Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord

Wonderful service, great music, beautiful church. Overall, spectacular way to worship the Lord.

The myriad of confusing arrows pointing in all different directions adorning this parish’s parking lot serve as a metaphor for the modernism that afflicts the Church today, very much including Church of the Resurrection in Fort Myers, Florida. Where should you go? Where will you end up? How do you know you are going in the right direction?
From a spiritual perspective, walking into Resurrection can be as confusing as its parking lot. The Tabernacle is hidden in the corner of the back chapel, so that an unsuspecting visitor could reasonably assume he is in an Episcopal church. The centers of focus are (a) the priest (who sits in a Peter’s chair), and (b) the congregation, many of whom can be seen through the opening separating the main church from the back chapel. Especially given Resurrection’s architectural design, why shouldn’t the Tabernacle be in the middle, within view of congregants in the main and back chapels? It strikes me that the current arrangement pleases the pastor (and not necessarily his associates), and by extension the bishop, who bears ultimate responsibility of this and many other modernist arrangements he tolerates in the Diocese of Venice.
The musicians are talented, but one often wonders whether they ever studied Catholic music. Regardless, the clapping suggests flip-​flop-​clad parishioners are there more for the performance than for the liturgical prayer. Mass is so much fun! The performance includes female acolytes and the occasional prayer of the faithful that sounds like it was written by Fox News.
The pastor allows the Latin Mass. Deo gratias. Yet even this is affected by the missing Tabernacle, so that the vertical nature of worship in the Extraordinary Form is contradicted by its physical direction toward … nothing? There are many groups and activities within this parish, sort of like a Rotary Club, and probably, many people are attracted to the parish for this reason alone. More thoughtful Catholics attend Resurrection for the sacraments, and to their credit, its priests hear confessions for a 30-​minute period before each Mass as well as during a regularly scheduled time. This is sadly not the norm in Florida parishes.
Resurrection would serve more by doing less. It should set a standard for Christ-​centered holiness, beauty, and truth and then invite everyone to reach for it. By trying instead to provide everything for everyone, it creates a contradicting array of spiritual arrows not unlike the ones in its parking lot. No wonder a previous reviewer «was actually surprised that it is R.C.» While some people find such surprises pleasant, others find them troubling. Scandalizing too.

One of the nicest Roman Catholic churches I’ve ever visited (I was actually surprised that it is R.C. due to its name, which isn’t a very common name for an R.C. church). I don’t know how long ago it was built, but it appears to be brand new, and it was obviously designed by an architect. Huge interior and very well constructed.
This church has 5:00 PM Saturday and 12:00 AM Sunday masses, as well as Latin masses which is something that is very rare to find. They have elaborate masses for special days like Easter. There are even violinists playing at all masses.
