I just reviewed Fresh Market and mentioned T&Js, so figured I’d write a quick review. Go here for the meat. You will not find a better price locally. Their house-spiced porchetta is the best I’ve had – by far better than Longhini. Their groceries are more expensive than any of the local markets, as are the fruit & vegetables, so if you’re like me, a person who loves supermarkets, it’s no thing to make a few stops. The employees are friendly and I love the other people who shop there. I grew up in a v. Italian section of Brooklyn, and this place reminds me of home without actually having to circle the block 20 times until a spot opens up.

I’m a steak eater for the most part and live in Branford. I used to go to Ferraro’s in New Haven for my meat products. However, I have a friend in E.H. I did some work for and stopped in T. J’S to grab a steak for dinner on the way home. Ferraro’s always had reliable top shelf steaks(at a good price), but I was really blown away by the quality(and price) of the steaks at TJ’S. I’ve been back several times and never disappionted !! I’ve heard they might be facing some problems competing with the likes of Shop-Rite, Stop & Shop etc. coming into the area. I really hope that they get enough community support, and don’t have to succumb to the pressure of the chain store«giants» that could really care less about the QUALITY of what they sell.

It’s a small, cozy store good for stopping by for those quick last minute items or to pick-up some eggs/milk. They have pretty decent meat sales, and very good seafood«truck sales» during the season. The prices however for the grocery items and for some of the other things they carry, are higher than the big name food store giants such as Stop & Shop.

Go there for the meat, great cuts of meat at reasonable prices and friendly service. I try to go there for my meat and odds and ends and stock up on canned goods, etc. at whatever store has the best prices. The deli is good, the bakery and seafood selection is very small and seafood is all frozen, but that’s expected from a small neighborhood grocery store. They can have pretty good sales, and they don’t jack the price of the meat up before a sale, which is nice. They also reduce the prices of meat that is nearing the end of sale dates and don’t just price another date over the meat like some other stores. The seafood is frozen but you can get good bargains there as well, especially around the holidays.
