Stop & Shop Supermarkets

Oh, East Haven. The land of big 80s perms and even bigger attitudes.
I asked the lady in the bakery if they had any «regular old cheesecakes.» You know, a figure of speech. All I could find was chocolate or strawberry cheesecake.
You know what she said to me? «We don’t have any old cheesecake. It’s all fresh.» And then gave me a dirty look before pointing to where I could find the «regular old cheesecake» I was looking for.
Then she starts wheeling a cart of baked goods away from me, and I hear her saying it again…“we don’t have any old cheesecake.“
Geez louise lady. I don’t know if she was being serious or if that was just East Haven humor. I’m going to hope it was the latter.

Unfortunately this is one of 2 groceries stores near me, the other is Big Y and I will be doing all of my shopping there from now on. This S&S is chaos. The last few times I did go here the produce section was completely lacking. They were completely out of broccoli and brussel spouts. Those are not exotic requests. Beyond the inadequate produce the customer service is appalling. They never have enough front end staff, never enough real person registers open, never a bagger, rarely a full cart section… and it appears NOBODY THAT WORKS THERE CARES. I doubt they will care about this review either. Take my advise, save time and shop elsewhere!

Go anywhere but here! Went with my daughter & grandson for our weekly shopping, which is not usually at a S&S because of their high pricing. Had an item to return but there was only 1 person at customer service & long lines the entire time we were in store. Finally went to self check out but only 1 lane opened. Started scanning my order, after about 6 items it wouldn’t let me scan & said the item needed help??? Light flashed for assistance, no one came & we waited 3 – 4 mins. I politely went to customer service & said «excuse me is there anyone covering the self register»? The first time I was ignored, the second request was met with an «I heard you mame I’ll be with you when I’m done with these people, I’m only one person!» I asked if there was a manager who could help because we need to get kids off the bus? Ignored again! Went looking for manager on the front line & asked a few cashiers I passed if there was a manager. Ignored! So I loudly said «is there a manager that can help us over here!» No one answered, no one came! Another woman who was upset over something said «This is terrible, there’s no one to help us out!» She was being reprimanded by another cashier! My daughter & I looked at each other in disbelief because now 15 mins had gone by with no help, so we threw up our hands & said «let’s go!» We left our 2 full baskets of groceries & started to leave when the first cashier finally walked over & cleared my register. Once again I got «mame’d» & told «your register is ready!» but I said it’s too late we have to get kids off the bus.” We went in the car & literally cried out of frustration & embarrassment! We felt defeated that we planned our time & left after an hour with nothing! My daughter had to go out later when her husband came home just to grab something for dinner & I went to another store & did my shopping all over again! How humiliating & inconvenient! Corporate will be getting a call!
We will never go to this store again!

For people living in East Haven or the East Shore of New Haven, this store is mainly worthwhile to go to for the sake of convenience. The prices are a little high, but not any higher than other similar chains in the area.
Recently, the store has added huge advertisements on the back side of most carts, which you cannot avoid seeing as you shop on everyone else’s carts. This is a huge insult, because customers are not there to be moving billboards for Stop and Shop to rent out to advertisers.
After years of shopping at this store, I am done with it.

This place has a decent selection of merchandise, they expand and remodel the store often, usually every few years or so. The price of groceries are little over-​priced, but that’s typical of Stop & Shop. They offer a Pharmacy, Bakery, Deli, Seafood/​Meat counter, and Florist Shop. They currently have a Dunkin’ Donuts, but it’s rumored to be on it’s way out.
