food used to be a lot better, but I was really pleased with the taste of the food that I got! We ordered 5 dishes: Chef Tzou Tofu Shanghai Noodle Shanghai Vegetable fried rice with fatty pork(can’t find it on the menu. but my coworker order this) Mongolian beef Basil Chicken Everything was really yummy~ I love the tofu, though I wished that there was more of the sauce. The basil in the basil chicken was sooo flavorful! It complimented the rice and noodles very well! I still can’t believe that my bill was less than $ 40 for 5 dishes… I will definitely be back~

Fried fish nuggets, bacon clay pot, and beef chow hor fun(flat wide rice stick noodle). It’s a hole in the wall but the food is solid. Its like toughing it out in the wilderness. I give it only a 3 because it’s not exactly a comfortable dining experience being a rough hole in the wall. However, the food is good. Fried fish was fried nicely and not oily. The bacon clay pot has oh so few bacon in it. I would expect a few pieces of real pork. The beef chow hor fun was above average. The hor fun noodles did not stick together while the beef was your typical chinese beef tenderness. If you want a quick no frills meal on the cheap, here you go.

Hometown Favorite is a little hole in the wall restaurant across from Ohlone College in Fremont. The restaurant it’s self is minimalist at best but they are very busy doing a brisk take out business. The menu is large with a lot of Shanghai dishes. I think the owners are Shanghainese. There is and English menu but many items are written in Chinese and are plastered on the wall. Chinese language classes come into good use in this situation. We ordered the following: Sour Cabbage clay pot 4⁄5 stars very traditional good flavor. Braised fish 3⁄5 stars they did give us choice of catfish or carp the catfish was just OK try the Carp Shanghai Fries Rice 4⁄5 stars very good but needed a little more veggies Braised Okra 4⁄5 stars tender and buttery Cumin Lamb 3⁄5 stars very little lamb lots of onions Spicy kidney stir fry 4⁄5 stars very spicy Kau fu 4⁄5 stars Ma Lan Tou 4⁄5 stars Nice Chinese home style food restaurant. Service and décor is minimal.

This is a perfect example of a «hole-in-the-wall» restaurant. I actually had a hard time looking for this place, as its entrance is located on the side of a building. Their prices are definitely one of the cheapest around, but their portions are smaller than other restaurants and I thought the flavor was a little bland. This restaurant is also«cash only», which is typical for the prices of their entrees. I wasn’t disappointed with the quality or portions of their food because their prices were very cheap, but I don’t see myself going out of my way to dine here. If I was a student at Ohlone College, I would be coming here frequently because they are located right across the street. Plus., it’s so expensive to be a college student nowadays, the food prices at Hometown Favorite are very affordable for a starving college student.

How did I not know that this place existed in high school?! Soooo good — 3 entrees for $ 16.50? Can’t be beat. It’s a bit of a hole-in-the-wall but I think it adds to the charm. The owners are super nice, too. The boy&I found out that the teachers from our high school frequently order takeout from here for their meetings… Those tricky teachers were trying to hide this place from their students! There seems to be a lot of call-ins/to-go orders, but I liked eating in too. My favorites here are the salt-pepper spareribs, chow fun, and honey walnut shrimp. Hooray for cheap&yummy Chinese food! Definitely must try if you’re in the MSJ area.
