I popped into Twist at the recommendation of the fabulous Melanie at Repo Records. I feel the way a lot of people seem to feel in their reviews. Amy was fun, but she didn’t seem to be super interested in hearing what I actually wanted and did her own thing. Ultimately the chin strip beard I wanted came out a little uneven(fortunately, unlike the hack job that was done on me at The Chop Shop, this is minor and fixable.) What surprised me was when she dipped down with her buzzer and did my eyebrows, even going so far as to wax them at the end of my cut because she said there were stray hairs. I mean. I dunno. I don’t actually care, but it was so random and unexpected. I felt like I was clay being moulded. The total came to $ 25 which I thought was fair, and I tipped $ 10 because I came out looking better than I went in, but the truth is I won’t go back.

Oh, Amy. What are we to do with you? I really don’t want to get into specifics, but suffice it to say that after both I and my teenage son had established Amy as our regular stylist, and had chosen to overlook several minor«incidents» with her(forgotten appointments, inconsistent pricing, strange and moderately offensive comments, etc.) we finally had a major incident with her and that was that. She treated us in a way one NEVER should treat a customer in any business, and she did it over a complete non-issue. We have not gone back. It is a shame: Amy is a talented stylist with a cool aesthetic and is in a prime location… the only way her business could fail is if she botches it, and based on my personal experience and similar ones incurred by other people I know(not to mention several other Unilocalers), «botching it» is exactly what she is doing, and with some apparent fervor. She simply does not know how to run a business, and I am being charitable by letting my criticism/assessment of her stop there. I walk past Twist all of the time and am frankly surprised every time I see that it is still a «going concern». At this pricepoint and in this neighborhood I recommend Salon On 4th or Juju instead. Same prices, more consistency, no insanity.

Amy cuts my bangs perfectly every time and is always up for having a little fun with my hair. I trust her completely– I’ll bring in a picture of something I sorta, kinda, maybe want and after talking with her about it, she totally understands what I’m going for– and gives it to me! Sure, the appointment may take a little longer and be a little less focused than some other salons, but I’ll take that artsy vibe(and GREAT haircuts) over a more snooty salon any day. Amy rocks and GoGo is the cutest salon pup ever!

I think it’s actually pretty funny that someone down there mentioned a chelsea cut, as I’ve been threatening to get one of them forever, and I feel like Amy gave me a modified chelsea. And I also don’t know what you guys are talking about, saying that Amy doesn’t listen to her clients. She wanted nothing more than tons of input from me, which actually I don’t dig that much and had to keep telling her, «just do your thing». Which is why I ended up with half of my head shaved at the last minute. My new look is JUST what I needed, I love it, and I think I’m going to become one of those people who is obsessed with shaving their head. Plus, how has nobody else mentioned Gogo, the world’s most adoring chihuahua?

I too was drawn in like a moth to the flame with the spangled, silver interior, the music nearly blaring from this otherwise quiet street and the goodhearted soul of it all. It looks like a teenager(who had some talent in the haircutting field) ran away from her boring home in Idaho and decided to open a DIY hair salon in the big city. Unfortunately, it isn’t really all that jazz. I absolutely hated the haircut I got there a few years ago. I don’t know how much of it was my hair and how much was how bad it was for my face(straight across bangs – mistake) but I do know that at least part of it(the non bangs, poorly layered, puffy part) was her fault, and that she probably should have talked me out of the bangs. That causes it to lose one star, since I really don’t know how much was the style and how much was her. The next star lost is due to price. My haircut cost almost 70 bucks without a blowout or anything. That’s not what she said originally, and it’s not what it should cost. The prices aren’t listed and it’s really stressful. If it could lose half a star for inconvenience, it would, but I don’t want to make it only two stars, so I’ll just mention it: SHE’S NEVEROPEN! Office hours are so sporadic it took me two weeks to even reach her. Jesus!

I really wanted to love this place, as i find Amy extremely amusing, and the atmosphere is so fun, but man, my last haircut there was bad. It’s still growing out two years later. I have really thin, straight, flat hair, but she shaped it, the way you have to do with thick hair, so all the top layers are still 6 inches shorter then everything else. Plus it’s expensive and the prices aren’t listed anywhere. She might make it up as she goes along.

Do you have curly hair? Amy @ TWIST will give you the BEST haircut you’ve ever had. Even when I’m in NYC, I always return to TWIST for my hairdo. The salon itself is fun and laid back with excellent rock n roll music playing. My experience there is always a good one. I’ve had a cut, shampoo, style, dye job, chemical relaxer, and probably more from her over the past four or five years, and I have absolute faith in her to treat me & my hair right. Amy is not only supremely gifted and talented when it comes to hair, but she’s vivacious and personable. BTW, Amy DiCamillo is the ONLYPERSONOTHERTHANMYSELF I trust to cut my bangs. Hello, if that’s not a vote of confidence, I dunno what is!

In the past Twist has done good things for my hair. The stylist/proprieter definitely has a rock and roll aesthetic(with pics of Marc Bolan on the walls and AC/DC playing on the stereo) but the past couple times I went she disregarded what I wanted and just did what she felt like doing. I have also seen her butcher the hair of a couple friends of mine. Can you say mullet? And it wasn’t one of those ironic, intentional things. I think the hair stylist here is capable of really dramatic, exciting work but sometimes she just doesn’t pay attention to what her clients want. If you really want a faux-hawk or maybe a chelsea, she can probably do a good job. If you just want a couple inches off the bottom, go somewhere else.
