50 varieties of pies said the highway signs. My man had a mission and must sample every pie he comes across. So we counted down the kilometers looking forward to trying one or two of the 50 varieties. We even wrote a song while driving along playing my uke which made us even more excited when we finally arrived. There were lots of other cars stopping too. A queue. No worries, gave me time to check out the pies and the labels. First pie display cabinet had Chicken & Asparagus, Prawn; Curried Prawn; Satay Chicken; Spinach & Feta, Curried Chicken Mornay., meh! The next cabinet had all the red meat varieties like Lambs Fry and Bacon… Plus all the usual beef types like Plain, Curried Beef, Thai Chilli beef, Beef Stroganoff. My man ordered his usual — Beef and Burgundy, and I ordered the Pepper Steak. I asked the lady serving how many pies they sold each day. «Up to 1,000 on a good day and the kitchen keeps baking all day from 6am she said.» Hmmm must be good pies I thought… hmmm the displays were still full at 5pm when we called in… hmmm must be a long night ahead… all these observations and yet only one big question — what do these pies taste like?! We tucked in to our pies in paper bags. Very hot. Molten gravy. Lots of pastry. Not much flavour — rather bland. My expert pie taster’s rating out of 10? 6. Scored that high mainly because inexpensive $ 4.80 each. My personal pie expert said he won’t be back. I wonder if the 1,000 pies a day sold are to first time and last time customers like us. Freddos Famous pies with 50 varieties will not be in our future stop list.
