When looking for a wedding cake baker, price wasn’t my main concern, taste was. Everyone knows that wedding cake has a bad reputation for being dry /tasteless and that was my biggest fear — having bad cake. I was adamant that I didn’t want to spend $ 500+ on a cake that would end up in the garbage — I want people to like it! Due to the fantastic reviews on Wedding Wire, I booked a tasting for May 2016 — which is $ 15. If you end up booking a cake here, that $ 15 is credited toward your order. I was very pleased with the responsiveness and general politeness of the staff in the emails about booking a tasting and various cake ideas. I also spent quite a bit of time browsing through their portfolio on social media prior to my visit — their cakes are gorgeous. Unfortunately, this place is really difficult to find via GPS as the shopping center is a bit of a maze. I wanted to try them before the tasting due to people on other sites saying in general, sometimes wedding bakers sample cake that tastes better than what they deliver on the actual day of. Once inside I noticed that this place really is geared more toward custom cake orders than it is for buying desserts while you’re out and about. There were only a few items for purchase, one being a strawberry cupcake with vanilla icing. I asked the cashier what her favorite item was. She was totally polite and gushed about how great the chocolate chip cookies were, which I also bought. The total came out to about $ 4 for the cupcake and a cookie. As some background, I’ve worked in bakeries and I’ve made wedding cake. I also loathe canned white frosting. Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines — I know what it tastes like and I’ve hated it since I was a child. Every year, my dad wants brownies with canned white frosting on it for his birthday, so I’m very aware of what this stuff smells and tastes like. I was excited about this strawberry cupcake — it looked great. I opened the container to smell it. I knew that smell. That was canned icing. AGHHHHHHHH! I don’t care if someone swears on their life and bets the farm that this is homemade buttercream, it isn’t, it’s canned, I know my frosting. I tasted it. I was correct. What made me upset was that not only was the frosting canned, the cake was for sure the same as the boxed strawberry cake mix you can get on any grocery store shelf. I had Brian try it, and while he doesn’t have the same palate that I do, he said it tasted like nothing. I was so disappointed. Now onto the cookie, it didn’t look right. It was thick, very crumbly and had no buttery taste. I’m going to deduce that this is from too much flour, using shortening instead of butter and possibly too much baking soda. Within one bite, I knew that this wasn’t the bakery that I would go with for our wedding. We cancelled our tasting appointment and ended up booking with Frosted Art. I had high hopes, and the staff was so gracious and polite which made me all the more disappointed that I had to cancel. In the end, taste is imperative and boxed mixes don’t cut it.

I haven’t actually ordered anything from Jenny Layne but I wanted to post on the character of some of their employees. I’ve been fortunate to meet Kinsey and Antonio, some regulars at my place of work and they and the rest of their group are all very cheerful, kind and generous people. We have been blessed to receive some treat packs on holidays including cookies, cupcakes, and some misc. treats, and everything is always very well prepared and delicious. Everyone loves them and it brightens their day to know someone has gone out of their way to treat them. If I ever need any cookies or cupcakes I’m sure to have them at the top of my list and from the personalities of their employees, I’m sure if you were their customer they would treat with just as much respect and jolly service.

First of all, the cupcakes LOOK great. I wish I could say the same for how they taste. However, they unfortunately taste similar to something out of a box. The cake and icing remind me of Duncan Hines and/or Betty Crocker. I’m admittedly a cupcake snob. If I’m going to indulge in a cupcake, it should be worth the calories. If you’re looking for a cupcake made completely from scratch and worth every penny and calorie, I would recommend The Flour Shop in Highland Village. If you’re primarily interested in how«pretty» a cupcake/cake is, this is the place for you. They do not disappoint when it comes to presentation. Unfortunately, they don’t taste as good as they look.

Jenny Layne is the best in the Dallas area. She was SO much fun to work with and she was excited to try anything new! She was the only place I could find that would make a pumpkin and cream cheese wedding cake for us! She even had a special sample made for us to try when we came to the tasting. The cake was super moist even over a week after the wedding!(We went on our honeymoon for a week and my mom saved a piece for us when we got back!)She also went out of her way to go and get donuts in lieu of a grooms cake and arranged them beautifully on cupcake stands that she provided. I LOVETHISBAKERY!

I went in two days prior to needing my cake. They said it would be no problem getting the cake when I needed it. When I arrived at the time we had agreed upon the cake was not ready. They ask if I could return later. I got there at 4:30 and they closed at 6. When they brought the cake out the decorations that I requested were nothing like we had agreed upon. Even had left an example of exactly what I wanted and they said no problem. When I complained they went back and did correct it. I had purchased the cake for a baby shower and requested a red velvet because it was the mom’s favorite. Was really excited to taste it since I had heard so many good things about this bakery but to my disappointment the cake was EXTREMELYDRY!!! Not a good flavor at all. I have had a much better tasting red velvet from some other of super markets. Completely DISAPPOINTED. The cake ended being adorable to look at but the taste is what is really important and it failed miserably! When sharing my experience with a friend he found the same thing to be true. He stated his business partner had spent a fortune on a cake for a birthday party but the cake was really really dry! Not sure if they bake ahead of freeze but there is no moisture in their cakes at all. Not worth the $ 55 for an 8 inch square cake.

Have done many weddings with Jenny and must say she nails the cakes evreytime and even the desert bars too!!! All items I have ever seen her with have been rich in flavor, moist to touch, and eaten all up. I have heard nothing but great things about her cakes and can even tell you I have eaten ALOT from the weddings I have been to and had her cakes.

I wish I had pic of the awesome Minion Cake Jenny Layne made for my son’s birthday party. Not only did it look good, but it tasted even better. Soft, not stale at all. All the parents at the party asked where I got it from. And I think she only needs a week’s notice. You won’t be disappointed!”

We ordered a couple of «test» cupcakes well before my son’s birthday(movie themed) to see if they could pull this off. They failed miserably. We had ordered two cupcakes made to look like popcorn or a bucket full of popcorn to fit in with the movie theme. Look on Pinterest and you’ll find 100s of examples. While not an easy request for sure, something that the person taking the order said would be no problem. Now look at the picture… Clearly, the cupcake does not look like popcorn. It looks like a bunch of marshmallows randomly painted with yellow airbrushing. Notice the front, our order asked for his name to be on the front. My son loves movies, but we in fact did not name him POPCORN! Unfortunately, we had prepaid for these, so my wife wanted some sort of compensation, since they clearly weren’t up to the task, plus, the can’t even follow their own instructions. The guy at the counter said there wasn’t anything that they could do. Really? You can’t give some of my money back and have an ounce of decent customer service? Who do they think they are? They pretend to be a high end custom bakery, but in the end, the are just over priced, snobby, wanna-bes. They also wanted us to prepay again for them to try again. Are you kidding? We pay you to mess up the first time, so let’s give you more money to mess up again.

I picked up a one tier cake for a gender reveal last weekend. Design: I requested it to be one half blue and one half purple with a white question mark on top. I wouldn’t have had an issue, unless the blue icing was actually mixed well without marbling throughout. The purple side was vivid but the blue looked as if it wasn’t mixed well and appeared rushed. Thankfully, this was not the centerpiece of the reveal… had it would have been, I would have been mortified. Taste: For a basic vanilla cake, I was disappointed in the dryness and after slicing a few pieces, it completely fell apart. Price: Overall, I feel it was too pricey for such a basic elementary designed cake. I was sold by looking at previous designs on their Facebook page, but it looks as if they gave this simple design to an apprentice to practice their cake skills. All cakes should be treated as if they are for a special occasion… and I will not be using Jenny Layne Bakery again.

I wouldn’t let the negative reviews steer you away. It seems like Jenny always try to make a right when something is an issue. I also know that there was some staff issues and that has been taken care of so hopefully all is good. Anyway, I’ve never had a bad piece of her cake. And she can make any custom design you want. Her cakes look and taste great. They are reasonably priced. Her chocolate chip cookies are amazing. Just try her out. You won’t be disappointed.

$ 40(plus tax) for a 6“whip cream cake, no decorating or anything. Totally unacceptable to charge that much, its crazy. If you want to throw away large amounts of money for a(simple) cake, this is the place… for you!!!

Went to Jenny Layne to get a drum cake for my son because they had beautiful pictures of unique cakes. When I ordered I was told the smallest cake I could order would be $ 130 because it would be «so elaborately decorated» and serve a minimum of 30 people. Decided to splurge and expected something amazing and what I got was 3 round cakes decorated to look like drums. Seriously $ 130 for 3 round cakes? My nephew brought a simple cake from market street which was ten times moister and tastier than this. Lesson learned –stick with the basics and save a lot of money!

I had The Jenny Layne Bakery make my daughter’s 1st birthday cake, and they amazed me! The cake was perfection. If you’re looking for a beautiful cake that also tastes extremely delicious and is moist, I highly recommend this bakery.

Ordered my son’s first birthday cake from Jenny Layne Bakery. Very disappointing experience! Even though I brought a party invitation with me for color matching when I placed my order, they completely missed the mark on the cake colors. The double tier cake was to be light blue in base icing color with navy blue, lime green and white fondant accents. Their navy blue fondant ended up turning out a bright royal blue color. The fondant accents that were supposed to be lime green ended up yellow. A true eye sore next to the lime green bead of icing around the base of the cake. A complete fail if they were actually trying to match the lime green fondant to the lime green icing. I pointed out the color issues to the gentleman that helped me at pick up and he apologized and said he’d pass the word along. That’s it? I spend $ 100 on a cake for my son’s first birthday, there’s still 3 hours before the party begins, and you won’t even try to fix it? He also said that they can’t get their blue any darker than the bright royal blue that I ended up with. Just know that if you order navy blue here you are going to end up with a much brighter royal blue color. I understand there may be color limitations when working with icing and fondant, but I wish Jenny had told me that when I ordered the cake from her. She acted like the colors I was asking for were no problem. Already very disappointed that the cake was far from what I hoped it would be, you can really imagine my disgust when we cut into the top tier to discover they also messed up on the flavor of the filling between layers. The top tier was supposed to be chocolate cake with chocolate hazelnut frosting. We ended up with chocolate cake and vanilla frosting. As for the flavor, the cake was just ok. It definitely didn’t knock our socks off. I went in to Jenny Layne today to discuss the mishaps. I did get an apology but mostly got excuses. Don’t waste your time. Not what I’d expect from a bakery that has won awards for best in the county.

Great little bakery if you are looking for something«pretty» as opposed to taste. The red velvet and brown chocolate cupcakes I got were good but not great. They looked absolutely beautiful though! I noticed one thing this bakery does not skimp on is presentation! Although the cupcakes were sort of a miss I would highly recommend trying one of their chocolate chip cookies. They are perfectly gooey with just the right amount of chocolate chips.

Cake was beautiful and delicious. Jenny worked with us personally to design exactly what we wanted in the wedding and groom’s cakes. The groom’s cake — an Auburn University tie in — was fabulous; Jenny did an amazing job on the design. Wedding cake incorporated multiple cake flavors, fillings and frosting — it was fabulous. Best of all, Jenny was super easy to work with, highly responsive, competitively priced, and zero hassle. Couldn’t be happier, highly recommended.

My daughter and I stopped here on a Saturday afternoon. We saw on the door that it said it had closed about 10 minutes earlier. However, the OPEN sign was still on, and there were people inside, and the door was unlocked. We thought maybe this was part of some«grand opening» thing. We walked in and the gal at the counter was discussing possible cake designs with a customer. There were other adult women in the back of the business. All of them saw us. Not a single one of them acknowledged us. All we wanted to do was buy a few cupcakes… which were sitting right there on the counter… at the end of the day… but no one came from the back to ask how they could help us. The gal at the counter never paused her design discussion to see if she could help us. And none of them bothered to tell us they were closed — if that was the case. We stood there and waited a bit(feeling that it wasn’t our place to ask them to notice us). Another lady walked in and waited behind us. Finally, the 3 of us gave us and walked out, and 3 sales were lost.

I absolutely LOVE cupcakes and whenever I travel I make sure and visit the local bakery to see what goodies they have. Jenny’s bakery is amazing and everything she makes is delicious, not to mention she is so sweet! From the sugar cookies to the chocolate, vanilla, strawberry andddd yellow cupcakes… They’re all amazing.
