A lot of the sushi rolls here are HUGE. You can’t fit the pieces into your mouth. I don’t mean this as a good thing. You’re supposed to be able to actually fit sushi roll pieces into your mouth. That’s kind of the point. They play annoyingly loud techno music here on weekends. It’s overpriced and way overrated among south Florida folk, as you can see by the numerous 5-star reviews. Overhyped to the max.

I have to admit, I only went once, and so I’m not sure I really got to experience the apparently fluctuating level of service. But I don’t know if I would care — the sushi was amazing! I went with my family, a crowd of sushi lovers. We had had a late lunch and practically had to roll in the door, which I did with the plan to eat a ‘very light dinner’. That idea went out the window when our spectacular meal arrived. I found myself trying to choose whether to eat that last roll if it meant risking vomiting all over the table. I chose to wolf it down, and I didn’t regret it! We tried the Tokyo Rock and Roll due to all the reviews mentioning it. It was good, but I couldn’t taste the eggplant. It might as well have been tempura something else. Luckily I love tempura anything. I also sampled my brother’s roll that consisted of mango, cream cheese, and eel. I have to admit I made a face while chewing on it, because the flavors were surprising. Very sweet. In the end I decided I really liked it. The star of the night was the tuna and crispy shrimp roll. It came on its own plate, a bevy of little tuna rolls topped with cooked shrimp and some kind of other deliciousness(I have no idea, it was red and juicy), which also boasted a little mountain of fried shrimp and was decorated with sweet chilli sauce. This was the roll that I sacrificed my stomach for. WOW! Probably the best sushi dinner overall I’ve had, and I’ve been to numerous well known places all over the northeast. Keep in mind that we love offbeat and wacky sushi that is unlikely to be authentic in any way, with extra sauces and unusual ingredients. I doubt that sushi in Japan often contains tempura eggplant or is topped with sweet chilli sauce. But I’d go back and eat this any day!

First of all, you gotta love a place that’ll seat you and faun over your table when you show up 15 minutes before they’re supposed to close on a Saturday night. A friend and I did just that a few weeks ago, and every staff member we encountered was more than accomodating. We were repeatedly welcomed and made to feel a little less like jackasses coming for a super-late dinner. Second, the Tokyo Rock & Roll is out-of-this-world. I know the rest of the food we got was yummy, but this is what stands out in my mind. It was a very unique combo, and very tasty. Third, the décor of Kyoto is pretty cool. It’s got that lounge-ish feel. And I’d heard about the camera over the sushi chefs so you can watch them work their magic, but at our visit, all the tvs were tuned to the NFL playoff game that was in its last quarter. All in all, this place is definitely worth another visit in my book, even if just for the Tokyo Rock & Roll — it was THAT good.

This should be a five star restaurant. The atmosphere is hip. The sushi is rumored to be good, even here. The beautiful people are here on the weekends. So why only one from me? First, don’t sit at the sushi bar on the weekend. They use it as a pick-up station over the entire length of it. This means that waiters will be leaning in on you to snatch up their catch, and argue with one of the bazillion chefs working behind the counter. It would be one thing if the wait staff and the hosts/hostesses were friendly. I guess they might be if you’re their kind of people. I think I was a bit too old and un-hip to warrant anything other than lip service. This, in Florida where they have to check to see if I’m tall enough to stand under the sign to get into most restaurants. I had to get someone to clean a spot at the sushi bar because the hosts could not be troubled with a solo. The host told me there was«no space» at 9:00pm on a Saturday night when a third of the bar was empty with dirty dishes still sitting there. One of the reasons I like sushi bars when I’m by myself is because you can sit at the bar and have a nice experience. My journey did not begin well. I probably should have eaten somewhere else on crowded Atlantic Ave. but I heard that the food was good, so I stayed. I put in an order for edamame(steamed soybeans), tuna tataki, and sunomono(sushi salad of sorts), and a drink. The drink showed up. 30 minutes later I was begging my waiter just to bring out the steamed soybeans. He was modestly helpful and they showed up about ten minutes later. It was clear that I wasn’t a priority. When the waiter detected that I wasn’t happy that I had waited nearly 40 minutes for my appetizer, he rattled the sushi chefs’ cage. They were visibly moved and did nothing. At about an hour I got my other items. The sunomono was so sloppily put together that I had one enormous stringy strand of raw cucumber instead of the usual lightly marinated bits one finds in the dish anywhere good. The seafood was coarsely cut in large chunks that would work as sashimi, but not in this dish. If I had ordered sashimi it would have been perfect. The tuna tataki had to be the worst that I’ve ever had in 25 years of eating sushi all over the world. This place is a factory with nice décor. Rude staff. Bad mojo. Lousy food that is prepared too fast by people who don’t care at super-premium prices. That tells you volumes about the owners. Go to the sushi place up Atlantic Avenue that has far better fish and 150% better service. I got suckered in by the hip thing. My bad. The only positive sign of change in this place would be «Under New Management» or «CLOSED»

I hosted my dad’s 50th birthday party in the back room of Kyoto last night and was absolutely thrilled with the party. I’ve been to Kyoto on many occasions for sushi, but had never been to the party room. My brother checked it out and said it was a nice room so I took a chance and booked a party here. The manager and waitresses could not have been more helpful. Mitch, the manager, put together an amazing menu that was delicious and affordable. The waitresses were a huge help throughout the party and all the guests commented that the service was incredible. If you are looking for a good sushi meal definitely try Kyoto, but also make sure to check out Kyoto if you are looking to throw a party for between 20 – 50 people. Thanks Kyoto for a memorable night!
