Unfortunately Arigato did not live up the hype that everyone has mentioned from their Unilocal reviews. The current location of this restaurant used to be another sushi joint. I don’t recall when the old restaurant was closed but when my friend mentioned a new sushi spot opened up, I was intrigued. Arigato turns out to be a All-You-Can-Eat(AYCE) kind of Japanese restaurant that customers pay for one price, and eat as much as you want/can. $ 25 for AYCE sushi is a decent deal in Edgewater(as there aren’t any restaurants that does the same in the area). The interior design of the restaurant is more of a comfy family style with a laid back grey-ish color theme for a quiet enjoyable dining experience. There are approximately 16 to 20 tables that can fit all sizes of customer groups and it is quite spacious. My friend hosted her birthday dinner party at Arigato last night and we made a reservation ahead of time. Due to the size of our group, we were divided into 2 large tables(12 people per table). We arrived exactly at 8 and were seated immediately. Our waiters then proceed to hand us the menus and order sheets for us to look and order. The menus are easy to elaborate and clear as all the sushi rolls were priced and pictured(Individual price option available for all the sushi rolls if you choose to not do the AYCE option). There are lots of options to choose from, including different staters(your classic miso soup, edamame, gyoza etc.), entrees(chicken/shrimp teriyaki etc.) to regular maki rolls, sushi and speciality rolls. If you’re a foodie like me, you would get so excited seeing all these options and don’t know where to start! So here is the reason why Arigato only getting a 2 stars… We waited an hour and 30 mins for our food to arrive… Did I mentioned an hour and 30 minutes? Apparently the sushi chefs(yes they only have 2 chefs and was clearly short staffed) were not able to keep up all the orders(there were a good 10 other tables dining the same time as our group) and were having a hard time to catch up, hence such a huge delay to serve our food. Our waiters apologized and asked us if there is anything they can accommodate while we wait for our orders. They gave us some appetizers(tempura, gyoza, miso soup and shumai) to munch on while we wait. The appetizers were decent(it tasted average to me, but you would eat it because you’re starving waiting for your entrees). Good thing was, our group was having some good time catching up and chatting away while waiting for our food. An hour and half later when the food arrives, we devoured all our rolls immediately. To be honest, I’ve had better sushi rolls else where but being said as this restaurant serves you rolls AYCE for $ 25… I wouldn’t complain much. However in the mist of our chaotic waiting mode, our waiter messed up our orders and gave us sushi rolls that our table didn’t order. But then again, we still ate it as we were starving and didn’t think twice to double check until we were half way through our rolls. Overall, the experience was mediocre and I’ve had much better sushi else where. Price wise this place does deserve a try but I would recommend only trying this place out with a much SMALLER group. I would give Arigato a second chance next time when I go with a small group of friends and family and see if they can redeem themselves! Until then, best of luck to whoever wants to try this place out and chow down some sushi rolls!

Did you say AYCE?(for newbies, thats All You Can Eat) Yes, yes I did. and Arigato has mastered that special. For $ 25 per person, enjoy about 15 various Special rolls, 10 regular rolls, a few dinner apps, and even 4 different choices of ice cream to choose from as a dessert. Although it doesnt serve alcohol, its BYOB and theres a liquor store not too far by. There is a regular menu to choose from, and order rolls from one by one… but let’s be honest here, thats not why i came ! AYCE Rules: Only share with other AYCE customers, must eat everything, and if youre a group or table, one paper per table… so try to remember what you order. Everything comes on one plate. The kitchen appetizers are unique, because theres some squid, crab, and even spicy tuna balls. Also, veggie dumplings/shumai which is great cuz most places will have only pork or shrimp. However, theres no seaweed or kani salad included in the all you can eat. Onto the sushi… the Philly Roll, Kamikazee, Volcano, Grand Slam and White House rolls are a must get. Theres a decent amount of fish to rice scale on all of the rolls. Face it, its americanized and theres going to be alot of rice, and chrunchy and other elements thrown into it, but the fish itself seems as fresh as it can get and the rice wasnt too hard or over powering. Also, the spicy mayo actually has a kick to it, which is great. Sadly, shashimi is not included, BUT there are a few selections of Nigiri which is great. Those are on the small side i have to say. Service wasnt too bad. For only the second night, the 3 sushi chefs kept things moving perfectly. There were about4 waiters who were on top of us and were helpful to refill our waters and open beer. Really no complaints here. The only odd thing was the valet parking. i feel its un neccessary, its a small parking lot with about 6 spots litterally 2 feet away from the door, but hey if you wanna use it be my guest. Also, they do deliver but $ 40 min!

Interesting to see how this plays out. I feel that Sushi Village is the current class act(RIP Bamboo) of AYCE sushi in Bergen County and Arigato has some ways to go to get in the same ballpark. The space: Looks nice and was clean/modern looking. It did seem weird that you couldn’t sit at the sushi bar thought :( The food: To be honest, nothing really jumped out at me on the kitchen menu. Salad, dumplings… but what’s with the super large orders? I understand you want me to get full and not order the more expensive sushi… but really? Seemed a bit excessive, but I’m a slovenly pig so it didn’t effect me much. The sushi menu certainly had many choices. I think choice is always a good thing. A few nigiri pieces(no sashimi though), a bunch of standard rolls and LOTS of crazy Americanized maki with 4 – 6 ingredients doused in heavily caloric sauces. I appreciate the menus have photos of all the special rolls, which helps alot to know what you’re getting or for people who aren’t super sushi savvy. I don’t like rolls with fruit, so I always avoid those and fortunately they don’t have many, but that’s a personal preference. I tried a few standards… spicy tuna, eel/avocado which were perfectly fine and edible. I also tried a few special rolls and to be honest they felt incomplete. A little on the small side, light on the ingredients(the soft shell crab was way bigger in the photo) but were tasty enough. The service: The first plates of sushi came out fairly quickly, but two things stuck out with the service. First, please don’t hover. I know how all you can eat sushi works. You asked and I said I know the deal(plus I can read, unlike most Unilocalers). I know that I can’t share unless everyone at my table is getting AYCE and that I need to finish everything or they’ll charge full price, even if I leave one piece of your roll. (As an aside, most places say this, but I haven’t seen them enforce it if you leave the errant roll of nigiri. I’m guessing this is for major offenders, but who knows… Arigato may be a place that lays the hamma down). So in conclusion of point number one… blah, blah blah. I told you, I get it, I know the deal. Second, don’t take twice as long to bring my second(or third, etc) plate of sushi as you did for the first. I don’t care if other people abuse the all you can eat. If you don’t want to lose money and want to limit what I order, then don’t f@cking offer all you can eat! I understand there are people that waste, but charge them and waste their time, not mine. I realize the menu isn’t a binding contract, but if you want to build goodwill with customers: do the right thing… and make the rolls bigger too… so I’ll ORDERLESS!!! Look, I understand for $ 25 I’m not going to get the fanciest cuts of otoro(which because of overfishing, no one should serve these days anyway), uni and serve these dishes with the world’s most perfect crafted sushi rice. And while Arigato was good, I really do feel they need to work on giving a little more from the sushi bar and less from the kitchen. Considering the fake, I mean Unilocal reviews of their North Haledon location(which is only $ 20), I’m hopeful they will find the right balance here at their new Edgewater home. Note: All misspellings are intentional. Other reviewers incorrect grammar and spelling are clearly not(got back to fourth grade).
