My favorite Japanese restaurant in New York City, better than most I’ve been to in Manhattan. Service is excellent, a little more than a mediocre Japanese restaurant, but well worth the extra price. Everything is done to perfection, and the Sushi is all amazing! You can’t go wrong here!

It’s rare when a local restaurant is exceptional but Katsuno in Forest Hills has some of the best authentic Japanese food I’ve ever had. The Spanish Mackerel Tataki in Scallion red onion myoga sauce was excellent. The Chilled braised Magritte Duck yuzu kosyo was superb. The Sashimi Dinner was outstanding. The steamed black cod was better than a renowned restaurant in Manhattan. Service was attentive for the most part. The décor is pretty basic. However, given the chef’s abilities I defintely would return.

This is serious, authentic Japanese food in a cozy, non-pretentious, intimate setting. I’m not sure whether it was featured on Time Out NY but it should. It is one of those places which one would travel to from any other part of the city just for the food. Excellent

Food is authentic Japanese, he even makes the wasabi from actual horseradish. Sashimi is always fresh. Only downside is it’s pricey but it’s worth it.

Food doesn’t taste good, too salty, and the restaurant looks so cheap, but it’s too expensive. Worst Japanese restaurant ever, will never come back!!!

Amazing. I truly enjoyed this restaurant. It was a spur of the moment walk-in right as they opened for dinner last Saturday. The venue is small and intimate(in such a good way). It’s dimly lite and the sophisticated music in the background really sets the tranquil Japanese scene. The art on the walls are each beautifully chosen and add to the restaurant quite well. One item(which still didn’t defer me from giving them 5 stars) was the strong smell of gas. It was pretty powerful but since we did come in just as the restaurant literally opened I figured it was just the place warming up. We started with two appetizers, the chilled octopus and the asparagus and tomato salad. Sooo good and FRESH. The waitress was beyond accommodating and patient with our decisions. We also had the apple green tea– great choice. This was a little different from the norm and gave the tea a sweet taste. We shared three rolls: salmon, crab California roll and the eel roll. All were made in front with the sushi chef and wonderful. I honestly think that any item on their menu would be very good– we couldn’t have gone wrong. Would come back and recommend this place to others.

We came here for dinner on a Friday night with reservations. We were running late and called to let them know but they said it wasn’t a problem, they had tables. When we got there the restaurant wasnt completely full so it’s a pretty relaxing time. In terms of food I thought everything was just ok. Nothing really stood out. Nothing was bad, but nothing was amazing either. One day I’ll look back and not really remember much about the meal. We got the chicken tatsuaage which was a bit lacking in flavor and crispiness but was juicy. Also ordered the tofu & uni, salmon & uni salad, the green tea tiramisu with black sesame ice cream(had an icy texture). I don’t even remember what else we got to list it out anymore LOL! In summary, average, decent, forgettable.

My daughter loved the Miso Soup so much that she took her dinner home and had 3 more bowls of soup. The atmosphere is lovely and the food is excellent! We will be coming back.

Came here on a dinner date with my boyfriend. The food is good, dishes are on the small side. But that is usually the case for Japanese food. I enjoyed this place because there is a good variety of cooked food and sushi. The sushi is very fresh and the rice was cooked perfectly. Service was on the slow side. The prices are expensive for a restaurant in Queens. The waitress spilled a whole plate of soy sauce on me and it got all over my hair and clothes, she was very apologetic and kind about it though. The restaurant gave us the dessert for free. Although, I did feel like we should have had 10% off or an extra dessert for free. Since my shirt got ruined. But they did there best to accommodate. We probably won’t be returning, the food was good but nothing exceptional that we will be returning for seconds.

People use the word authentic alot so it has kinda lost the impact it normally would generate. This place is «the real deal» boom… Ive been here a couple of times and it has always been very consistent with the quality of the dishes. They waitress has always been helpful. The poached egg is delicious but it is a little runny so be warned if you dont like your eggs a little raw it might be better to move on. The uni is clean and fresh. Besides those two i normally try different dishes every time.

Cute little hidden restaurant. Loved the sea urchin egg tofu and the Magritte duck very much. The sashimi and sea urchin were very fresh here.

A good Japanese place in forest hills. The décor is simple, nothing special but the food is well done and there is a good sake selection.

Came here for dinner on a Thursday evening. There was only one other couple who was seated. Shortly after we were seated business picked up. We were served water and we placed our appetizers: fried chicken and salmon sushi sashimi. I wish the chicken came with a sauce. The chicken had a light batter. A little dry but delicious. The sashimi was light, fresh and delicious. Entrees: regular udon and black miso cod. The udon noodles were nice and chewy. The broth was a little salty. The dish was topped with shredded scallion and some spinach. Kinda light on the veggies, wish there was more. The cod had a light crispy skin and the fish was flaky and perfect. Be careful for bones. Ordered black sesame ice cream to end a perfect meal.

Although uncomfortably pricey, Katsuno is probably the best restaurant in Queens. This was my second visit in three years. I went here by myself, but will definitely ask my family to join me next time. I had: 1. Ohitashi — nice, but forgettable 2. 3 pieces of sashimi; a) yellowtail — out of this world, b) uni — average, c) ikura — heavenly 3. Beef Tataki — incredible appetizer 4. Berkshire pork belly — fantastic(and an unexpectedly large portion, given the price)

I love good sushi but getting it in FH is not easy. Picked this place on Unilocal, and decided to test drive it. On Friday night it was fairly empty but then again its summer so many places are not that crowded. We were met with smiles from the staff and quickly offered drinks. Ordered Chirashi and two rolls, both items were great and the plum wine that I was served was the wine that I have not had in years at other places. I bet other places buy cheap knock off wines because I been looking for this taste forever. They also offered a specialty beer which was bit pricey for beer but never the less really enjoyed the flavor. Great find in my area

My husband and I came here this past weekend and loved it! We love making reservations on Opentable, so that’s what lead us here after also checking the Unilocal reviews. It seemed very authentic to me, and the sushi was honestly best tasting I’ve had since I was in Japan. The service was nice, and we loved the sake too!

This invisible little Japanese restaurant is a bit pricy. The place is dinner only place, no lunch. My husband came here with his daughter many years ago so he decided to take me, his mom and his daughter to have dinner there. The four of us went into this little place and had a great dinner. The waitress was very friendly especially when my husband started speaking in Japanese. She was impressed with his speech and started chatting more with him and wasn’t sure whether hubby understood it all, he said he did hehe *:) Our food presentation came out unexpectedly perfect in style. A picture tells a thousand words. So my pictures are the evident that they tell you to eat and enjoy! The appetizers that we ordered were truly nice-looking ones: asparagus tomato salad, tamagoyaki, tofu(ice-cream look-alike). Then followed by entrée: zaru soba, tempura, grilled cod fish and grilled mackerel. One thing about this place, they turn down people who don’t make reservations. So sad because until we leave, no one came in to sit at those reserved tables yet and we were there almost 2 hours. I guess the place is not desperate for business. The appetizers were very appetizing! My mackerel came out better than some places. I liked the place but I thought it’s a bit pricy. The restaurant doesn’t show much happening from the outside, it’s like being in Japan except I’ve never been to Japan(but hubby did, many times). Will try sashimi here one day.

I love Japanese food. I adore sushi and sashimi. I had given up on eating Japanese food in Queens, sticking to Hatsuhana and Sushi Yasuda, both in Manhattan. Now, I go to Katsuno, where Chef Seo and lovely Yuka are a gift to what’s really an otherwise mediocre food neighborhood! I don’t remember how I was clued-in to Katsuno, but I’ve had about a dozen outstanding meals there over the past few years. It can only be laziness and/or selfishness that prevented me from reviewing this restaurant earlier, because they deserve some real recognition. Their ingredients are impeccable. And, the chef knows the rules well enough to break them with utter poise. So, you can decide on the most traditional japanese fare: the best chawanmushi ever, beautiful sashimi to pine for, simply perfect ohitashi(get the watercress if they have it)…or, you can explore the chefs ‘riffs’ and try a stellar salmon and sea urchin salad that incorporates olive oil and red onion, or a panko crusted filet mignon with an opulent demiglace. Explore the menu. It’s a delight. The sake list is pretty good too; I’m a Wakatake girl myself, but Yuka can guide you ably. 5 stars? Yes… for food and cleanliness and service. It’s not fancy; it doesn’t need to be. Expect a comfortable local vibe with stellar food and kind & generous service. Call for reservations or to check short-notice availability.

I am so glad that Katsuno exists! It is probably one of the only truly authentic Japanese restaurants in Queens, and it just so happens that their food is AMAZING. Looking at the other reviews for this restaurant, it seems that many come here with the wrong expectations. This is NOT a sushi restaurant, if that is what you are expecting. They do serve rolls, nigiri and sashimi but it is not the focal point of this establishment. Also, the prices here are higher than what you would find at any other Asian eatery in queens. However, this is due to the fact that they serve high quality, fresh food and put a great deal of attention and care into what they serve. On several visits, I have gotten the appetizer omakase, which came with an egg custard, pumpkin, and seaweed. All of these are excellent, and I especially love the custard which is really smooth, dense and flavorful. I normally do not like kara-age chicken because I find it to be bland and dry. I ordered it here, and am so happy that I did! It was crispy, extremely juice meat and my friends and I ended up ordering another. I also love the fluke yuzu carpaccio and the salmon carpaccio — these are my favorites here. I love raw fish, and the presentation and taste of these dishes are on another level! The restaurant also serves a variety of grilled fish, udon and soba and I have found all of them to be really good! If it’s on the menu, please order the sōmen with ume! I could eat this stuff everyday for the rest of my life! I have already dined at Katsuno several times and definitely plan on visiting again and again. The service here is really friendly and polite. Also, the restaurant is small but has a very homey, comfortable atmosphere — great place to catch up with friends over an excellent meal!

Katsuno is a hidden gem in a quiet part of forest hills away from the busy austin street section. It is so understated outside that if you are not purposely looking for it, you could walk right past it and not notice. The restaurant is small, quiet and clean. They serve very very authentic japanese style tapas, noodles and sushi(no crazy american style rolls here). We ordered the uni with silken tofu and I highly recommend it. While I have had better uni elsewhere, theirs very sweet and creamy and pairs so well with the tofu(unlike the extremely bitter uni at other sushi joints in queens). The octopus and cucumber vinegratte is very light and refreshing with the right amount of acidity. Their sushi is pretty fresh also and priced fairly. They have been around for a long time but I feel their business has gone down a bit, i came at 7 on friday night and the place was not crowded at all. While i enjoy it being so quiet and calm i do wish they have more business so they can survive. Katsuno is one of the best japanese restaurant in queens and very comparable to places in the city, I highly recommend you try this place out!
