I’ve been meaning to go to the first McDonald’s ever since I lived in the Inland Empire a number of years ago and finally got to go recently during a road trip from southern to northern California. Well, they have a nice little museum and they have an old fashioned-looking area where you purchase food – pretty much a walk-up counter on the sidewalk. The dining room is to the right of this area. In general, it’s not a nice well-kept area where it’s not unusual to see bums chillin’ out. There are signs posted up that talk about how different food items were priced back then and now(inflation). They also have some Big Mac deal(that I think is all the time) since it’s the original McDonald’s. Do you need to go out of your way to visit this joint? Not more than a 20 minute drive unless it’s on the way when you’re going somewhere.

Food and service was fine. A historical McDonald’s…stop by and see what they were like in the old days.

I usually wouldn’t leave a review at a franchise place like McDonald’s but I did because this is probably the nicest cleanest I’ve ever been too. Staff is friendly. They bring you your food make sure everything is good when they pass by. They have and area for kids to play.

Its the golden arch with Speedee the crazy-eyed mascot! I had to show the kid what McDonalds used to look like before they started catering to people in cars. Yep walk-up windows only and if you’re planning on eating there, do not eat on a freezing night like I did since the seating is basically outdoor. Sure you’re sheltered from rain, but winds? Nope. Bundle up. Food is basic McDonalds food without most of the newer menu offerings. It all tastes the same but you do get to see some nostalgic McDonalds swag that has been given out through the years as well as those much cooler styrofoam clamshells that the food used to be housed in their ‘museum’. They need to bring back the original Ronald McDonald! That guy was DIY awesome!

I hate to dog a historical landmark so please let me explain. First of all, I hate McDonald’s as a whole-the franchise. Food is gross, service usually sucks, they are everywhere killing Americans one putty patty at a time. Ugh! I just hate it. So this morning, went to the«Old McDonalds» for a quick breakfast NOTFORME, but for my husband. Ordered at 10:40am. The Asian manager tells me I can’t get a hash brown because it’s lunch time, but I can get a small fry. Lunch time at 10:30am is ridiculous. Fake apple pies that are not freshly fried. Very limited food and drink menu. No egg white delight. Blah. I just hated it. Also, this particular McDonalds is very expensive, more expensive than any other around here. I hope I don’t have to go back.

The City of Downey is famous for having the oldest McDonald’s restaurant still in operation, here at the corner of Florence Avenue and Lakewood Boulevard. * The only other early McDonalds still operating in California(built in 1960) is located at 2434 Almaden Road in San Jose. Downey is also famous for being the home of entertainers, Karen and Richard Carpenter. This Downey McDonald’s restaurant opened on August 18, 1953, franchised by Richard and Maurice McDonald. Nowadays it still has the two original 30-foot Golden Arches and a 60-foot neon sign of «Speedee the Chef», the original McDonald’s mascot(added in 1959.) I like Speedee better than Ronald McDonald, who never did it for me. Too dorky I think. The Downey restaurant was closed in 1994 due to damage from the Northridge Earthquake, and low sales from lack of a drive-thru window or indoor seating. However, after being listed on the National Trust for Historic Places, it was renovated and reopened. There is now an adjoining gift shop and museum. McDonalds History In 1937, the first McDonalds restaurant was opened adjacent to the Monrovia Airport, and focused on cooking BBQ. In 1940, the small octagonal building, informally called«The Airdrome», was later moved to 1398 North E Street in San Bernardino. In 1948, the building was renovated into a walk-up hamburger stand that sold burgers, potato chips, and orange juice. In the next year, the menu added french fries and Coca-Cola. The assembly-line food preparation principle sold hamburgers at a profit for 15 cents, which was half the price of a sit-down restaurant. This very successful process was franchised in 1953 and now has some 30,000 locations worldwide. The McDonalds company was purchased by Ray Kroc in 1961, who started the McDonald’s Systems, Inc., which later became McDonald’s Corporation. The restaurants were then modernized. However, the Downey restaurant remained intact as it was part of a prior franchise. In 1990, the Downey restaurant was acquired by McDonald’s Corporation, when it was the only remaining McDonald’s that was independent of the chain.

I love McDonalds, so I had to come here while on vacation in LA. Though not the first location, it’s the oldest operating McDonald’s.(Either the 3rd or 4th location) Neighborhood seems pretty nice, and there’s plenty of parking here. Friendly staff. The adjacent museum is small, but very cool and informative. They’ve got plenty of neat Ray Kroc items. Some write-ups mention a gift shop, but there is no gift shop at this location. The museum has a semi-outdoor seating area(don’t feed the pigeons). Must get the original fried apple pie. Since I live on the other side of the country, I’m really going to miss that apple pie. I took plenty of photos in the museum and of the Speedee sign. I wish I could’ve stayed longer, in fact. Hopefully this location stays as is forever.

This McDonald’s was pretty cool. The museum was probably the only interesting about this place. The experience left much to be desired thought. The cashiers were a little rude. Food was standard McDonald’s so don’t expect fine dining. For a McDonald’s probably one of the better ones simply for the look. Oh and the bathrooms were disgusting when I was there.

Pros: it’s a nostalgic McDonald’s that also has a museum Cons: –poor service(cashiers look like they hate their job, no please or thank you, etc. I’m big when it comes to hospitality, even if it’s fast food. It’s not hard to be nice, and I’ve had similar experiences with different cashiers here) –no drive through –this McDonald’s does not participate in specials that you see on the commercials –no dollar menu? While other McDonald’s has their spicey chicken sandwich for $ 0.99, it is $ 1.29 here I think this place is great if you’re a tourist, but if you’re local, don’t bother. There’s a McDonald’s on Firestone Blvd and Pangborn(near woodruff) that’s a «regular» one that has nice people willing to take your order.

MacDonald’s is a MacDonald’s anywhere you go. Of course, unless you’re in Asia and abroad where they go the extra 100 miles to make MacDonald’s something spectacular. Anyways, if you’re in California – this is THEONLY Mickey D’s that serves FRIEDAPPLEPIES. For the peeps out there who remember the words on the side of the green or red box: «Caution: Filling Hot!!»… well, all I can say is, «Why yes, these are ASADVERTISED!» So worth it. So there!!! The only other place I go for my fried pies is in Hawaii and well, it’s not in the budget today. BUT, driving to Downey for these babies is. If anything, enjoy these tasty nuggets and reminisce(or discover) what made McD’s so awesome at one point. :)

So… say you’re driving down the road and you come to a fork. You can go left or right, you choose left. Drive down it and by the end, you crash. You are beat to hell and in need of serious repair. A year or so, maybe less, goes by and you fix the car. You start driving again, cruising, enjoying life, the car, the life it brings… when you come up to that road again with the fork in it. You choose to go left again, by the end of that road you and your car are more broken and beat than the first time. This trip takes years to recover, but you do, and eventually you are driving again. Then you come to that fork in the road again, well, you can go right, down the road less traveled by you, or never, or you can go left. Going left down the same road that broke you twice. I bet you go left. I did. And still will. She is my left turn, my McDonalds, my bad decision, that I make everytime.

Saw this McDonald’s on some TLC show and thought I’d come upon the holy grail because they still serve the fried apple pies. Who told McDonald’s that they need to control my weight and bake my pies! Anywhoo, I jump into my car and hit the 5 freeway ready to relive a bit of my childhood, before the evil empire started selling pink paste as chicken and mystery meat as a burger. I go to the window all ready for delicious, greasy apple pies good enough to stick a straw into and slurp like a shake only to see a sign that read«due to the recent enormous interest in our fried apple pies we are all out and apologize for the inconvenience» or some such nonsense. I DROVEALLTHEWAYTODOWNEYTOLEAVEEMPTYHANDED!!! For that they get two stars and to boot there were only 4 other people there and the service was slow as molasses going up hill in the winter. Damn you Ronald!

McDonald’s makes me happy. I don’t care what other people say. I don’t care if it’s unhealthy. I love me some MickeyDs, especially if you’re eating it at the Historic Speedee McDonald’s. It’s the oldest running McDonald’s in the world! How cool is that??? I always get a bit nostalgic eating their food. Brought me back to my years in elementary school when I would save money just so I can go to McDonalds on the weekends to buy french fries and ice cream. Their soft serve ice cream on a waffle cone and french fries were still amaaaaazing!!! Ice cream was ridiculously creamy, smooth and luscious, and french fries were still the best, ever! Fries+ Ice cream = match made in heaven, oh yeah! The location is awesome too. I love how they kept the the original arches, walkup windows, outdoor seating area, and they also have small museum showcasing all kinds McDonald’s facts and memorabilia. It’s definitely a fun place to take your family and friends. I took away one star because the outdoor seating area was dusty and you’re eating with pigeons lol. Birds were walking under my table waiting for me to drop my food. I guess it was inevitable since it’s outside. But the restroom was clean though so that’s a good thing! Oh and before I forget, they serve FRIEDAPPLEPIE!!! Not baked, but fried OMG! ^_^

«I don’t read the script. The script reads me.» — Kirk Lazarus(Played by Robert Downey, Jr.), «Tropic Thunder» «Being an actor’s no different than being a rugby player or a construction worker, save for the fact that my tools are the mechanisms that trigger human emotion.» — Kirk Lazarus(Played by Robert Downey, Jr.), «Tropic Thunder» Now I have a friend who blows into town every few months. A brilliant and beautiful Frenchwoman who based on her travels(Europe/Middle East/Mexico/Asia), I have always assumed was a Secret Agent. Trying to pass herself off as an «academic researcher», I pictured her taking out the bad guys, maybe even doing it Sydney Bristow/Alias style, as with her height she carries a rather imposing presence in heels or platform shoes. So when she blows in to town and wants to see the oldest operating McDonalds, and she is packing a BMW coupe with I’m certain spy gadgets that will eliminate road rage yahoos likety-split, who am I to say no to that? Mama did not raise me stupid plus I didn’t want to end up as one of the«disappeareds» or end up seeing blackness with a bullet in the brain a la Tony Soprano(and people, it was as obvious as daylight, he was killed in that final episode. Geez). Now this McDonald’s is Downey’s most famous tourist attraction(you were wondering how I was folding in those quotes, weren’t you?). And the coolest part for me was wandering a bit through the small museum. Growing up in S. Cal you forget how much McDonald’s permeated the culture back then. They had these collection of glasses I remember collecting(Oh, Hamburgler; took me forever to acquire you!) plus a few other toys I remember playing with. A real trip down memory lane indeed. The only thing missing was this plastic play set I had when I as mini-me’s age, I think it was Playmobile and you could be customer or worker :) And here is a fun fact that always blows mini-me away: when I started working at McDonalds my wage was a robust $ 3.35 an hour :) The neon sign out front is pretty cool to see, along with the old fashioned truck, and I’m happy to say that the food still sucks ;) The ice cream cone I had was all ice and no cream. Terrible. But three stars for the fun and the memory trip. There are worse things to do then go on a spontaneous Friday night road trip with a striking French spy ;)
