China Chef

I had a rough night last night! Came home from work did not eat at all. This morning I woke up and was like «Chinese sounds so good right now!» So I looked up Chinese delivery. This was the only place open! I have work at 1:30 and usually get ready around 11:30ish. My food came quicker than I expected. It was soo good. The employees were so kind and nice on the phone. I didn’t know the food was gonna be this good!

Hands down the best Chinese place in Iowa! I moved away from China chef and was not able to get delivery and I would drive from grimes, IA to get it! Everything you get is freshly prepared down to the egg rolls each being freshly fried you order them! Great lunch deals and their hot and sour soup is to die for! This is definitely authentic American Chinese!

The atmosphere leaves a bit to be desired, but our food and the service was excellent! Lunch was a bargain at $ 6.95, and the waiter ensured that our water glasses were never empty. On our visit, my Orange Chicken was great – spicier and more flavorful than the sticky sweet Panda Express junk most of us are used to. Highly recommended. Other diners enjoyed the Sesame Chicken and the Garlic Chicken. Good egg drop soup and sides. I’m normally not an egg roll fan, but I loved these. If I were local, this would probably be my go to Chinese drive-​thru.

I’m from out of town so maybe they do Chinese different here but this, in my opinion was terrible. I had the sesame chicken which granted, I got it to go so it’s always going to be a little soggy but there was three times the breading to chicken and it was soggy like it’d been soaked in water and I was only five minutes away. The egg drop soup was completely loaded with black pepper so it had no flavour except for black pepper and I had an order of crab Rangoon which is my favourite and I threw half of it away because it was almost inedible. Sorry but it just was terrible for me…

This is my favorite Chinese food in Des Moines. There are never a lot of people here and I don’t know why because the food is wonderful! The service is always very helpful. I try to make myself get something new to try everytime and I have not had anything that was less than great! I love Mongolian Beef and Beef and Broccoli. Their hot and sour soup is great and I love the egg drop as well. The décor is lacking, but it’s a family-​run place and they are working hard to please. I think they do a pretty good take out and delivery business. Definitely my go-​to place for good classic Chinese food.

I guess my experience was uncommon. i got delivery and the order was wrong so when i called them they were rude and told me not to touch any of the food cause they were sending a manager to my house. (Just so you know we ordered pizza and we were cleaning up after dinner when they finally showed up) So 45 min later some kid showed up and he was complaining about working for the company «because the woman answering the phone has a boyfriend that works there and he gets all the deliveries…» It was a circus! anyways they brought me cold food the second time and refused to refund and take the food back. so we will not be ordering from them anymore.

Wow! Great reviews & did not disappoint our family! Nothing special on the outside or inside but delicious food & good service.

This place isn’t bad at all. Hubby and I love that they have a drive-​thru pick up option. The prices aren’t bad and the flavors are good. Didn’t go inside, so can’t tell you how it looks in there.
Food:
Mongolian Beef — ³⁄₅ pretty good, no complaints. Still not my go-​to for this dish but Hubby liked it!
Empress Chicken — ³⁄₅ the Flavors are good, but it would probably taste better if you eat in because they chicken was soggy from the sauce. But that’s how it is with all the deep-​fried stir-​fry dishes.
All in all, if we do eat here again, I wouldn’t mind ordering these dishes again!

One of our favorites for fresh fast delivery Chinese. My son loves Chix fried rice, egg rolls and crab Rangoon. I get moo goo gai pan, sesame chix, sweet and sour chix, garlic Chix and cashew Chix. Plus you can pick up at drive thru for call in orders.

What a pleasant surprise! I’m new to living in Des Moines and have had some mediocre Chinese delivery experiences so far, but China Chef was a real treat. Ordered dinner for my fiancée, brother, and I tonight and our food was wonderful. I had the Mongolian Beef and would highly recommend it. Presentation is about what you would expect from typical delivery food, but the flavor far surpasses it. Delivery took a little longer than quoted but was well worth the wait. We will definitely be ordering again!

I read all these good reviews about their take-​out, so I decided to try it. I called and was immediately put on hold, which is typically not a big deal. Then once they were back on, I told them I’d like to place an order for delivery. They said the wait time was about an hour and a half. I still said that was fine since I wasn’t too hungry yet. Then when I told him my address, he informed me that they did not deliver there. I said, «Oh. Okay. Where do you deliver then?» and then they hung up on me. I looked it up on the map and it told me they are about 10 minutes away from where I live. I was disappointed that they had such bad customer service. To not deliver to me is one thing, but to hang up? That’s quite another.

Everything is delicious, but somewhat luke warm. I’m a sucker for Chinese and this was overall good if your expectations aren’t too high.

Awesome for lunch. Recommend getting the empress chicken extra spicy… it is a great lunch special with soup, egg roll and rice for under $ 6.

We have been getting take out from here for about a year or so, we love it. My favorite is their kung bao beef. Today was the first time I’ve dined in. Small cozy place and the service was wonderful. Best chinese place on the south side!

Love this place! The only GOOD delivery Chinese food in Des Moines as far as my family is concerned! Priced well and great portion sizes. Occasionally it is difficult to understand person answering the phone but the orders are always correct, hot, fresh and tasty!

Another lazy day, had my food brought to work from China Chef. I did not get to see what the inside of the place looks like so I’ll have to do an update if I ever decide to eat in. I was not expecting much because they appeared to be a small Chinese fast food place. I was surprised at their food quality, it was pretty good for Chinese fast food.
I got the Sesame Chicken with fried rice, crab Rangoons, egg rolls, and I think egg drop soup. Everything was flavorful and fantastic, the chicken was made well, tender and tasty. The eggroll and crab Rangoons were good, not amazing, but good. Fried rice was average and the soup was good.
I would try this place again, but it is really nothing special, I can get this food at other places that taste the same.

Been getting food delivered from here for years always good food and good service. Only place I order from for Chinese delivery.

Did not look inviting on outer of building but food was AMAZING!!! Will be hard to go to another chinese place and not compare it to the food and service!!! Very good

Fantastic food. The place looks like a hole and your vinyl table cloth may be a little sticky but the food never fails.
Hands down the best Sesame beef in town (add some veggies-it’ll blow your socks off) but everything I’ve had there has been great.
The service is always spot on and the staff is happy to change out veggies/​meats, swap a crab Rangoon for an egg roll, ect.
We were crushed when we moved and discovered we were out of their delivery zone but we make sure to drive across town frequently to get our China Chef fix.
