This was certainly my favorite Baltimore UYE yet. And what better way to show off Charm City than to give a tour to a complete stranger? Our guest of honor, Reena M. from Vancouver, knew she was going to be in Baltimore for a few days so, like every good traveling Unilocaler, she got on Baltimore Unilocal to see what was worth checking out. After a few days of chatting with her on the Baltimore talk threads some of the locals here just decided to throw her a Welcome to Baltimore Brunch. So that’s how this event started. Brunch at Meli, Gelato at Pitango, Blues at Cat’s Eye Pub and a walking tour of Fells Pt. in between. From Meli we walked past SoundGarden, The Horse You rode In On, mentioned Frederick Douglas and Isaac Myers, visited the Fell Family burial plot, walked down Shakespeare St. to show a west coaster what a really old city looks like. We stopped into Pitango for a gelato break and from the window watched a couple take wedding photos outside of Max’s Tap House. Who gets married at Max’s? Probably somebody pretty damn cool. Then we milled around Broadway and Thames and pointed left and right, up and down at the many many historical sites and events that made Baltimore what it is today. Followed that up with a few pints at the Cat’s Eye Pub while listening to one of the many awesome local blues bands who roll through that joint on the daily. And all of this came about because one cool Unilocaler from Vancouver asked us: «What’s cool in Baltimore?» Well, we are!

No excuse is too small to throw a Unilocal Baltimore UYE. All this one took was a one-off mention by Jamie S for a UYE celebrating the visiting Reena M of Unilocal Vancouver, an area of town picked by Yours Truly, and a venue embraced by regal Rob N and before one could say, «Pass me a bottle of pop, eh?», Unilocal Baltimore Den Mother, Noralyn T, had reservations set in stone for 20+ guests to gather for a sunny Sunday brunch at Meli. Yeah, Hon. It’s just that easy getting a UYE dedicated to oneself in Charm City. Our own private jazz trio swung out the 11:30 am jams, Bloody Mary’s & $ 15 Bottomless Mimosas flowed, and Unilocalers ate and drank. And drank some more. And then proceeded to drink some more. It was yet another UYE success helmed by Noralyn T. But how could it not be? She’s had tons of practice at these sorta gigs. Sis plans at least 8 – 10 Unilocal events a week, ya know ;-) And Baltimore’s Golden Boy, my bruddah, Jamie S, continued to impress & amaze as he lead a comprehensive & passionate tour of Historic Fells Point. Too bad I had to bail a few minutes into the tour. It was a pleasure & privilege finally meeting Reena M(GO, CANUCKS, GO!), partying with Unilocalers I’ve known for what seems forever, Unilocalers I’ve only known a few months, and Unilocalers I just met that day. (Mimosa? Yes, please, may I have another?) It’s safe to say I’d never met a UYE I didn’t like. But these Unilocal Baltimore events are really kicking some serious arse! Baltimore mapled Reena up real good! Eh, Hon?

Oh! My! God! This was the best UYE ever and I am so honoured that Noralyn, Jamie, Kit, and Rob helped organized this to show me the best of Balmer! Honestly, this was the highlight of my trip and I might even go as far as saying it’s one of my best trips ever! Brunch was amazing! I’m not sure I did much justice to the bottomless mimosas due to a hangover from the previous night. I had the brioche french toast with maple sausage and it hit the spot! I got it with both the berry compote and the maple syrup(because everything is better with maple!). Gelato at Pitango was heavenly! Even better than the gelato I’ve had in Vancouver and we have gelato everywhere. Jamie, our tour guide, did an awesome job showing us around with historical tidbits. I can see why everyone loves Fell’s Point. And coming from the West Coast, where everything is less old than the east coast, I was definitely in awe with all the architecture. Cat’s Eye Pub was a great conclusion to this lovely event. The Blues band playing was awesome!(the Jazz band at Meli’s was also great!) I’ve never seen live jazz before, or I can’t remember when I have, but it’s definitely my new favorite genre of music. And big big big Thank YOUs! for the parting gift, Jamie for picking me up and accompanying me on my postcard hunt, and Noralyn for setting it all up. This was truly such an amazing experience and not one I will forget so easily. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
