Evergreen Plantation

The Plantation offers student tickets for the price of $ 18. This place is notably one of the biggest, most intact plantations.
Our guide was Renee. She was fabulous! She was very knowledgeable and told quick but captivating stories on the past of Evergreen. Here you’ll get a more «like the original» as possible. Things were replicated or moved only if they had to. The scenery was breathtaking! The oak lined pathway is quite beautiful! You’re in for a treat if you come here. Renee literally MADE!!! the tour.

Main house has been updated as it is a secondary residence for the owner. Renee, the tour guide was fantastic! Very knowledgeable. The oaklined drives were amazing! Original slave quarters.

Absolutely gorgeous plantation approximately 45 minutes outside of New Orleans. We rented a car for $ 30 and made a day trip out of it.
This plantation is the most «complete» plantation in the south. What does that mean? It means it wasn’t torched by Union soldiers during the Civil War and close to 40 buildings on the property are in excellent condition and are on the National Historic Landmark Register. The slave cabins (22 in all), as I understand it, are the best preserved slave cabins in the country. You are looking at completely original woodwork, fireplaces, etc. that are something like 200 years old.
Movie fans will recognize this beauty from Django Unchained (12 Years A Slave was filmed up the road at a neighboring plantation). The oak-​lined alleys are something to see alone. A tour runs 3 times a day. I think ours was about 1 hour 45 minutes long. Tickets are $ 20/​person. Our tour guide was a history major college student and was knowledgeable about the family history of the plantation. We walked the oak alleys, saw the slave cabins, the «big house», and the kitchen (a building which is separate from the big house). My only complaint, why I’m knocking a star is I really wish we could’ve seen inside some of the other buildings. There are two «garconnières», where young bachelors of the family would stay; two «pigeonniers» for keeping pigeons; an overseer’s cottage, and late 19^th century barns. They don’t let you into any of that. There was also a beautiful gazebo and statue in the distance (front «yard» area) that I would’ve loved getting a closer look at, too.
Overall, I definitely would call Evergreen Plantation a «must-​see» on a New Orleans vacation.

A must see if you visit New Orleans. Our tour guide Desiree is amazing, very knowledgeable and she takes you back to the 1800’s. I enjoyed my tour of Evergreen Plantation. Being able to see and touch the original cabins that my ancestors lived in was an amazing and very humbling experience. I recommend touring and experiencing Evergreen Plantation!

We wanted to know what is was like to live way back when. This preserved plantation allowed us to have a glance of this way of life.

Such a great tour and experience! Appreciated the history given and viewing of the house and slave quarters. Our tour guide Courtney was very knowledgeable and super nice. Would definitely recommend this place as it was my first plantation visit. They also have discounted rates for students and Django was filmed here!

Everyone should attend this is a great place for all races. A lot if misconceptions I had turned out to be not true but this was actually a good plantation if I had to judge of course no place was good but it seemed the slaves were treated decent.

What a beautiful plantation, and I am impressed with how well preserved buildings were.
It is well worth the visit, but I’m not sure about the tour guide. She didn’t appear to give half a sh*t and seemed annoyed. Only for that reason would I say the ticket cost is a little high. She was knowledgeable, however, even with the ultra-​dry delivery of the facts.

The tour was OK. Our tour guide was stiff and boring. No personality whatsoever. Sorry Tristian, I don’t think you and your wife are cut out for the tourist business.

My review may be a bit biased because we got a personal tour from an amazing member of staff who I don’t think usually does tours, but we learned so much. It was the most interesting to see the slave quarters. We were told about the lifestyles of both the owners and the slaves and no excuses were made. I had an extremely awkward tour at another plantation that was still family owned and we learned nothing about what life was like for the slaves and the family member who was giving us the tour of that plantation tried to knock Evergreen for allowing Django to be filmed there. I would recommend Evergreen over that other unnamed plantation any day if you want to see a gorgeous property with staff who don’t beat around the bush about the realities of the plantation life (and no they didn’t exaggerate, they just calmly explained history).

This plantation is worth the time getting there, it gives you an insight into Louisiana’s past.
The tour is about one and a half hours. The tour guides show you the plantation’s owners house with all the small buildings around it, for example the slave quarters and kitchen.
During the winter time the sugar canes that grow in the plantation are harvested so you won’t actually be able to see the plantation itself.
The staff is friendly and knowledgable. The tour is quite interesting and I would recommend this place for people who have 2 – 3 hours or so to spend.

If you’ve seen Django Unchained then you will recognize the front part of the house as Big Daddy’s House. Beautiful property, and it was very interesting to see the original slave cabins (used up until the 1940’s!). The guide we had was good but I feel like she should have more information for the house and the slave cabins, a lot of answers were «I don’t know, that’s just how it is».
Worth it to check out if only for the slave cabins.

Really beautiful grounds and great guide. I think her name was Carly… something with a C or K in any case. She was really knowledgeable and readily answered all our questions.
It’s a modest for our standards place but with plenty of history and it’s still a running sugar cane plantation. October-​December is the harvest season so you see the trucks pulling in and out, which is cool to see.
It’s also where Django was filmed so my friend, who has seen the film, loved seeing the place in real life.
This place doesn’t get nearly as much publicity as Oak Alley but the oaks are incredibly gorgeous here. The path up to the parking area is lined with them & it’s really quite breathtaking.
You also get a feel for how incredibly rough life was for slaves. It makes you really stop and think.
Definitely recommend this place.

Everyone below has already commented on all the historical significance of the property, so I’ll stick to the tour. For $ 20, you get an approximate 1 hour tour with a very knowledgable guide (there are several). I went on a weekday, for the 1400hrs tour, and there were only three (3) people, so it was a very intimate tour, and made it that much more interesting.
The Plantation is in unbelievable shape, and truly is a historic treasure for anyone interested in this type of thing.

Great tour if your interested in history. Visiting the slave quarters is so worth while… make sure when you visit, to make sure to bring cash or check for your tickets!!!

DO NOT MISS. This is not the most restored property nor the «prettiest» but it is one of the oldest, most complete plantation properties in the country. The slave living quarters are still standing, unlike any other plantation. There are improvements made in the early 1800’s from the original structure but they are the essence of this house. By far, historically, one of the plantations along River Road that is a MUST SEE. Our tour guide was full of the family history as well as a working knowledge of the Creole culture. If you are looking for overly fancy pass this one by.
The relationship of outbuilding to the main house is accurate at Evergreen as it hasn’t been pushed into just a few acres and still has 2200 acres. I was so impressed with the two oak alleys on the property. One as you entered the property near what may have been the original house on the property and the other from the main house through the slave quarters going toward what would have been the cane processing mill. Fabulous.

Evergreen Plantation was our 2^nd stop on the tour and the one I really wanted to see since I had been to Oak Alley twice. Not a lot of tours company’s offer a stop at this location. I’m guessing maybe because it’s a privately owned plantation and still in operation growing sugar canes. This place has some serious acreage. I wanted to come here to see the still intact double rows of 22 slave cabins they have on the grounds.
As we drove up and into the grounds you saw cows grazing and even some donkeys and llamas were around. We started the tour at the back with the smaller houses that were the (privy) bathrooms, guest quarters, boys house, kitchen and where the kitchen staff were located. Unlike Oak Alley the main house did not have a long walk way up through lines of trees. One of the attraction of the main house is the 2 spiral staircases on both sides of the house. As with other plantation there were no picture taking inside. As with most plantations there had been several remodels during each of the revivals. The house still had period pieces that were all very well kept and taken care of. There were also new things placed around as the house does get used personally by the owner from time to time.
Next we walked out over to the long road to where the slave cabins were located. The road leading up to it were all lined with Oak trees most of them covered in spanish moss and were almost as old as the one’s at Oak Alley. It was like going back in time as I walked up to the first cabin which was opened to be seen for tours. The cabins were very small. Each cabin was split down the middle making each half only a living space of 12×12. Each side was used by one family, so if they happen to be a large family it was pretty tight. Down the middle of each cabin was a fire place that opens on both sides so that each family can use it to cook and keep warm. It’s amazing to see how well these cabins have withstood all the harsh weathers and other elements of that time period throughout 100’s years. Our tour guide mentioned that there are often pilgrimages from Africa who come here and burn incense for their ancestors and ironically there was a few people that had just been there a week earlier. One cabin had a stool sitting up against the wall and I kept looking at it. In my mind’s eye I saw an old man sitting there with old working hands and his face tired and wrinkled from the hard work they’ve endured running the plantation. I can’t imagine how things have must have been like back then but I’m thankful for having come here to at least see what it looked like.
Our tour guide was absolutely awesome. She had that Cajun accent that I so love to hear. She was very knowledgeable about the plantation, history of the owners and how life was lived back in the day! Since its still a working plantation there is not gift shop here so takes lots of pictures.
