3.5 stars Nice neighborhood sushi spot. Ambiance is nice, service is friendly and quick. Nothing special about the food we ordered but it was good. In the category of neighborhood sushi spots in Bergen County, this place is really nice. It feels intimate and clean inside.

Hey Kaname, read and heed, bigger doesn’t mean better. I ordered the deluxe sushi special which comes with miso soup, 5 pieces of sushi and a tuna roll. The sushi, if you can call it that, consisted of a huge piece of not so fresh fish on top of a huge piece of tasteless rice and a ton of overpowering wasabi. Undoubtedly the worst sushi I’ve ever had. The miso soup was the only edible part of the meal. Go elsewhere, don’t waste your time.

Kaname offers you an sushi bar experience that closely resembles the ones in Japan. The prices are slightly higher than average compared to your ordinary Japanese restaurant, but that is because is cuts are of higher quality and fresher. He gets his fish deliveries at least three times a week, compared to the average which are once or twice a week. This is important because you can only refreeze and thaw fish so many times before it tastes like crap. As a result you are guaranteed fresh fish every time. Not only that the nigiri are actually the sizes they’re SUPPOSED to be, just like Japan. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been screwed over with some pathetic cut of sushi. *cough H***** Kaname also offers a large selection of sake. If sake is not your style, there is full bar where you can order whatever you want. If you want the Chef to choose for you, just do Sushi Omakase and you’ll get the best picks of that day. Chef George(owner) is usually in on Thursdays and he’ll hook you up, he’s been doing this for thirty years.

Kaname is a small, but better than average Japanese restaurant. I have only tried the sashimi dinner here, and ordered it to go. the food arrived within 10 minutes and the service was pleasant enough, and I would be open to dining in on another occasion. The sashimi dinner might appear more expensive than most places, at 24 dollars, but this is simply because Kaname provides much higher quality sushi and sashimi at very decent portions. The actual dinner included 3 pieces of salmon sashimi, 5 pieces of tuna(maguro), 3 pieces of hamachi, and 3 pieces of mackerel: nothing special, but very fresh and portioned well. The sashimi slices themselves were cut much thicker than most places, which is what sets it apart from the other sushi spots around. the salad and miso soup that came with the meal were average, nothing special. The rice was also quite average, and given in a large portion. overall the sashimi is quite solid, and I would be open to trying out the other menu options here.

Extremely rude and unprofessional staff. I had to call back 3 times because the woman kept hanging up on me. When I arrived to pick it up, I was charged incorrectly and the same woman from the phone call made a huge scene about it, mocking me for saying I was charged too much. The chef came to handle the situation and kept saying it would’ve been a better experience if I would’ve just dined in. I have the flu so of course I didn’t want to dine in and my pick-up experience shouldn’t be treated any less important than a dine-in. I mentioned to the woman that she shouldn’t be hanging up on customers and she claimed it was too busy, and when I looked around, I was the only customer since they’ve only been open for the past 5 min. I will be taking my business elsewhere, and it’s a shame because my family and I have been coming here for several years because of the food, but I already know a handful of nearby restaurants that have equally as good, if not better, food AND a polite staff. Never coming back again.

Good foods and very friendly service. We live close by so it was nice to take a stroll there. They do have a parking lot at the back. We got sashimi dinner, couple of specialty rolls, and a beef yaki udon. Sashimi was wonderful but udon was a bit salty and was sparse with the beef. Overall, it was a good experience and we will come back.

Awful lunch specials. I just finished my lunch from Kaname and just had to write a review. First of all, Kaname is a bit pricier than other sushi joints, so I was expecting either superior quality or better portions. When I received my chicken teriyaki lunch special to-go, I was shocked. I opened the container to see unseasoned blanched bean sprouts, two broccoli florets with two carrot sticks, and 6 small pieces of fatty chicken. Wow was that disappointing. The teriyaki sauce was on the sweeter side, but it was bearable. The salad and the miso soup didn’t make things better either. Overall, I am really bummed that I paid for $ 12 for that. Won’t be going back. The only reason why I gave Kaname two stars is because of the staff. They were all very kind and attentive.

Finally found a good japanese restaurant near Fort Lee area. Came there on Wednesday, the fish was fresh and very decent portion of sashimi! Grilled squid was great and gingery. The place is clean and inviting. Steaks were cooked to requested temperature and delicious! Will be back for sure!

This place is definitely a hit or miss. Quality of food is never bad but nothing too special and consistency can be an issue. The owner /sushi chef seems to have a great personality and patrons seem to enjoy his company. But my review is strictly on the food I’ve been served. Great thing about this place is that as a person who enjoys sashimi, cut is pretty thick. On a good day, fish quality is so fresh, I wonder why they can’t keep up the same quality. Then other times, I’ve come across mediocre quality of sashimi, which is never a pleasing thing.

Amazing Japanese food. Very surprised that they don’t have a 5 star rating. I will be returning back often for sure. Great neighborhood find, Yay!

This place I and my fiancé really liked. I wish it maybe $ 2 less expensive. I’d still come back. Got the wasabi steak and tempura combo. Parking was easy and quick service.

This is one of last Japanese restaurants in northern NJ where owner and sushi chefs are Japanese. And considering their rather authentic menu(you won’t find rainbow or spicy dragon roll here), one would expect high quality fish. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you get; big, delicious sushi and sashimi pieces. But other times, you can get not-so-fresh fish. On more than several occasions, I’ve had fish that was very fishy tasting. It’s usually hirame(flounder), and unfortunately, most dishes come with a lot of hirame pieces. This lax quality control is rather unfortunate and disappointing, and is probably most attributable to the owner’s policy. It’s not exactly a cheap place to eat either. I’m thinking the only way to get the best pieces is to sit at the sushi bar and get to know the chefs.

I’m surprised at so many mediocre reviews. Its a good sushi spot, has good service and yes, is in dire need of a renovation. But I still feel the good outweighs the bad significantly.

Our service staff was completely ignorant of our presence from the start. Even after she discovered us, she constantly ignored us, forgot what we ordered, and generally treated us with respect. Service was slow even with only 5 parties in the whole building. In addition our sushi was prepped about 25 minutes in advance, so the taste declined and it was room temperature. Nothing like oversized chunks of wet warm fish to ruin your night. The menu was limited and the grilled foods were overbooked. In sorry to say this dining experience was a mistake. The point: Don’t bother.

This popular, trendy Japanese restaurant, nestled conveniently in the shadow of dozens of high-rise apartments and condos, is unique in one key feature I’ve found nowhere in all my sushi fare wanderings(a significant statement). Their sashimi cuts are the biggest I have ever seen and the photos only capture a partial and poor perspective of their awesome, meaty size. I watched as my brother and our local dinner mates did their very best to deftly grip the sushi between their inefficient chopsticks, maneuver the piece through their shoyu and try to take a bite while I’d simply grab the thing with red-painted talons, slop it through the sauce and take the necessary three or four bites to claim sushi success… I’m such a lady(but hey, I didn’t drop one piece). Anyone trying to finish off one of these babies in less than that takes the chance of choking and this gal isn’t CPR certified anymore. You’re going downtown with the paramedics. The edamame was not fresh and failed to generate any snap while the miso soup was the most flavorful item that I tried. But soup is soup and we didn’t come here for that. And unfortunately, a healthy, generous cut of fish won’t hide the fact that it was not the best available, the otoro being downright tough and chewy. Tuna belly should melt in your mouth. I’m just glad the Sapporo was flowing liberally or I may have caused a stink, embarrassed my brother’s friends and got to meet owner George under less than favorable terms. When eating sushi, it’s always best to be friends with the staff. I need to return as my brother said that it wasn’t their best day and give them another shot. I never wish to offend but want to be honest and this visit was not something to write home about… except for the size of the cuts. *Pix up
