The design and décor of vertical is beautiful. It makes for a super cute date night spot. They have plenty of wines and cocktails to choose from. We ordered some light bites off the menu. We got the pistachio grapes and the mussels with salmon. The grapes were different and something I’ve never tried before but enjoyable. And mussels with salmon were delicious and had an excellent sauce with it, although slightly too salty. For dessert we got a fantastic crème brûlée– real vanilla bean of course. Loved it. I would return here again!

Well, I enjoyed a great Tiger’s win today and always wanted to try Vertical DETROIT. So I walked there to eat and was completed turned away by one rude lady who said we have table # 5 but we have too many reservations(mind you no one was waiting there). The kind hostess net to her said sit them on 5. She refused and then turned us away. I thought that this classy place would treat there own Michigander with kindness. Never going back. Poor host service.

This place is absolutely amazing. Customer service here goes above and beyond. The moment we walked in, it felt like we were in someone’s home, the waitstaff received us in such a warm way. I ordered the New York Strip steak(cooked to perfection, might I add) and I casually mentioned in passing that I would like some steak sauce and the owner of the restaurant spent a good ten minutes searching for it for me. That really left an impression on me. The waiter recommended a phenomenal wine, Mas La Plana, and we killed about two bottles of it. It was easily the best wine I’ve ever had. Not too crowded on a Sunday, extensive wine list, outstanding customer service. I would recommend this place to everyone I know.

This restaurant was way more than I expected. We had amazing service. They have a great wine list. The menu has something for everyone. Small plates is my favorite way to eat these days and try the menu.

Our experience at Vertical was totally wonderful, from start to finish. We arrived on a very busy night, and there was a mix up with our reservation. They sorted it out instantly, with no hassle. Walking in, the atmosphere, and variety of tables was very cool. High larger tables, booths tucked into corners, traditional tables. All of these variations made for an interior that has a ton of character. It is a very long narrow space, and bar is tucked in the back. They were short a server that night, but service was still top notch. We sampled 3 – 4 appetizers, and 3 – 4 small plate«main courses» and all were wonderful. They have over 70 wines by the glass, over 600 bottles, plus a full bar. They offer tasting flights, and many other options. I cannot recommend Vertical highly enough, and we will definitely return.

Worth the wait! I have stopped in several times, but there was always a long wait that my friends were not interested in. This time around I had a friend that was passing by the restaurant, put in our name in advance. This is the way to go. We put our names down for 8:30p.m. and when we arrived we were seated immediately by the greater. They were still on a wait and the greater told me for a two top they were still expecting about a 45 minute wait. We were sat in the very far back of the restaurant by the bar so our servers were both of the bartenders. They did a fabulous job working together and making sure we didn’t need anything. As to be expected they had an extensive wine list both by the bottle or by the glass. I started with a red bordeaux for around $ 14 a glass, I believe, and ordered the fried olives and mussels. The fried olives are excellent. Paired well with my wine as well as my friend’s dirty martini(duh). The olives are lightly fried and stuffed with blue cheese and served in a martini glass. so good! My friend ordered one of their specials, the NY Strip, and I ordered the Pork Tenderloin. I was torn between the tuna or pork and the server recommended the pork and I am so glad he did! It has a coffee dusting around the edges and who would have thought the coffee taste and tenderloin paired excellent together.(Side not I’m not a coffee drinker either). The coffee taste wasn’t too strong and also went well with Shallot Jam served with the meat and Parsnip Purée(made much like mash potatoes but with the root vegetable parsnips instead or a potato). The meat was cooked to perfection. Tender, flavorful and reasonably priced. I also tried my friends steak, which was tender and juicy as well. While finishing my meal I ordered a wine from Italy, Verso Rosso di Salento. This was only $ 9 and excellent, full bodied and luscious, but then again you can’t go wrong with wine from Italy. There’s not one poor thing I can say about this establishment.

Second visit was even better then the first. Not only the food, but the service. Met some friends for dinner. First went to the bar and Tera made an awesome old fashioned. Then sat down and Ryan was our server. Very great with suggestions, very knowledgable of drinks and dinner. Very nice dinner experience. Thank you Ryan and Tera for the great service.

I Unilocaled a restaurant in Detroit and this one came with great reviews, so I was super excited to try it! The place did not disappoint. I felt like I was at a winery in San Francisco, so cute! Wine bottles align the walls along with beautiful wooden tables. The place itself is made to look like you’re inside a wine cellar. We walked in around 8pm on a Wednesday and was told a table would be available in 20 – 30 minute and we could take a seat at the bar until we were called. You have to walk through the restaurant to get to the bar area which seats 10 people or so. The wine by the glass menu is decent, 8 or so wines by the glass. Our bartender, Tara, was super attentive and very friendly. The owner also came over and introduced himself and said hello. The guys I was with sold wine from Australia so they wanted to chat with him for a bit. We tried a few different items including: mussels which were exceptional, I highly recommend them, the tomato cream sauce with pieces of tomatoes in it was amazing. Luckily it came with pieces of toasted bread because I literally licked the bowl after we finished the mussels; tuna crudo: yum, came with a few pieces of toasted baguette. My only complaint was that it was pretty small and they gave you 4 – 5 pieces of bread with it(which I used for the sauce with the mussels!), scallops: 3 – 4 scallops in a creamy sauce with bacon on top; & surf and turf sashimi, definitely their signature dish. It’s 2 pieces of raw beef tenderloin and two pieces of raw tuna that comes with a little fire to cook the meat as long as you’d like and 4 sauces to dip in(think fondue restaurant). Loved it. Eventually the host came over to tell us our table was ready, but we stayed at the bar. One itty bitty minor complaint, they totally need an espresso maker. They had coffee, but they really need espresso, especially to bring together the foodie vibe and the European feel.

My husband and I came here tonight to try something new for our anniversary. This place had a nice atmosphere, and was perfect for what we were looking for. Excellent if you’re into wine(not my thing). The menu changes with the seasons, and had something for everyone. I mean, I wouldn’t bring kids, but everyone adult. I’m not sure if they have a kids menu. We started off with the Grapes appetizer. They are grapes covered in brie with pistachio stuck to them and a wine reduction on the plate. They were good! My husband ordered the Amish Chicken, which came with a stack of thin sliced, seasoned potatoes in a pie shape, and spinach. ALL of his food was very good. The chicken was flavorful all the way through, and extremely moist. I ordered the Duck Confit. It had a Thai honey, lavender, chilli sauce. It was served with quinoa and fresh green beans. I really enjoyed it. The flavor of my dish was unique, and delicious. We finished with the Poached Pear for dessert. If you’re not into something heavy, or overly sweet, this is for you! It had anise, some kind of orange sauce(just drizzled around the plate), and whipped mascarpone on the side. So refreshing and enjoyable after a meal. We will definitely be coming back, and soon, because I have to try their salmon dish!

Although it was a little small, I think it had a great atmosphere, the prices aren’t too bad, the duck in Thai chilli sauce was pretty good. The dj played a nice mixture of music as well. Definitely would go back again

Very fine dinning. I felt a little undress but it’s a great intimate environment with in house DJ. They have a selection of over 500 wines. Some great appetizers would be the muscles they’re delectable we also tried the grapes wrapped in cheese and pistachio nuts which were pretty good the duck fries were slightly basic a little cold. For my entrée we tried a variety of things from the herb chicken to the vertical burger to the steak and cheese. The foods to die for

This place was incredible! We had been looking forward to going for a long time and it did not disappoint! We were immediately greeted by a friendly hostess who took our coats, then ushered to a lovely table next to the bar. Our server, Karl, is the best! You need to request him when you go, he’s awesome. Recommended an amazing wine, then ordered the charcuterie plate which was delicious and HUGE! We also ordered the duck fat fries, pâté and the butternut squash, all which were top notch, beautiful and delicious! The owner came over and greeted us personally and thanked us for coming in, which was very special. The ambiance, service, even the music was top notch! Can’t wait to go back!

I thought this was a wine bar. Turns out that it’s a full-fledged restaurant with a small bar. My wife and I came here after dinner for some drinks. We were walked through a long stretch of crowded restaurant to reach the small and cramped bar area. We managed to snag some seats at the bar pretty quickly. But this initial victory was hampered by the large crowd that came in soon afterwards and hovered over us the entire time waiting for us to leave so they could take our seats. They have a large selection of wine. One of the glasses we got was good but neither of us were a fan of the second. They do have a nice selection of desserts as well. We were very satisfied with that portion of our experience. Overall, it was way too crowded for comfort. The wine selection was good, but I’ve seen better. And the dessert was spot on. I cannot speak to the food, as we did not eat here.

The perfect bar, the perfect bartender Karl. I was there a few nights ago and was taken care of and felt like I was the only one there even though it was crowded. Jim was even wandering around as if he was family, fitting in perfectly and making sure everyone was taken care of. I’ve never felt more welcome. Seriously the best service and the most amazing service. I can’t even describe how amazing the mussels and the pork were. They were to a T with their wine selections and made me feel like I had known them forever, instead of just a few moments. I will definitely be coming here more often. Thank you to Jim and Karl for making everything so amazing and fantastic. Fantastic staff, amazing food and an incredible atmosphere. I cannot wait to come back.

This is a great addition to the continually growing Detroit restaurant scene. I went with two friends on Valentine’s Day and it was quite busy but we were able to get a table without waiting. Karl was our server and was fantastic! Super accommodating, recommended a great sauvignon blanc for us, and other good food recommendations. Thanks! The menu is great for sharing a bunch of different things. We got the grapes, butternut squash, charcuterie and cheese, tuna crudo, and honey lavender thai chili duck. I’d skip the grapes next time, they just didn’t seem to pack a huge flavor for me and it left me feeling underwhelmed. Butternut squash was a delight. The duck was ducking amazing(autocorrect or on purpose, I’ll never tell ha). The charcuterie and cheese board was impressive too and probably will become a staple for me when I’m here.

I came here on the weekend when the auto show was going on so everywhere in Detroit was packed! The wait was 2 hours for 3 people but luckily we found a seat at the bar after 30 minutes where we can order food and drinks. The ambiance and décor here is very nice. The waiters and bartenders were also very nice. We didn’t order much. The grapes were ok. I wasn’t sure what the hype about them was. The

I went here with a group of girlfriends for a holiday party and had a pretty good experience. I knocked off a star because of our table. They sat our group — a part of six at a eight top community-dining style with two strangers at the end. We were very close to these strangers. The second group of strangers, a couple on a date night ordered some entrée that you cook yourself at the table and the smell was so overpowering, we left short of what we would of. Also, our server kept pouring wine in front of me while I wasn’t drinking, didn’t order the wine and then handed me the bill at the end for the bottle. You would expect at a fine dining establishment, that this is big no-no. Also, my friend was missing an appetizer and it came at the end of the meal. The four stars came from the food itself. Keep in mind, that this is definitely a splurge night out. It would be great for a romantic evening or girl’s night out. I had the following the grapes with brie, pistachio, red wine gastrique and pistachio tuille. This was absolutely delicious and perfect for sharing. I also shared the butternut squash with tiny greens, candied walnut, brown butter and parmesean sage caviar. This was also delicious and the butternut squash was firm. I then had the roasted beet salad with haricot vert, chevre, sunflower seeds which came with a cumin coriander spiced yogurt. This was a very large plates of beets and I was impressed with the amount. For my «entrée» since I had already split a few plates, I had the scallops with corn coulis, bacon lardons, bacon powder, pea tendrils and fig gastrique. They were also large in size and that was appreciated. I would be back for the food!

We came here for appetizers and drinks and my only complaint is that we already had dinner reservations somewhere else! The décor was absolutely spectacular, a mix of both welcoming and trendy. Even the bathrooms were decorated in a modern but clean motif. To start we had the olives(fried with curried honey), then the assorted pâté appetizers. The pâté was cool because for $ 12 you get 2 huge pieces of different pâté’s. We also had the grilled focaccia and mozzarella which was seasoned perfectly. The wine and drink options were great, we had a New Zealand sauvignon blanc and the flavor was great. Above the food the service was excellent. They took out coats upon arrival and we received frequent attention and advice from or waiter who was both knowledgable and accommodating.

Came here on a weeknight for dinner. Loved the artsy chic atmosphere. The tables are situated very close together, I would have rather sat at the bar. Our waitress was great, well informed and attentive. To start, the wine list is one of the largest I’ve seen and the staff certainly seems to have a good knowledge to make excellent recommendations/pairings. Started off with mussels and pâté– delicious. For entrée I had the amish chicken(loved! even the secondary items on the dish tasted were delish).

To begin the wine list for anyone who knows anything about wine is beyond impressive. They carry wines you may never see again in your lifetime or have the pleasure to enjoy. Not only is the wine impressive but any martini cocktail ordered from the bar will come out perfectly balanced. The service is impeccable without being overbearing. The chef has created a small creative menu aimed to please a wine drinkers palette. The setting is romantic. I highly recommend this restaurant as it is currently one of the top 3 in Detroit.
