They’re your stereotypical Buffy-esque voodoo shop, so I can’t knock them for the strange smells and palm readings. That’s just them catering them to their target demographic. What I can knock them for is the awful selection of books. They had several different translations of the Tao Te Ching, as well as various Western commentaries applying some interpretation of the book to any topic an aging yoga enthusiast might be interested in. Unfortunately, there was not a single copy of Zhuangzi, and you can’t really have Daoism without both — its like if you had a Bible without the Old Testament. There was one singular copy of the Ramayana, and there were no copies of the Mahabharata. Looking at other Indo-European mythologies, there were no Eddas, no Ovid, no Virgil. The last three I can understand — the Greeks, Romans, and Norse are the primary headwaters of the West, and shops such as these are care much more about the East. Unfortunately for that argument, they did carry a couple of on Qabalah, a sort of synthesis between hermeticism and Jewish Kabballah, made most famous by Madonna. Christian/Hermetic Qabalah is the most common form of it around today, and is profoundly Western. There were a few books advertising themselves as Wiccan(not to mention many, many books about the Earth Goddess), and some pentacle themed merchandise, but there wasn’t any Crowley, or LaVey, or going back further, Agrippa or Dee. While the latter two are fairly obscure, and I sincerely doubt any store in this area would be caught dead carrying either of LaVey’s famous works, I was very much surprised by the fact that there were no copies of The Book of The Law in stock. Surprisingly, there were a couple of Bibles in stock, though I didn’t check to see which translation, as well as many books on Christian spiritualism. The selection in this regard was adequate, but I’d encourage someone more interested in the subject to go to a specialized Christian bookstore. The yoga selection was impeccable, comprising 2⁄3 of the selection, to exclusion of other works. Overall, this store caters to someone superficially interested in burning incense, practicing yoga, buying geodes, or having there palm read. If that is you, Northern Lights is highly recommended. If you are more interested in literally anything else you might expect a «metaphysical» shop would have then I recommend finding anywhere else. I’ve mentioned Christian bookstores, but for Western Esotericism I recommend trawling through used bookstores(or checking the Barnes and Noble across the street, which may not stock Crowley, LaVey, Agrippa, of Dee but has a significantly better religion, mythology, Eastern philosophy, and esoteric selections), and failing that looking online. If you don’t want to bother reading the last eight paragraphs, here’s the part that matters: the selection isn’t what you’d expect, and extremely limited to whatever’s been featured on Oprah in the last ten years. You should go somewhere else.

Northern Lights is the absolute greatest store! I’ve shopped there since they opened in 1992 and have bought so many wonderful treasures over the years. The owners Sebastien and Susan are awesome and so friendly. I love the atmosphere and feel blessed the minute I walk in. They’re always playing peaceful, healing music and it smells so good in there! Whenever I want to buy a special gift for someone, that’s the place I go.
