Happened to be in the area and thought I would give it a try based on Unilocal reviews. Major disappointment, ordered a macchiato and the espresso was bitter and burnt. This place makes Starbucks espresso look like a café in Italy .my guess its proximity to the T station keeps it on business

Is it really closed on Sundays? Is it? Really? Well, I guess that decides it. I won’t be trying this place, being new to the neighborhood. Even though there isn’t anything else good nearby. Jeez, it sucks living in Dot and disliking Dunkins.

Great coffee and friendly staff, they roast the beans right on location. I’ve been coming here for a year and the prices are the same as DD but the coffee is much better.

I work remotely, and since moving to Dorchester last Fall I’ve been trying to find a coffee shop to hang out sometimes. This is the only spot I’ve found that has reliable WiFi, ample seating, and that actually uses their A/C.

I’ve only had the cappuccino here, between the downtown location & this one I’ve ordered quite a few. I found them to be smooth & expertly made. Served, if not always with a smile, at least without an attitude. I’ll pick a local coffehouse over the big chains anyday and Flat Black is locally one of the best.

People definitely don’t know how to drink coffee because this place shouldn’t be getting the raves it has been getting. I’ve been here a couple of times and service has been slow each time, especially when there is no one else in the café. I went recently to kill time because I had 12 minutes before the next train left and when I got to the train station, I only had 2 minutes left. A couple of days ago was the second time I had ordered a hot chai latte from Flat Black. Both times my drinks weren’t hot and the chai was lacking so much of the spice that a chai latte should have. I would blame this on the fact that the barista was too focused on figuring out the order after mine(because the cashier wasn’t very clear) but since the poor quality was consistent, I don’t have an excuse for them. For $ 4 for a small cup, this was such a rip off. I’m usually a huge proponent of bougie coffee but save your money and go across the street to Dunkin’ Donuts.

By far the worst chai I have ever had. Water with a splash of milk. The pumpkin bread wasn’t much better.

Iced flat white! I love this place! Pricy? A little. BUT worth it, if you’re a true coffee lover what’s a extra couple of buck? I have yet to try other things on the menu because I’m still stuck on the iced flat white. Went with my 8 year old daughter once and they offered to make her an iced hot chocolate which she loved! I’ve been going to the Flat black in lower mills, which is my favorite, because is cozy and close to my house lol. The staff is super friendly and always helpful always making sure to ask about my milk preference, because I sometimes forget. I also love that they have liquid sugar! The location on Dorchester ave is also nice and the staff is friendly as well.

Ordered a small latte, was up sold a flat white which I normally wouldn’t go for but yeah. The shots were under extracted and I didn’t get much other than a cup of alkaloidal milk. I wanted to go back and say something but I was in a rush, and 748 million people don’t have access to clean drinking water so my coffee problems become an oversight. Right when I was handed my drink, the barista turned around and said«I need to dial in, my shots are pulling short.» I have no problem waiting an extra two or three minutes for my $ 5 coffee to ensure the highest quality if I’m just told beforehand. Some people are more patient than others and asking if you can dial in is just fine! Granted it’s no ones fault directly as Boston is very quick paced and most people don’t care about the quality of their espresso, let alone what properly pulled shots should taste like. Went back a second time, asked what they were pulling for espresso after ordering a small latte and banana bread. The same manager(?) was nice, very knowledgeable about the product, regions of origin, and flavor notes. The second drink was better than the first but it was still not blowing me away. The craft coffee scene in Boston is a little slow compared to most other regions of America/the world so I understand that most baristas will be newer or still honing their craft. I’ll try this place again in a few months!

Location: Lower Mills Dorchester: It’s true, I am a fan. I’m an espresso/milk drinker, and I really enjoy the flavor of this coffee. It is very consistent as well, though I think that sometimes the beans change in the espresso that is bought by the pound — not sure about what is served daily. These drinks are on the pricey side, but I do appreciate the local aspect and the free trade aspect of the product, I will pay to support that. Could anything change? Why yes, they could open earlier than 6:30 am — morning coffee for the early risers! I would love it if the chocolate syrup used was actually a cocoa based syrup, I’m not sure if it is or not. Biggest change that I would like to see is a customer loyalty program. That’s all!

Very good coffee. Decent place to get work done(one location more than the other but still…). It’s my local go-to for a place to just sit and get something done on a Saturday morning. And the people that work there are ALWAYS nice. Not coffee snobs like so many other places. Seriously, more indie coffee shops should be like them.

I must say that I have been disappointed in this Flat Black location. Every time I get an espresso based drink it is made too sweet. Even when I ask them to lighten up on the chocolate(mocha) it still ends up way too sweet. As pastries go, forget about it. Flat Black is horrible when it comes to their pastry selection, which forces me to go to nasty dunkin for a muffin. That should tell you something, that I have to go to dunkin for better pastries. Do yourself a favor and try the Lower Mills location, it’s always been very good in my experience. However, the pastry issue is the same here.

I try to make my own coffee at home most of the time and only ventured out to Flat Black because, having just moved to the area, I have a very empty house. I was amazed. I’d love to try one of the range of seasonal flavored lattes, but just a good ol’ americano with some half and half was the best coffee I can remember ever having. The baristas made excellent small talk and had such a great rapport with each other that I wanted to be their friends. The location is sort of oddly IN a bank, but somehow that added to the charm. So thrilled to have found this place.

Flat Black Coffee continues to be a star in service and coffee. I tried the Raspberry Truffle Latte, a specialty recommended to me by the servers, and it definitely did not disappoint. The servers and baristas are friendly and they seem to remember their regulars, which is a plus for me in my books. When I think of coffee in Dorchester, I will always think of Flat Black Coffee.

Bar none the best cup of coffee in Dorchester. Period Add free wifi and tasty pastries what else do you need to know? Staff is nice and not the usual jaded baristas you get in a lot of coffee shops They have my favorite kind of Bagel from Izzy’s in Somerville. Do yourself a favor and get a Kitchen Sink cookie to go with your coffee. You can thank me later. ;] Lack of Sunday hours is the only complaint i have.

Flat Black by Ashmont in Dorchester has a great location ideal for train riders or local residents, However… I read some reviews about the hours and was shocked to experience one of the worst coffee café experiences ever. I just bought a coffee and sat down with my laptop when after about 3−4mins the internet went down. So I informed the gentleman behind the counter with the anticipation that he would rectify the problem when he surprisingly said to me «he’s not really an IT guy» and said he didn’t know what to do about it. So I asked him if he had experienced this before and he rudely said yes«it’s been down four 4 days in the past so it could possibly take that long» What??? I was shocked at how dismissive he was and the fact that he basically shrugged his shoulders when I just gave him money in exchange for service. Now here for the best part; Then he said we’re closing in 15 mins anyway and to try the Flat Black in Lower Mills. Mind you it was just after 1:00pm during the weekday!!! After he said that I then realize the internet was probably disconnected to help clear out the place on a random weekday afternoon. Good coffee but definitely think twice before making any type of effort to drive to this coffee shop because they may very well be closed.

This place is becoming a favorite of mine. Located steps away from the Ashmont Station, I’ve treated myself a couple of times. I visited the Lower Mills location a couple of weeks ago and found«my» coffee: a flat white. I’m a coffee rookie and really appreciate the friendly staff that answer my questions without making me feel like an idiot. Others have commented on the hours of operation, but I’m happy they’re somewhat limited otherwise I’d be in trouble!

Decent coffee. Claims to be fair trade. A much better alternative to Starbucks, which is pretty hard to find in Boston area. They also have a good selection of pastries. Nice atmosphere, relatively spacey, with free Wi-fi. The only downside is they close at 5 or 6pm.
