I came here very excited to stock up on meat and other yummy latin things. The market itself is not bad, it has a good variety of items and fresh fish and meat. They also have a cafeteria or hot food section that look unbelievable! On that day though, my husband and I bought some Tequenos(fried dough filled with cheese) and we also tried their Chicharron. We took it home and were very excited to tear it up like savages, but to our surprise those two items were beyond low quality. The chicharron is already greasy by nature, but it seemed this one was left in the oil for days, it was super greasy and nothing more than a piece of chewy skin, it did not even have any meat on it. Then the tequenos didn’t even have cheese in them, it was nothing more than a cold fried dough. Ohh we also got some homemade tortillas that were super bad. I have never had such awful tortillas in my life! I think I would come back here if I had to buy certain special items like meats, but other than that I believe I would simply pass.

Errrrrrrr don’t know how to put. Dirty and broken, that’s how I feel about that place. I can understand food a little bit expensive but at least keep the floor clean…

I’ve been to nicer grocery stores in third world countries. Smells worse than a pet store. Stay away!!!

Wow, this has got to be the worst service I’ve ever experienced in my life. Let me first start by saying the prices here are ridiculously cheap, and although they have a large selection of ethnic produce and strange cuts of meat, the quality was very poor. The vegetables were yellow and there was a terrible stench as soon as you walked through the door, not to mention a malaria epidemic going on inside. There were flies and Mosquitos buzzing everywhere from the carts, to the seafood, to all the fruits and vegetables. The reason I’m writing this review is because of the horrific experience I had at the meat department. I asked one of the store employees if they could split an item for me like they do at publix, because my brother couldn’t finish the whole thing. He said yes. Then I asked if he could slice a large piece of ribeye very thin. He replies yes, of course once again and to just get a number and ask the guy behind the counter. There was a pretty long line and about 15 minutes of risking my life to yellow fever, the guy called the number and as my brother went up to the counter, he looked at him and called the next number. Ok, hold up buddy, honest mistake but he kept ignoring us when we were trying to explain we were number 52, dammit. Maybe his cat got run over by a car that day, but he was in a ridiculously bad mood. I asked him for the favors and he said, «no, we don’t do that» in very broken English. We tried to patiently explain that the other employee informed us that they can. He once again replied us no but in a very annoyed and pissed off manner. Wait, aren’t I the one suppose to be frustrated at this point? Then he continued on to say the other employees are quote«stupid and don’t know anything» and that we were not suppose to listen to them and«stupid» for asking someone that wasn’t behind the counter. Then tried to shoo us away and called the next number. Well, stupid old me will never be returning again.

While I was very pleasantly surprised at the great prices for produce and a nice selection of seafood, I was a bit disappointed at the selection of Asian foods. Earlier reviews suggested they carried a host of Asian items and I found it to be just a lot of LaChoy. I can find that at Publix. I will definitely use Monterrey as a great source of meats, fish and Latin American and Caribbean spices.

This was my first time, but I love the meat/fish selections. Will definitely stop in there again the next time I’m in the area and rack up on Fish…

This market is an absolute favorite. There have been many a days when I have cooked a meal at home only because an evening trip to Monterrey has sparked several exciting cooking ideas. They have a wide variety of fresh vegetables, exotic fruits and a good selection of meats for very modest prices. They also have the best selection of spices I have seen at any supermarket, again at very reasonable prices. The staff is super friendly. In all, if you are looking for lots of good food at very reasonable prices, Monterrey is the place to go!

If you are looking for affordable prices and ethnic groceries, this is the place for you. I am mixed race, Japanese and Hungarian and for the life of me can’t find certain items I require at regular grocery stores. Monterrey has the groceries I need to cook the foods I am accustomed to. Moving here from NYC, and being exposed to all kinds of different cultural foods, I had such a hard time finding just Plum Sauce, until I found this grocery store. The prices are so reasonable and the staff is friendly. It’s not Publix or Whole Foods, but if it was it would be a lot more expensive. If you can get past the smell of the open fish market/butcher department, the older floors and the old school check out area, then this is the place for you. Certainly there are items there that I am not comfortable to buy, so I go to Costco or Walmart or even Publix for those items. BTW, I have never paid only 7 cents for one lime, ever, in my life, so cheap!

It’s nice to have cheaper alternatives to Publix and from what I’ve seen, Monterrey is one of the few places in the area offers that. I love that they have a variety of ethnic produce to choose — from Latin American, Caribbean and Asian, you’ll find what you need. Their produce is generally ok, though I’ve had bad luck with their tomatoes. Not sure if I’d venture and get fruits like berries, grapes, etc. I generally stick to collards, okra, peppers, corn(love their 7 for $ 1 specials!). My mom’s a huge fan of their live blue crabs as well. The prices are quite reasonable and they have frequent sales. My big gripe with this place is that it can be a bit disorganized and messy. It also has a strong pungent smell which I would attribute to the fish and meats(?) Not sure… We don’t tend to venture too much into their meat/seafood department, though my mom does like that they offer goat meat. This wouldn’t be my go-to grocery store, but it’s a good supplement for when I’m looking for more ethnic products.

No idea why anyone would go to this shopping plaza when Publix is only ½ mile away.

The fresh fruit salad is awesome and is SO much better than Publix.(Yuk.) Much less expense, too.

My local mexican restarant told me about Monterey market when I was looking for a source for hot peppers. Visited it today for the first time. I would describe it as a large hispanic/carribbean type supermarket. No frills décor but great if youre looking for specific ethnic foods. I was there to buy dried mexican peppers and they have a large selection. Didnt get time to look at everything but large produce section and place looked clean enough. Staff very helpful and I would definitely visit again.

They took over the Winn Dixie location on the corner of Linton and Congress. Apparently, They didnt really fix anything up before opening the store. The same run down carts, dirty floors, run down aisles and shelves. The store caters to the Hispanic community and has great prices for many produce items. 15 limes for $ 1, 3 bunches of cilantro for $ 1, tomatoes sometimes go for $.68 per pound, or 3 lbs of bananas for $ 1… I’ve never been able to find good potatoes though. Always rotting. Everything is hit or miss. Sometimes everything is wilting and dying. Sometimes you can’t find the basic items, and many times, the fruits are just so small and gross. But when you do find the deals, you’re amazed. They have a bakery section with hispanic desserts and a food section where they sell hot foods. I would stay away from the foods. I’ve bought completely burnt and dried empanadas, old pastries and gross mushy food. But I still go back hoping to find something interesting that day.
