Great food but a little on the expensive side. I am bummed that they are closing on 12⁄19 for good but I am so glad I was able to go before they shut down. The bulgogi beef plate was honestly the most flavorful bulgogi I have ever had at a Korean restaurant. If you are reading this and it is not Sunday 12/20…go visit this place before it is gone!

This is a really interesting Korean fusion restaurant from the same people who founded Heirloom BBQ. It’s housed in an old thin-shelled concrete roofed Arby’s with an expansive front deck. The food has some of the same flavors found at Heirloom with several notable additions. Simply delicious.

The fried chicken wings, pork belly appetizer wraps, and bulgolgi buns are so flavorful, well-balanced, and tasty! Get some before Sobban closes December 19th!

A bunch of weidos run this place but the food is awesome. The chicken wings were amazing. Spicy, hot and delicious. We also had the pork belly appetizer although the wraps could have been bigger. The shrimp and grits were awesome. Lots and lots of it and it was all good, delicious and hot. If you like spicy food you can kick it up at the condiment bar. Delicious, different and pretty reasonably priced.

It was my first-time to visit, and I was excited! I love Korean food. I love the options at Heirloom BBQ. So I figured this place would be a home run for me. I drove in and noticed the plantings around the parking lot. I tried to figure out if i wanted to sit outside or in. So I walked in the door. A couple of staff were scattered around… but no greeting, no glance to see if I needed something. It took me a minute to figure out what to do. As others have noted, the restaurant has switched to fast-casual counter service. I went at a slow time, 8:30 pm on a Tuesday night. I would have loved to chat with the person at the register about the various options, but he just wanted to take my order and move on, though there weren’t other customers to take care of. And when it’s time for me to sign the check on the iPad, and the default setting for the tip is 18%, when no one has showed any interest in me being there, and I’m standing at a counter, it kinda rubs me the wrong way. I had the Beef Bulgogi bun and the Pork Belly Bossam. Both were interesting and good. But the staff were devoid of any personality or care. It was really weird – like a total disconnect between the interesting food and the service. I’m sure if Jiyeon were in the building it would be different, but my experience was kinda disappointing.

Alright. Let’s just get down and dirty with the reviews. I had a few friends give some great reviews, and some that gave some a-ok reviews about this place but I had to try it for myself. For one, I heard that this place had the closest wings to Bonchon. So I definitely had to get that. Two other things that stood out to me were the pork belly bun and the miso kale. Girl’s gotta get some vegetables in. — — – Sobban Chicken Wings PROS –super crispy on the outside but moist on the inside: very true to the korean style of double-frying wings –sauce was not too spicy, not too sweet but definitely had some heat: would be nice to have some sort of dairy based sauce to go with it though such as ranch or even raita –pickles were a good assortment to cut the heat as well as to break up the monotony of eating wings. CONS –none really. It’s hard to find korean-style chicken wings similar to that of the infamous Bonchon Chicken up in DC and NYC. — — – Pork Belly Bun PROS –soft and fluffy bun: came out warm even though we were sitting outside CONS –not the most moist meat but yet not completely dry either. It was just… there. too much vegetable: kimchee and green onion. I do like vegetable, but there wasn’t enough balance between the bread, meat, and pickles. — — — Miso Kale PROS –filling: they were really generous with their portions –good if you like kale: they cooked them down to the consistency of collard greens. It was definitely a nice twist on southern fare CONS –way too salty. Miso in and of itself can have a good amount of salt in it. My guess was that they cooked down the kale in salt water and then added miso on top of that. Would I go back again? Probably. The wings were pretty good. They were the closest to Bonchon which was always a great treat whenever I went to NYC or DC. I’ll try to give Sobban another try since I believe in second chances.

I had heard some great things about Sobban. I love all things Korean, so I had to check it out. Not disappointed! Shared the Korean Fried Chicken wings, Mini Bibimbop & Dumplings and Pork Belly Buns & Korean Sweet Potatoes with my wife and son. All were delicious. Pork belly buns were my favorites! Wings were nice and crispy but inside could have been cooked more. All in all great experience, we will be back!

Came here to grab a quick lunch and loved the atmosphere and setup. Nice and cozy but inside seating is limited to 2 tables and a long bar top. They have ample outside seating but it was a rainy day and a table on the inside was free. I followed them on Instagram(@sobbanatl)and knew I had to come try the amazing looking food. They have a daily special board where I selected the pork belly fried rice and a bulgogi bun. Both of these with an added sweet tea put me at around $ 17 so not the cheapest lunch but well worth it the service was amazing and the food came really fast. The bun was amazing and the meat was seasoned perfectly. The rice also had great flavor and was full of diced up jalapeños and pork belly. The also have ramen but unfortunately ran out yesterday so I will be back when it graces the menu definitely.

I stepped back into Sobban recently and a befuddled expression settled upon my face since they apparently have changed from table service to order-at-the-counter. Well then. Besides being a nod to the building’s former casual occupants, I guess that was probably a smart idea since the service from a prior visit wasn’t particularly memorable. There isn’t much seating inside now but it was pleasant enough on the patio. The funky mix of southern meets Korean grub makes for an interesting meal. Sobban is a popular joint that just recently won Best Korean from Creative Loafing readers, so be prepared to wait if you go at a prime time. I got the shrimp and rice grits last time and tried some bingsus(Korean shaved ices) too, courtesy of the chef-owner, who when she learned that our server neglected to tell us about the new bingsu choices, gave us some on the house. Chef Jiyeon is awesome. This last visit, I had six wings and the Korean melon. The wings were mammoth-sized, and six of ‘em was enough for my stomach. I was a tad apprehensive at the mention of chili in the ingredients but I was worried for nothing. I hate when honey BBQ wings are too sweet, but Sobban gets the flavor balances just right. And the chicken itself was moist and cooked well. The Korean melon was quite the wacky dish when you think about it. Take something like a cantaloupe, put yogurt on top(well, honey tofu cream), layer prosciutto on top(actually country ham), and dust flowers on for the finishing touch. Bizarre but it all works! My friend got the friend pork chop donkatsu and«gigantic» was the only word to describe it. Gigantically big and gigantically tasty. According to the website, a «sobban» is «a small ornate wooden table used for humble meals during the Lee Dynasty.» You will want to pull up a chair to this table, no doubt.

For those of you who missed the Seoul vs. Tokyo Ramen showdown this past Thursday… you REALLY missed out. Starters: Sesame green bean salad– a mix of various types of green beans, in a light sauce that does not cover up the flavor of the beans themselves. Excellent starter to prepare our appetites. KFC wings– crispy, sweet, juicy, and a tinge of spicy. Perfect. Entrees Shoyu Ramen w/chicken– This broth was clean yet so flavorful. I was savoring every spoonful of it. The slices of chicken thigh were portioned appropriately(not too much, not too little), and provided the meatiness for the dish. Bibim Ramen– Yep, basically bibimbap ramen style. It’s almost like a noodle salad, with sauce on the side. Very refreshing since there are so many different vegetables that come along with your noodles. Since we were so impressed with our entrees… we decided to stay and just order the third Ramen– the Korean«Army Stew» Ramen. Totally blown away. Typically army stew is made with cheap meats like spam– but for this dish, there was a slice of smoked/pan fried pork belly and smoked andouille sausage(with Heirloom’s trademark flavor) which provided a hint of sweetness(along with super sweet yet tart tomatoes) in the broth that made this dish the ultimate flavor bomb of the night. Crazy good I tell you. Oh, and the complementary house-made banchan(kimchi, etc) are a really nice touch too. I love how they put their own twist on their flavor– a hint of sweetness and black pepper in their kimchi. Awesome. On our way out, Cody showed us their expansive organic garden behind the restaurant. Folks, these guys go all out. This is what good food is. I wish it hadn’t been so long since we’ve been here. We’ll be back sooner than later.

This is a 4 star review for the food but unfortunately, the subpar, dishonest service rendered my Sobban experience more deserving of zero stars. I enjoyed the food at Sobban, the pork bossam was good, the deviled eggs — excellent, Korean fried chicken wings — not bad, bingsu — great. So what was wrong with the service? Symptoms include but are not limited to: Our water was never refilled. We had to ask for more water when getting the check. Those wings were a tad spicy! Server insinuated that we didn’t order enough food for our group. We didn’t see our server again after ordering. Food was brought out by someone else and we only saw her again when she dropped off the check. Server was curt, and had a gloomy expression throughout. Perhaps she was having a bad day, which I can understand as it happens to the best of us. We ended up leaving a tip of roughly 13%, which I felt was very fair given the appalling service. That was supposed to be the end of it. However, two weeks later I received an email from my credit card company, bringing to my attention the«unusually large tip» I left at Sobban and checking in to make sure that the service was indeed that exemplary. It seems somebody at Sobban very strongly believed that the service we received that day was deserving of a 35% tip, and decided to forge my signed receipt accordingly. Not to worry though, I disputed the charge and the tip was changed to a more appropriate 0%. To the owners of Sobban — your food is wonderful, and it’s a shame that there are dubious individuals in your team who do deceitful things to tarnish your good name. I sincerely hope that mine was an isolated event, and that you weed them out successfully.

I’m very impressed with this place! They serve Korean dishes with a modern twist. I like the inside of the restaurant– it’s chic/hipster with big open glass windows. On the outside there’s a nice shaded patio to enjoy the nice weather. It has a very chill vibe with people hanging out and sipping on wine. They grow many of their vegetables and herbs right outside– maybe that’s why the quality of the food tastes so good. Must haves: the bibimbap, calamari, and of course, the Korean fried chicken. We ordered a lot of food to share so we were too stuffed for dessert, but they looked delicious and pretty unique in the photos. Overall there’s good management– our waitress was super helpful and attentive. The owner is very involved with restaurant– he works with the garden, he’s always checking on everyone and is very engaged. You can tell he really cares about his customers. 5 stars for great service!

Wanna know what food tastes like when it’s cooked by a pop star from Korea? Then c’mon down to Sobban. I was drawn into this place by the interesting background of the executive chef Hyeon. This place serves a mix of Korean and southern fare but I found it to be predominantly Korean(unless their menus change every now and then?). Kimchi deviled egg — so tasty! The kimchi dominated in flavors and the crispy rice gave it a nice touch, texture wise. Smoked pork belly bossam — definite must try! The ssam and miso paste was delicious with the smoked pork belly. I do wish the pork belly was more juicy though, it appeared a bit dry. Korean fried chicken — finger licking good, crunchy, moist, tender meat all topped with a sweet chili sauce. Sobban bingsu — the best bingsu I’ve had in my life! They even made the mochi from scratch! I’ve never had Korean melon but it was delightful. Definitely another must try. My only complaint is the service, my water was never refilled and my server never checked on us. I think it’s a hit or miss because I noticed another server taking care of other tables near me and she was always attentive and smiling while my server looked miserable. Maybe she had a bad day but she shouldn’t take it out on her job…

I came here on a weekday lunch around noon. It is a pleasant walk from Emory’s Clairmont campus(except maybe in the summer). There was no wait to be seated, but it took forever for our waiter to get my party of 2. Even more annoying was that the party which arrived after us was served first, and they had more people. A quick glance at the menu looked like an adequate lunch time sized meal would cost around $ 15, which is more than I wanted to spend. Fortunately they have some decent lunch specials for $ 10, which includes an entrée and a side. Probably will not come here for dinner due to the prices. I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich, which comes with a side of sweet potato chips that have a sweet sauce drizzled on them, as well as black sesame seeds. The chips were definitely my favorite part of the meal and are worth going back for. The spicy chicken sandwich was underwhelming. It had a very spicy mayonnaise-based sauce on one side of the chicken, and then more plain mayonnaise on the other side. I enjoyed the mayo in all its glorious forms, on any and every side, but for some people this may be too much. There was also some lettuce and tomato-both fresh and delicious. Unfortunately, the spiciness was a little overwhelming and gave the sandwich a singular taste. Hopefully the other lunch specials have the same kick but with more diversity. Sobban’s layout and design is really weird. The venue has changed hands over the last couple years and it really needs a makeover. The bathrooms are outside behind the service area, sort of like the gas station next door. The inner seating area has a mix of bathroom subway tile walls juxtaposed with stone walls. Perhaps more concerning, they also serve drinks in plastic cups but grow their own veggies(but in Styrofoam pots!). There is a lot of anachronism and inconsistencies that I don’t think they want in their flavor of southern US + Korean fusion. This and the price/quality/quantity ratios are the main reasons I’m giving Sobban a 3 instead of a 4. But I will be back for more of those sweet potato chips!

It was good, but I’ll go ahead and say it: I prefer, and will crave, Heirloom Market BBQ over Sobban any day of the week. Heirloom has a special place in my heart, and I’m always ready to eat there! We came into Sobban around 2pm on a Saturday, and the place was pretty slow. We got a corner booth near the kitchen and started off with the wings. These were probably my favorite out of everything we got: good flavor, crispy, not too spicy. I hope the chefs at Heirloom Market know how to make these! My only gripe is they came in an order of 5, which is really hard to split. Seriously, use even numbers, please! Next I ordered a lunch portion of a chicken noodle soup(don’t remember the name) that was served with a side of kimchi cabbage and beef dumplings with a dipping sauce. The dumplings were easily my second favorite. Light and flavorful, and the sauce was equally good. The soup was okay, maybe 3 stars. The broth was really fishy, but looked like a beef broth; fish sauce, maybe? The vegetables in the soup were really fresh, and the noodles were some sort of brown ones. The kimchi cabbage was, well, kimchi cabbage. But, not the spiciest kimchi I’ve ever had. Fiancé ordered the fried pork chop sandwich and really liked it. His came with a side of sliced sweet potatoes covered in sesame seeds and honey. These were really good! And, his sandwich was pretty good, too, but not anything I’d go back for. Glad he ordered it instead of me! We finished with the donuts that have a pecan and either molasses or sorghum filling covered in powdered sugar. They were the perfect ending to our meal! I only had a small bite of the homemade green tea ice cream served with them. And, it was spectacular, in part because we saw the chef make it in front of us. Alas, between my dairy sensitivity and allergy to green tea, I couldn’t have more than one small bite. But, I did get all the fresh raspberries! Also, their prices are really steep. $ 1.50 for half a Deviled egg, for example. We wanted to try them, but couldn’t justify spending that much on a single serving. This comes back to the menu being built on odd numbers. I’m not sure why the menu was designed that way, but it’s clearly an oversight. Outside of the food, the service was great. Our server was patient and offered recommendations based on our preferences and cravings, and had to manage the whole dining room herself at some points. Granted, it’s a small space like Heirloom, but it can be hard to juggle multiple groups by yourself. I’m not going to say it’s not worth a shot, because it definitely is. But, next time I’m in the area, I’ll probably look for a new restaurant to try before going back to Sobban.

I decided to visit here for a weekday lunch, arriving at Sobban as soon as it opened around 11:30AM. It was fairly empty, but by the time I left around 1:30PM, the dining room was more than half-filled. The outdoor patio is great for group seating. The lunch specials were mostly 10 bucks – an awesome deal. I ordered the Chicken Kalguksu and received a side of Mandu(Korean dumplings) & Kimchi. My guest ordered a Korean-style BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich with a side of Sweet Potato Chips. The presentation for both dishes was picturesque and colorful. Concerning the Kalguksu, the noodles were very fresh, and the broth was tasty. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals! Service was very welcoming and attentive. For you Emory students, this place is very close to Clairmont Campus(I’m estimating a 10 minute walk) and a short distance from Main Campus(avoid traffic and use Houston Mill and Mason Mill Road). The portions are perfect for a light, quick, and cheap lunch! I appreciated the message they were trying to send through their food. As a Korean, I found the southern Korean theme very appealing, so keep in mind this is fusion cuisine.

It’s eerie how close some average star ratings get to how I truly feel about a restaurant. Sobban is really a 3.5 star place. I would say the service leans towards 4, but everything else leans towards 3. They don’t take reservations, and yes, our party of FIVE arrived right around 7:15. This is peak dinner hour on a Friday, so I’m really not that upset about the wait. ESPECIALLY because they don’t have that stupid rule where your entire party has to be present to be on the wait list. My main issue with the wait was that the hostess estimated it at 20 minutes maximum. I should have called BS on it immediately. There are literally two tables inside that can seat a party more than 4(unless you count the bar, but I mean, when do five consecutive seats ever open up at the bar?). One party had just been seated and it seemed like the other was working on their appetizers. But I can’t complain too much because she was very attentive, often checking on us to see if we wanted drinks, or menus to look at. Side note, man, the bar seating is super awkward. Because the space is so small, most people waiting congregated outside… right in front of the bar seating. These big pane windows did little to hide any intimacies in people’s conversations, except maybe the sound. Even looking into the restaurant felt uncomfortable as most patrons thought you were staring at them. The large tables are very similar to those at Farm Burger Buckhead, where you get cozy with your neighbor. Our table actually seated 8, so we had another party of 2 sitting right beside us, no divider. Didn’t seem to be much of a problem though. No elbows nor conversations crossed. Although, being the nosy person I am, I did peek over at their food every once in awhile. We ended up sharing 4 appetizers, and 2 entrees + 2 desserts(after much pleading from me). Gogi Mandu — Mandu is basically the Korean dumpling. I felt that the beef was really dry. It need some oil to bring some life to the dumpling. Loved the sauce and the wrapper though. Bossam — A pork belly lettuce wrap that came with a miso mousse and a pecan ssam sauce. It mostly tasted like gochuchang to me. I also only thought the pork belly was okaaaay. It was a little tough and I thought the flavor was really only enhanced with the sauces. Deviled Eggs — I didn’t actually try this but the group consensus was that kimchi goes very well with eggs… strangely. Korean Fried Chicken Wings — I actually thought these chicken wings were the best compared to the other appetizers. The sauce was sweet and tangy. Generally, I’m not a fan of chicken skin but this was strangely appetizing. Soy Ginger Short Ribs — Okay, seriously, these short ribs were so good. Tender, fall off the non existent bone. If it was more than 23square inch cubes for $ 24 dollars, I wouldn’t even think twice and order this ALLTHEFRICKINTIME. I really liked the acorn squash and and the turnip risotto as well. Chili Braised Chicken — This reminds me of a spicy beef stew. I thought the chicken was okay, but the stewsauce, potatoes and carrots were cooked down so soft that they melt in your mouth like pieces of candy. It comes with these triangle pancakes that are reminiscent of naan or Chinese chong you bin(scallion pancakes) without the scallions. Sobban Bingsu — I wanted to like this! I love bingsu of any Asian variety. It’s pretty much crushed ice with condensed milk and whatever toppings you want. This one included green tea ice cream, homemade rice cake, sweet rice puffs, and a pocky stick. This dessert is not very sweet, and I thought their rice cake was awful. They should just go to H-Mart and buy the packs of rice cake and use that. For those who don’t know, rice cakes are pretty much little mochi balls dusted in flour that are sweet and chewy. It’s like a chewier, less sweet marshmallow. These were hard and all I could taste was the flour. Blech. I did not like any part of this except the green tea ice cream. Korean doughnut — Fried dough. The next best thing to fried potatoes. This donut is similar to the Chinese donut you get at Chinese buffets and American Chinese restaurants. So tasty! They allowed us to sub out the green tea ice cream to try the graham cracker ice cream. Creamy and sweet. Honestly, didn’t get that much graham cracker flavor but it was good ice cream, regardless. The doughnut is filled with some kind of nut and sugar mixture. This stole the show in the dessert category. The food was pretty creative, I will give them that. Would I come back? Yeah, I would. But it definitely wouldn’t be a go to.

3.5 stars. == Gogi goon mandu: seared dumpling, ground local beef, shitake, chive Not as greasy as it looked in the pictures or described. I totally bathed it in the sauce that came with it. Can use a BIT more meat to even out the meat to flour ratio. 3.5 stars == Bossam: pork belly I’ve recently become a fan. Tasty on its own but it would be a shame to not pair it with the miso mousse(creamy good) and pecan ssam sauce(spicy and very flavorful so doesn’t need as much of it compared to the mousse). Loved it wrapped in the lettuce. 4.5 stars == KFC: Korean fried chicken The fact that it still retained its crispiness was impressive to me. Interesting slightly sweet(chili ginger) sauce was not memorable to me. I’d prefer to save the calories for something else but it was an experience to at least try what others were raving about. 3 stars. == Kim chi deviled eggs I normally love deviled eggs. This is good but I wasn’t impressed. The kim chi garnish was definitely more intense in flavor. I cannot pinpoint what’s missing in the eggs. Maybe I should have eaten it WITH the kim chi garnish. 3.25 stars. == 3 chili chicken Drenched in a broth-type sauce(?). I’m a potato fan and I loved that the potato was cooked until it was VERY soft. Yum. Also had carrots. What’s most interesting about this dish is that the whatever was used to make the noodle for the kalgatsu dish was flattened into a flatbread(think non-greasy flat nan or roti bread). Dip, roll, drench, bathe it in the broth. Oooh yum. 4.25 stars. == Short ribs It crumbled with the light touch of a metal chopstick. Very tender but not flavorful enough for me. The warm, creamy risotto and the sweet squash are the saving grace. 2.5 stars == Sobban Bingsu I prefer shaved soy milk than ice. Decorated with green tea ice cream and fruits. Be WARNED! Eat this before any other dessert. We ate this after devouring and swooning over the donuts that this tasted more bland in comparison. 3 stars == Donuts Warm with a jelly inside. Topped with powdered sugar and decorated with rasberries. Thoroughly surprised by and enjoyed the graham cracker flavored ice cream. Definitely save this flavorful dessert for last because it will overpower any bland desserts that dare to follow it. 4.5 stars Seating: tiny space inside. Tiny patio with plastic dividers to shield from the elements. Today the dividers were rolled up exposing us to the cold. Heat lamps helped but it mostly kept the head hot. The few that braved the cold made sure to hover near a lamp. Excellent customer service with hostess coming out to check on us. It’s just that our wait for a table was estimated to be 20 minutes but it ended up being more like 40 minutes. After they took our orders, the food came out at a good pace though. 3 stars to make the average be 3.5 overall for the restaurant.

My bf and I went here for lunch today, and I must say, the place isn’t what I expected. It has an outside seating area that overlook Clairmont road. It was too cold for us to sit outside today, but I would in the warmer months. I had the chicken Kalguksu, which is the noodle bowl with chicken, carrots, seaweed, and some green veggies. This $ 10 lunch special came with a smaller portion with a side of 3 gogi goon mandu, which are beef dumplings. My bf ordered the fried pork chop sandwich, which came with sweet potatoes fries. He said the sweet potatoes were excellent, but he did not like his sandwich. We also ordered a kimchi pancake and the Korean fried chicken wings. The chicken wings were yummy. The pancake was average. The restaurant has a good selection of beers, including Korean beers. However, I think their prices are too high for beers. While most restaurants and bars offer beers for around $ 4, Sobban’s Korean beers are $ 7. Too high for one bottle of beer, in my opinion. I had their loose leaf green tea and instant hot coffee. I really enjoyed their green tea, but the coffee was bland. The service was a bit slow, but everyone was super nice. Overall, I would come back for lunch again one day.

Came here b/c I was cold, wanted hot noodles, and… somewhere new I haven’t been! Sobban came onto my Unilocal radar. I actually have passed by this place multiple times the past few years, but never thought to go in. Parking is okay. We went at a random time like. 3PM? It was somewhat empty. But I see the parking be a problem if you go at a busy time. They do have indoor and outdoor seating. But the indoor is limited. If it’s cold/rainy outside the indoor seating is taken, you may have to wait. BUT they do have those heating lamps at each table if you do go outside and need to stay warm :) Food — We ordered the Korean Fried Chicken Wings as an app. Nom. They were good. Gone within 2 mins ha. My bf and I love wings. Would order these again. I saw on here some people didn’t like them, but I’m kind of a wings person soooo… I try them all the time at new places. I think each plate has 4 wings? It was just me and my bf, so if you come with 2+ you may need 2 – 3 plates. I ordered the Chicken Kalgutsu. I love hot noodles during the winter so this dish felt super nice. Broth was ok, but the noodles and spices included were pretty good. They also include a small Kimchi side + an extremely spicy sauce. The dish is also BIG. Took me a good 30 mins to finish. If you’re like me and enjoy all kinds of hot noodles dishes, get this. I personally liked it. My bf ordered the Tofu dish… It was okay. I had a taste — I wasn’t really digging it. Way overpriced. I don’t think we’d get this. Stick with other items! I’d love to try their mandu, japchae, and bibimbop. Service — my server was nice. Attentive. He even tried to fix on the lamp heaters that were broken. Thanks dude! If you’re looking for a hardcore Korean meal. may not be the place. Their banchan is steep money wise. BUT if you’re looking for a fusion place, sure come here.
