I am a HUGE fan of pizza, and this was some of the best pizza I’ve ever tasted! The sauce is delicious, and the dough is thin and crunchy. I’m so bummed that I don’t live nearby — I would love to go back to Joey’s!

The location is still there but with two signs. The old Joey’s and a new name that starts with a V. But though open it is always empty. Pricey and no slices so useless for one person to go there alone.

I was pleasantly surprised that I liked this place. My boyfriend and I were heading towards Headhouse Square, when we passed this pizza place. Being the adventurous type, we thought we’d give it a whirl. Atmosphere isn’t anything to write home about, but the pizza was good enough, that we basically finished the pie. And the cherry tomato arugula salad gave our meal a nice balance.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Obviously these are not the opening words of a good review, Joey. I wanted to like your place Joey, truly I did! In fact, I thought I DID like you at first. You were cool while the ones who came before you(Venutos, KFC) sucked! You said you could do pizza just as well as the famous guy up the street(Stephen Starr at Pizzeria Stella) and at first that seemed true! You even did the BYO thing… Always cool. Sadly, though, you have failed to live up to your promise, and I really can’t consider you to be more than a good take-out pizza joint. If you were actually going for«high-end take-out» this review would be much higher, but you are obviously going for«actual restaurant», and it is at this level that you fail and at this level that I offer opinion. What’s really vexing is that the places where you fall short are the really EASY things, and the fact that you apparently don’t «get» these points is strong evidence that you just don’t understand what it takes to run a successful«actual» restaurant. To wit: Décor — Wall-to-wall framed posters of Bruce Springsteen and The Stones, etc. Really? Is there no one in your extended family who has a more tasteful eye that could have assisted you with this? As it stands it looks like you raided the dumpster of Beyond The Wall down the street the night after they emptied their stockroom of things no one has actually paid money for since 1985. Food — The pizza is well constructed with good ingredients and cooked well. But a pizza that says it has prosciutto on it really needs to have more than a single deli slice cut into a few microscopic pieces. This is the case with every topping you offer: Way, way too little. Up your(already on the high side) prices by another buck a pie if you must, but you MUST put more of those good ingredients on a pizza to make what you have to offer be memorable. Ambience — How about a little music? Is the idea that crazy? The commercial jingles that air in between innings of the Phillies game you have blaring from 3 televisions do not count as music, just so’s ya’ know. And the lighting… c’mon! Something a little dimmer and more inviting than the wall-to-wall neon you get at your neighborhood Target would go a long way… do you really need this pointed out to you? And do not get me started on your A/C sich! This is Philadelphia. It gets hot here. People don’t like to eat hot pizza or hot anything else when they are already dripping with sweat. Now don’t lie to me again like you did last time about it being«on the fritz»… we both know that’s just not true. I’ve been to your place three times this summer and the A/C hasn’t been on once. You don’t have A/C and you need it, so do what you gotta do and get it. No one wants to see businesses of quality be successful on otherwise forlorn and tacky South Street than I do. I have been to your place six times now, always hoping for the best. Like I said: Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me… Shame on me.

I don’t usually write reviews but I wanted to give this place a shout out hoping that it will stay in business cause things looked kind of slow. I had lunch there on July 2nd and the pizza was great. My salad was so fresh I did not need to put any dressing on. The service was good and I will definitely return. So for all you people who always go to Stellas give this place a shot.

I walked by this place a bunch of times, and after eating there once, we decided to add it to our weekly routine. The ambiance is a little strange, with some iconic Philly photos intermingled with bizarre Hollywood moments, and the place has a bunch of HDTVs with different channels on, but audio from only one. It’s kind of weird to watch the Office with audio from Jeopardy, but it’s really a minor thing. The place is well lit, clean and inviting. The waitress is SO Philly, I love it. Warm, down to business, and perfect for South Street. On to the food, which is probably why you stopped by anyway. The pizza here is really tasty. Thin crispy crust and a very tangy sauce make a great combination. I’ve tried a different specialty pie each time, and haven’t been disappointed yet. The meals also come with a free glass of wine, which isn’t the tastiest, but a really nice touch to the experience. They also have daily specials, of which we sometimes try the appetizer. They are pretty creative and are actually really tasty. Although I like the pizza so much, I probably won’t order the entrée specials. Overall, a great thin crust pizza place on South St. Definitely worth checking out!

EXCELLENT pizza. Crisp crust, delicious sauce with chunks of tomatoes, and fresh ingredients. I ordered a lunch special, which had a 12 inch 1 topping pizza with a fountain drink for $ 8.95. The tiramisu was okay. The service was great and they offered us complementary wine! Would definitely go back there.

Mmm, pizza. I really dug this place! We rolled through last on the hunt for some pies and were not disappointed. It’s BYOB, so we brought some Yards and ordered a salad with two pies — Margherita and half pepperoni, half sausage. The pizza here is really unique — very crispy thin crust, but delicious, and served with what were really fresh ingredients. The Caesar salad was awesome too, and came with warm pieces of focaccia bread. Service was friendly and on point — they even brought out a bucket to keep our beers cold. They were also offering complimentary wine to those who didn’t bring their own drinks. All in all, I loved the pizza here, because it’s different! I’ll definitely be back. Just make sure to order a large pizza, or two of the smaller pies, as the crust is thin. That’s not a bad thing, as you can appreciate the ingredients more.

We finally tried this place for takeout tonight — I was interested for a few reasons: 1) they brag on the quality of their ingredients; 2) the list of toppings on their menu is fairly atypical(Pepperoni, Sausage, Imported Cotto Cappicola, Anchovies, Artichoke Hearts, Arugula, Calamata Olives, Roasted Peppers, Italian Hot Peppers, Mushrooms, Onions, Garlic), and 3) they did a really classy renovation of their South Street space. So — we ordered a large tomato pie with sausage and arugula. It was pretty delicious. The crust was thin but crisp and sturdy, with a great smoky flavor and nicely chewy blisters. The light, fresh tomato sauce was dotted sparingly over the surface of the pie, as was the sharp, salty provolone. As for the toppings, the sausage was lean and crumbled. The baby arugula was scattered over the top after the pie was removed from the oven so it was warm but still crisp. We ordered an Italian salad as well, which was fresh and full of good stuff but otherwise nothing special except for the dressing, which was a very light olive oil vinaigrette. Prices were no bargain but were reasonable for the quality of the ingredients and the cooking.
