wow. this is a really good cuban they have here. we got to visit these guys at the deep ellum truck rally. it was so fantastic i didn’t even slow down long enough to take a full picture! i’m glad these guys made it out to dallas. i really appreciate the small menu they offer. why get overwhelmed with a bunch of mediocre entrees when you can perfect two or three at a time? i’m a fan and i’ll totally seek these guys out again.

We finally made a trip to the new Food Truck park yesterday during the lunch rush. It should have been a hint that this truck was the least favorite of the crowd, because it had no line, whereas the other trucks had enormous lines(which is not a positive in itself, since we had decided not to go to a restaurant since we were short on time, so the thought of waiting in line for street food seemed a little silly). Anyway, the menu was sparse, just Rosemary Fries, a ham and cheese croissant, and crème brûlée. We got the fries and croissant to share for about $ 9. The serving of fries was HUGE. They were good but very salty, and I had to keep getting up for ketchup packets(not sure why they wouldn’t give a handful instead of 2 or 3 at a time). The croissant was flakey and tasty, but the sandwich itself was dry, and the truck did not have any mayo or mustard to go with it. All in all, I found it to be a very salty, dry meal. I have heard they have delicious desserts, so I would go back to try something else, but I would not go out of my way to eat here again.

We wandered out to the Fort Worth Food Truck park a few hours after the rains stopped and the clouds parted on Sunday afternoon. We were getting an early start to celebrating the day before my wife’s birthday, kids in tow. I surveyed the 6 food trucks and settled on Fried Chicken from The Munch Box(my family got nachos, tacos, and stir fry at other trucks). I ponied up $ 5 for a wing and(boneless) breast box with gravy. When it appeared in the window a few minutes later(cooked when I ordered it), I grabbed the box and headed to our picnic table. I pulled off the wing that was perched on top of the breast well above the gravy line. The first bite I took was magnificent. I’ve been thinking about this for about 19 hours and I think it’s probably the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. I peeled a piece off for my 9 year old daughter and as soon as it hit her mouth she asked if she could get another order. She had never tried fried chicken before(thanks a lot, health food culture) but she was immediately hooked. Once I made my way through the wing, I started into the breast. It was cooked perfectly and submerged about knee deep in gravy(if chicken breasts had knees). The gravy/chicken combo was probably 4.5 stars, just short of the 5 star fried wing I had just devoured. The gravy had a familiar flavor in it but I didn’t slow down long enough to try and figure out what it was. By the time I got to it, the underneath side of the breast was a slight bit mushy from the short lived romance between fried crust and gravy. That was my only disappointment, but it was only because I wanted more of the crisp I just enjoyed on the wing. But still, 4.5 stars. C’mon, it was really good. When my daughter went back to get another order, sans gravy, the guy at the window threw in a free crème brûlée. I’m not sure if he thought she was a cutie, if he was trying to cheer her on in her young foodie adventures, or if he just had too many crème brulees in the back. Maybe all of the above, but we didn’t care. It too was outstanding. I loved that the custard was laced with vanilla seeds– it gave it a great flavor. I don’t know what it would have costed, had we bought it, but I feel quite certain it would be worth it.

This place is outrageous, and not the outrageous in a positive way. My friend ordered goat cheese ravioli for $ 9 and only received 3TINY pieces of ravioli. We all thought it was a joke or the chef had forgotten to put the other 6 pieces of ravioli in her order but there was no mistake. No matter how delicious the ravioli… I would never pay $ 9 for 3 pieces of pasta the size of quarters. Save your money and buy something else worthy to eat.

The Munch Box is a great little food truck located in the hip, new Fort Worth Food Park. They emphasize fresh, local ingredients. The only items I have tried are the French toast and a gourmet«moon pie». The French toast was hands-down the best I have ever had. The gentleman serving me said they use fresh bread that’s baked in Dallas, real vanilla beans, and Vermont maple syrup. Oh, and the bananas on top were extraordinary — prepared in a gourmet fashion. I’ve had fancy French toast in San Francisco, but nothing compares with the Munch Box. I just can’t wait to go back and try some of their entrees.
