Best untapped resource on the east coast. Some of the best trail heads are hard to find without gps or local help. Other than that of you can find you’re way and get out to the good spots it won’t disappoint.

This forest has beautiful areas though be prepared for bad roads once you get off the main ones. The tend to be dirt roads that are bumpy and potholed. GPS usually gives out quickly once you get off the main roads too so bring a paper map or be prepared to go on forever and hope you reach your destination. Not much to eat out here either so bring food! Also the few restrooms I encountered are pit toilets.

The Mon is nearly a million acres of mountain playground that invites you to get a serious workout climbing and descending the forest of West Virginia. There are so many amazing places in the Mon, it is hard to pick just one place, but I recommend the Otter Creek Wilderness. This pristine wilderness area looks like a green fairyland of ferns and moss in spring & summer. It’s a leaf peepers and cross-country skiing paradise in fall & winter. Bring good hiking boots, sunglasses, and plenty of water and food. Bring a map. Bring your camera. Turn off your iPod. Listen to the sounds of the woods. If you walk quietly you may see wildlife up close that you never expected. Bears, deer, birds, fox, bobcats, and coyotes all live here. You can hike all day here and never see another person or hear an airplane. PLEASE don’t leave your trash. Pack it up in your backpack and take it home with you. Please camp and hike responsibly. Our mountain playground deserves to be treated with respect.

Great place for camping. If you are in the area, make sure to visit Seneca Rocks and Blackwater Falls. The other great place for camping around is Audra State Park.
