Delicious – ackee and saltfish are my staple. A little greasy but delicious nonetheless!

I was looking for something different while visiting Homestead. This place is really good. I had not had Jamaican food before. It’s a little hard to find and the place is in an industrial complex. It’s worth a stop though. I had the jerk chicken and jerk pork with oxtail gravy with a cold ginger beer. It was so tasty. I also finished it off with a piece of nutmeg cake. I’ll be going back.

I moved to Homestead nearly 7 years ago after living in Fort Lauderdale for 5 years, while might I add, married to a Jamaican. I’m fortunate enough to know good, authentic Jamaican food when it touches my palate. Top Taste is not it. Let me first say, the owner and employees are very pleasant but that’s where it ends. On Monday, 2÷29÷2016, I had a craving for my favorite, Jamaica’s national breakfast dish, ackee and saltfish. I’ve had it from here quite a few times to fill my longing for it. I’ve tried their dinner but didn’t like it so much for reasons stated above(doesn’t taste authentic), so I stick to the breakfast. I ordered the ackee and saltfish with food(dumpling, banana, and sweet potato) with a side of plantain(which was dry). There were no ‘pieces’ of ackee only mush combined with the saltfish, I dealt with it because I craved the combination, the textures however weren’t inviting. I figure they use the canned ackee since they also sell it here. Fresh ackee is so much better. My mother-in-law would sit with a half of a grocery bag full and pick the ripe ackee to prepare the next morning. I’m not sure if it’s in season but I’ve never had fresh ackee served to me at Top Taste at any time of the year. Black pepper– there was too much. This was not scotch bonnet heat or even habanero, but black pepper. The heartburn that I received afterwards for hours on end, made me decide I will not return. It’s unfortunate. It’s also unfortunate that this is the only Jamaican restaurant in Homestead/Florida City. I’ve talked to a few locals and they say the restaurant use to be a lot better. I don’t know. I’m thinking, coming from Fort Lauderdale, home of Lauderhill, a heavily dominant Jamaican community, no one here knows good, authentic Jamaican food when they taste it. Hopefully, Top Taste can get it together so that they continue to stay in business. I give 2 stars because they really are nice but the food isn’t.

Fast service, I called on my way there and when I got there it was ready. Had the jerk chicken and it was quite the lunch. Decent portion and some nice plantains after we’re the Icing to the cake. Good spot. Locations kinda tricky

If you are looking for some excellent home-cooked(understand slowly simmered) style dishes… look no further! I have been working in this area for the past couple of weeks and I have come to this place at least a half dozen times already. I’ve had most everything on the menu: curry goat, curry chicken, jerk chicken and soup specials… all excellent but the akee & saltfish(salt cod), Jamaica’s national dish, and their signature oxtail stew knock it out of the ballpark! I didn’t think that I cared about oxtail that much until I had it here. The brown gravy that it is slow-cooked in is amazingly rich in flavor. Get it over rice and peas(rice and kidney beans) and thank me later! Don’t let this place’s out-of-the-way location stop you from getting the best food in the area. Even though I used my GPS, I drove right by it the first time. Oh, and if you want some beef patties, you better get there early(preferably before noon)… they go quickly. Big portions and friendly service. This place is a gem!

Food was very good! We ordered Ox tails, curry chicken and curry goat. They came with dumpling, super yummy fried plantain and cabbage salad. Huge portions and the price was right. Really satisfied with the meals.

I personally like this place, but my Friends were not crazy about it. I ordered curry shrimp and it was oily, but tasty. I also had like this ginger candy and that was delicious. I appreciate that someone Jamaican was making Jamaican food.

Usually I love love love West Indian dishes, but I had I went to this place 3 times. First time was OK, second time(my birthday) Food was fresh and good… Now I know for a fact I won’t be going back. If you order after 4 pm you get the bottom of the pot. Rice was dry and had a «rice burn» so u actually felt it scrape going down, the plate was SLOPPY, everything was soaked with the gravy/juices. Plate full of bones. There was No meat, only bone and slimy fatty part of the meat hanging. I was SO disgusted when I opened my plate. I’m used to eating that bomb ass Guyanese/Trini dishes in Brooklyn, NYC, but down here, especially a place called top taste? Lawd have mercy, what u tink u feeding a dog? All this big set of money people paying $ 10 a plate of bones n dry rice and dry cole slaw with ranch dressing? C’mon people get it together, if don’t have fresh food, just close your doors, rather than give a box of bones and dry burn rice to get a review like this. I don’t play about my money or my food and tonight I got jipped on both. Damn shame. Won’t be back — Will NOT recommend, Will spread the word and in search of a Real West Indian restaurant that knows that Presentation, Freshness and Flavor is what makes Caribbean cuisine SO great! And let me finish with this. I know when places first open things are great and presentation and everything is important to get a stream of customers, but when people get that popularity, it’s a damn shame that the pride they put in to get the business dwindles, to where a review like this has to be put up. I’m always down to support my people but damn, when u hand me a box of bones n burn rice, I felt like u think us customers are shit, The food I got I would have given my dog minus the burn rice, he could have them bones with the slimy fat. DON’T WAVETHEFLAG, WHENYOUNOTSHOWINGJAMAICANPRIDE! I would have felt shit faced if I brought a friend or colleague there. Rather find out by myself then be embarrassed to serve colleagues a box of bones. Oh lord. I am so ashamed of this place.

The serving size of the jerk chicken platter is enormous! I couldn’t even finish my meal. If you want a home cooked meal this is the place to go. Just make sure you ask for very light on the dressing on the salad.

LOL This place was sooo interesting. First of all we got lost trying to look for this place, since the map is wrong. Then we were all like oh my gosh this place looks so sketchy with some loud Jamaican music pumping through the speakers. I was like okay, I’m just going to stay with my group and be aware of my surroundings b/c I don’t want to be killed and have my organs harvested. I did love the atmosphere and the ghetto fabulous lounge chairs without the bottom. They also sold a lot of the spices they used on the side– along with some soda drinks. The food was cooked really hot. I don’t condone them to use those white Styrofoam boxes because I think I was literally eating plastic at some point. I got the jerk pork, which was really tasty yum yum. The RICE and beans were even more tasty being soft and not crunchy yum. Good place for food. Atmosphere was interesting, but I think it would only be fun the first few times lol.

Friend of mine brought over dinner last night and I have to tell I looooove Jamaican food… I did not like this at all! I had the jerk chicken with rice and peas… there was no jerk to the chicken… nothing…nada…mostly bones, very little meat, no spice… no heat. The rice and peas did not have much flavor to it. I was really looking forward to this meal and it was a huge disapointment.
