This is the best bookstore in Fairbanks. I especially appreciate their card selection. If you haven’t been, it’s worth going even if you aren’t looking for a particular book.

Good food and quick and friendly service, but the prices are ridiculously high for very basic food.

It’s actually the Second Story Café. Sandwiches, wraps, etc. High quality. Keep in mind that when you go here you are making a contribution to the local economy but be assured the flavor will not disappoint, so if you consider your patronage a donation to keep the local & proud thing going you will not be so disheartened with the actual quantity for the price. Outdoor seating big plus, provided that it is not 40 below or 90 above and the mosquitos aren’t out.

BOOKS+BAGELS+GUMBO=Tailor-made to suit all forseeable needs! Surprising amount of new releases. Large fiction section. Reasonably priced. Most importantly, they are happy with you sitting on the floor, creating leaning towers of their merchandise.

Pretty well organized used book store upstairs, decent coffee, and yummy wraps. The pesto turkey wrap was delicious, the hungarian mushroom soup was only so-so. Well worth a visit in the otherwise food impaired city of Fairbanks.

I love the Second Story Café. The make-your-own sandwich is my fave. All the ingredients they have to select from are yummy & unique(hummus, cucumbers, shredded carrot, peppercini, etc…). Every day of the week has a different soup special and they are all very good. You can get a 10% discount off of your lunch if you show your UAF Polar Express ID.

I love the quirkiness of this Fairbanks bookstore and café. The wraps are delicious and fresh while served in an old school bookstore environment that puts Barnes and Noble to shame.

Enjoyed a delicious business lunch on the deck last week. Pesto turkey wrap was meticulously prepared and had wonderful flavor. Hungarian wild mushroom soup is the special on Thursdays and had been recommended to me– a must try, so very good!

Seriously, cool place. Cheap books, good food and the tall glass of their mocha quells my coffee semi-addiction. Walking in, you get the homey feeling of a mom and pop bookstore(which makes sense because Gulliver’s is exactly that). The place has a pleasant booky musk to it too, something this book nerd appreciates and misses. Downstairs is the book store where you can find newer books, ranging from Alaskan history/geography to philosophy, cooking and children’s books. Upstairs is the café, the study area and their used books section. I bought two books, had a veggie wrap and a mocha latte and spent less than $ 30 here! I count that as a successful day, peoples! There seems to be a #WallPlugFail in Fairbanks cafes — there’s never enough of ‘em! Do people/students leave their homes/dorms to study around here, or what??! Gulliver’s suffers from the same plague. I saw maybe 3 plugs, which is a damn damn shame! If you’re going to call yourself a «café», renovate and add some outlets y’know? Anyway, that’s my rant for the day. I saw some Sarah Palin breath mints that mocked her all around stupidity. Should’a bought those too. All in all, not bad.

I’ve been trading books here since I was a wee thing. The owner maintains a consistent presence, the employees are helpful and don’t seem to turnover very often, which is really nice. They do special orders and one time I was told my book would be $ 10 or so on arrival and when they called me to say it had arrived they only charged me 6 something… what a deal, I love honest businesses. Employees are always willing to track down used book titles for you before trying to sell you new stuff. Recently they’ve added fun gift items from brands like«Fred» as well as fair trade products from around the world. It is NOT a sacrifice to shop here to support a local business– it is a special treat! Very close to the university– I would stop after class and grab a turkey pesto wrap on my way to work a few times a week. Café offerings are great too– by donation drip coffee, plenty of restrooms, handicap access, delicious food, meeting rooms, concert/event ticket sales, the list goes on.

The Café: Wonderful sandwiches, very good soups, good prepared coffee drinks and free brewed coffee(with donation box next to it.) The Bookstore: Both new and used books. Used books are almost always in great condition. New books are often on sale. Journals, unique Alaska items, and other neat novelty items. Love this place.

Very interesting bookstore. Lots of neats gifts and knick knacks. The used books are located upstairs. They didn’t have the book that I was looking for so i didn’t buy anything.

I went to Gulliver’s seeking a specific book that was supposed to be in wide release as of November 15th. They didn’t have it. The salesperson was completely unfamiliar with the title and, after looking up some information on her computer, said that none of Gulliver’s suppliers had the book and she didn’t know when they would-that it possibly hadn’t been published yet. Um, sorry, Gulliver’s. Your corporate rival was quite familiar with the title and had lots of copies in stock. While I will make every effort to purchase the book at an online independent retailer instead of a corporate chain, your lack of knowledge and unwillingness to help was a real turn-off. I’d rather shop online than come to you for misinformation and crummy customer service.

It is very refreshing to find a successful independent bookstore that has so much to offer. The selection of new and used books makes you think twice about ever going to a large chain bookstore. Upstairs you can whet your appetite with the Second Story which serves up light café favorites, and the coffee bar can successfully keep you up past your bedtime. Seating is available if you want to relax and read a bit, and there’s also free wi-fi for those that would rather check Facebook or scan Craigslist for that perfect pair of bunny boots for the winter. The staff seem to enjoy their jobs a lot more than their corporate counterpart. They are knowledgeable and willing to help in your search for whatever book suits your interest. If you cannot find what you are looking for, ordering a book here is a simple process. Do yourself a favor and«unchain» yourself from big bookstores(their mantra).

Imagine this: You’re in the farthest north, full service, independent bookstore in world. Then, suddenly and unexpectedly, you’re starving. What is there to do? The Second Story Café is the answer. To everything… ever! From the friendly staff to the yummy vegan options, this place is the most delicious sandwitch shop in town.(Sorry Lulu!!) You can kick back with your favorite paperback and warm up with a full coffee bar. This place is adorable. If you’ve not been in a while, totally worth a trip back. Check the website for the specials!
