Gazpacho New Mexican Cooking y Cantina

This Mexican restaurant had such a cute atmosphere and location. There are warnings about the level of spice in their chile sauce, so I was a little concerned as we don’t care for extremely spicy food. But, once seated, our server, Sam G., explained that they can leave the sauce off the top and replace with queso, which was delicious. I had the stuffed sopapillo and it was delicious! The chips and salsa were great. It is comparable in price to other eating establishments in Durango. Our server was attentive and kind. Would go again, for sure.

Great salsa. The enchiladas were excellent. Both the red and green sauces were flavorful with good heat.

Haven’t been here for at least 7 years and I think I’ll be fine if I don’t return for another 7.
When we walked in our noses were greeted by a strange smell which I was able to pinpoint as old fryer oil… Not a good sign. We were seated near the back which is quite dark, making it difficult to see clearly. I mean I can understand mood lighting but eh this didn’t really seem like that, it was just dark. However, we did have a friendly and attentive server which made things a bit better.
Chips and salsa aren’t free (THREE DOLLARS?!) so we skipped that. I ordered the green chili stew, and my parents had the enchilada trio and the Gazpacho combo. The chili was actually not bad; there was a good mix of veggies and it had a nice kick. Unfortunately they didn’t peel the green chilis so there was a bunch of chili skin in the stew :(The enchiladas are tiny (my dad said they were more like taquitos) but the flavor was so-​so. Overall I was kind of surprised at how small the plates were, considering the descriptions made the meal sound massive.
They end the meal here with free sopapillas, which I was looking forward to, but unfortunately I couldn’t taste anything but old oil when I bit into the fried bread :(Props for providing Honeyville honey on the table, but it couldn’t cover up the bad taste.

First, let me preface by saying I didn’t actually eat there. Had we received any resemblance of customer service at the front door, this review may have been a little different.
While on vacation, my family thought it would be a good idea to try this place after a long day of fun. I have a big family of 4 kids and I know they can be a little loud so I try to check the place out first before I ask for a table. This place seemed family friendly at the door until I encountered the hostess.
The hostess was whispering and giggling to a staff member she was looking for a table for 6 for «screaming kids». Normally, I would have asked to speak to her manager but he was giggling right there with her.
I told them not to worry about our table and I left and went to a restaurant down the street instead. The fact that management encourages this behavior makes me think that kids aren’t welcome. I hope the owner and other vacationers read Unilocal reviews.
Everything else in Durango has been awesome so far!

I’m from Texas and I came to a Mexican food restaurant in Colorado. So there’s that.
$ 3 for chips and salsa? Beef fajitas were average (rice & beans were pretty bad).
Service was so so.
Frozen Margarita tasted more like a piña colada than a margarita…
Sorry.

Stopped in twice in one night. First for dinner… they didn’t even speak to us about sitting down because they saw a large group walk through the door and walked away. Stopped in for a margarita on our way back from dinner and same thing… saw us walk in and bartender walked to the back. I counted 30 seconds and the bartender and hostess never approaches us. So we will not return.

If you are from Texas, save yourself some headache and go somewhere else. Can’t remember the time I had food worse than that.
