Just send suspected terrorists to Popes on a Friday night instead of Gitmo… it’s all you’ll need to extract a full confession. If being deafened doesn’t break them, then the multiple renditions of Redneck woman or the ambiguously gay DJ’s singing songs by the Brady Kids, or the patron that looks like Elvis but cannot sing like Elvis, will. I liken the ambiance to the seven circles of hell. The wait staff is the only redeeming quality of this place and even that is pushing it. We made the mistake of ordering a pitcher & a pizza, not knowing karaōke was about to begin… as soon as the defining sounds of cheesy music were unleashed, we tried to choke the pizza and pitcher down as quickly as possible, however… at one point I got up and said«I’ve had enough, I don’t care if we aren’t finished» and we left half a pizza and half a pitcher. 5 more minutes in that place and I’d have been bleeding from my ears and reached an inconsolable point of hysterics. oh…and it smells like stale beer, vomit, old ash tray, mold and Glade in the foyer… It kind of slaps you in the face when you walk in the door. Even if you like dives, i’d steer clear of this place. It’s just nasty inside and the pizza is not very good.

It was Friday night and Popes Pub and Pizzeria was very crowded. Popes is located at 66 East Devon Ave., Elk Grove Village, Il just ½ block East of Arlington Heights Road, on the North side of the street. There is plenty of parking at the restaurant. Popes has a dinning area and a Bar area. They have tables, booths and bar seating. The establishment is set in low level lighting and is very comfortable to either dine or drink in. The interior is constructed of dark hard wood which give it an old fashion or Wisconsin Supper Club atmosphere. In the bar area, there are six separate large screen televisions to view sporting events or other entertainment. A friend and I, decided to sit in the bar and enjoy the Karaōke show. My friend sings an awesome«Edge of Seventeen, «by Steven Nicks. Both the dinning room and the bar were busy. The bartender named«Margret» immediately waited on us which I found impressive. There is nothing more I cant stand is when a bartender neglects to greet a customer in a timely fashion. The drink prices were very reasonable and according to «Margret» they have several drink specials. There was a large Margarita dispenser behind the bar for serving Margaritas that are on special. The bar crowd was a mixture of both young and older patrons. The Karaōke was being hosted by Dan and Jorge, who are experienced performers with a following of Karaōke customers. They played many 1980s, dance hits in-between singers and it got some of the local ladies dancing. They played some New Order, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and other retro hits. The crowd was really having a fun time. On Fridays the bar stays open until 2am. Popes has a full service kitchen and serves both lunch and dinner. They are the Home of the Award Winning Garlic Royale & the Original Popes Pizza. Popes is Family owned and operated and has served the community for over 35 years. They have dine-in, delivery, carry-out, catering, private parties and the full service bar. Their menu includes, appetizers, salads, soups, house favorites, pizza, pasta, a kids selection, fish, flamed broiled burgers and other sandwiches. The food prices are also very reasonable and Popes is great to treat the Family to dinner. Popes excepts cash and major credit cards as payment. They also have an ATM, on sight for customers to obtain funds. I found that«Margret» was an excellent bartender and that the Karaōke night was a fun time. I would definitely return and if you like Karaōke Shows visit them on a Friday Night. I would recommend this place if one is in the Elk Grove Village area. Good Service, a great show and good times. it’s a four Star FUNPLACE… Sing, laugh, eat and drink often. Life is Short.(:

My husband and I went here over the summer, but there are a few things that stuck out in my mind. 1. The place had a definite aroma of urine. It was probably b/c the place doesn’t have any windows that open and you could tell that the crowd that frequents the restaurant was definitely the smoking crowd. I’m sure there was several years of nicotine tar build up on the walls and that’s where the odor was coming from. 2. Our waitress was wearing open toe shoes. That grossed me out. Aren’t those that work in a restaurant supposed to wear closed toe shoes? Yeah, it’s hot in the summer, but put some shoes on when you’re working in the kitchen and serving food. 3. We sat and watched our waitress eat her dinner while we were waiting for our salads. She took our order, went in the kitchen, brought out her meal and proceeded to nosh. I’m not saying that a waitress can’t eat, but come on! 4. The garlic royale pizza was pretty amazing. The pizza was so good it’s really a shame that the two pitfalls are going to prevent us from ever eating there again. I have no problem with dives, which is what this place is, but those stinky pee and nasty toes shouldn’t be part of an eating experience. I really wish I could rate this place based on their food. We won’t even dare to get take out from here. Shameful b/c the food was so good.

I’ll just start out by saying I agree with everything Bill B. said in his review. This is basic, good, Midwestern style thin, crackery crust pizza. Not real spicey. They use good ingredients. The restaurant is still a throwback to its origins as a family pizza restaurant in the early 70’s, and this nostalgia factor rings home with me. The staff was very friendly to my daughter and me. No, it’s not the best pizza in the world. But they have no pretense or attitude. It’s a nice, family pizza restaurant with good food, period.

Not too shabby and not too great either. The guys that make the food. top notch cats, can’t really fault them in one bit. The food is OK, again not too shabby. The ownership is well run as best that can be expected, this is a side biz for the owners. Overall, this is a great place for the family to grab a slice or two and the bar is good as well. It’s just what it was in my mind as a kid in the 70’s, maybe that is time and nostalgia doing the talking, but the food is good. they never cut those corners Jake’s e.g. Pope’s is a good joint if you are in town.

Let me start out saying the food is good. I like the pizza and the wings are good to. The problem is the staff on Friday for the lunch buffet. I was in with 6 other people doing their lunch buffet. We had to wait 10 minutes for pizza because they only put out 3 at a time. Secondly, the waitress added an 18% gratuity to our bill for a buffet and she charged us 11% tax on the bill as well. Last time I checked the tax rate is 10.25 percent(not that .75% on a seven dollar bill is going to kill me its just the principle). This is the second time I have been here because I like the food. the first timer we were hear the waitress failed to inform us that drinks do not include free refills until we were on our third round of lemonade and soda. At 2.00 a glass it was not a nice surprise. This is going to sound cold but after the attitude we got from the waitress this afternoon I will not go back until she is gone and I wouldn’t recommend anyone to Pope’s.

Some of y’all may have pegged me for a suburb hater, but I give credit where credit is due. I got a soft spot for dark, woody, olde english pub lookin’ pizza joints. Stopped in here with the wife and brother in law & his missus awhile back, and damned if it wasn’t a quite nice dining experience. The food was purty good, the ambiance was actually very good(as was the service). Beer selection was sorta ass but that’s what I expect out this way, and hell Miller goes down just fine after a few anyway. I’d definitely return.

Exceptional thin crust pizza. The garlic royale, with crushed tomatoes and garlic, is divine. Good service and a nice lunch buffet during the week.
