Best pizza in Dayton! I have been going there since 1972. The consistency has been perfection since then. Delish!

I was in the downtown area on business and needed somewhere to eat lunch because I was starving. So I pulled out my phone and got on Unilocal to find somewhere close by. Flying Pizza was 3rd on the list and I kinda wanted pizza and I saw that it was sold by the slice and that is always plus for me. The pizza here is a new York style pizza. The pizza was good but nothing to rave about. I have had far worse new York style pizza. There’s is actually good. The staff here is nice and friendly. The dining area and bathrooms were clean. I would recommend Flying Pizza to anyone who needed quick bite to eat.

No. We have been searching for great-tasting pizza since we moved from the Pittsburgh area 10+ years ago. This is not it. It is round and cut into triangles, rather than little cracker pieces most Dayton-area places serve. The crust was about the only decent thing about this pie. The sauce had the texture and taste of the«Chef Boy R’Dee» boxed pizza kits from the grocery store. The«pepperoni» was barely warm and looked and tasted like very thinly sliced Spam. In a word it was Gross. The sliced meatballs were okay but again, barely warm. I’m guessing they put the toppings on after the pizza cooks? The cheese was stringy and tasteless, albeit generous. Also, no free refills on soda(and they use crushed ice) so sip the drink and don’t worry, nothing on the pizza will make you thirsty(unless you get anchovies).

I’ve been to every Flying Pizza parlor except for the one on Main St. in Dayton. Until this week. As with all of them, the experience brought me closer to my hometown of New York. The Dayton store adds it’s own special touch however. It has its own pair of «wise guys.» Thanks for the memories guys!

A Dayton institution since 1971, this local favorite is quick, friendly, clean, and very good. The simple, laidback atmosphere is just what you want in a pizza joint. There are a variety of slices available from 10am on and specialty pies made to order.

The pizza was good, but nothing to write home about. We had the cheese pizza, sauce was lacking a bit in my opinion. Had the NY style, nothing impressive of the crust or cheese. The parking is free if you stay less than 30 mins.

Well — I would have loved to love this since it’s so close to work. But at just under $ 8 for two slices and a couple of dips, I regret the calories. The thin crust is lovely and crackly, the way I like it(yet not a true NY style) but that’s where it stops. The sauce is mildly sweet but has little to no flavor and the cheese also lacks flavor and is industrial. I had green pepper and mushroom on thin crust(a smaller slice to boot than say Late Night Slice in Columbus, or any of the NY slices I’ve had elsewhere) and a Sicilian thick crust plain cheese. The Sicilian cheese had some garlic in the sauce which lent some flavor and the crust had nice tiny airy pockets in it and was fully risen before the may the pie. Pick from any of the daily baked ‘za’s and they will warm it up in the oven for you. Want packets of parm? That will cost you extra… as will a side of the pizza sauce and/or garlic sauce. Free shakes of dried oregano and garlic salt help out the pizza a bit, but even with that, and pepper… and salt, I felt like my cash was not wisely spent. One of the staff was commenting on the biggest rat she’d seen… I hope it wasn’t there. I won’t be returning and will explore other options. The helathcare center kitchen across the way offers fresher ingredients at a better value for now.

I have been a fly pie fan since ’71 and midnight shows at the Victoria. Best no nonsense pizza around. Forget tofu sprouts and pineapple pizza at the chains. Real family owned restaurant with outstanding pizza

I waited way too long as a Daytonian to try the famous Flying Pizza! It was beyond my expectations! Hot, fresh, and the crust is amazing. Everything a pizza should be! A little more pricey than the pizza chains, but well worth it! I will return!

This place bills itself as being real New York Pizza. And the owner, who we spoke with, claims to have lived in New York. When we, two boys from New York, walked in, we chatted with him. He did his best to serve up the New York attitude, but the pizza he served up was not even remotely anything like you get in New York. The crust was just all wrong. It cracked when you fold it, as if it was made from graham crackers or matzoh. New York Pizza crust is firm on the bottom but chewy and has bite. If properly prepared, it is made from high gluten flour. And that gives it that New York Pizza Crust consistency. When I was a kid, when I would walk to the subway station in the morning, I would walk past a few New York Pizza places. They were not yet open for business, but the delivery trucks had already dropped off a few sacks of high gluten flour and that flour sat I the doorways. Every place used it. Flying pizza does not seem to use this. The dough was stiff and rigid and when you folded it to eat it, it cracked spilling the tasteless sauce and ersatz cheese out of the void between the two separated halves. The sauce was flavorless and the cheese was a DuPont experiment in synthesis gone wrong. We ordered sausage slices and the sausage was crumbled over the top of already prepared cheese slices. In New York, the sausages are always sliced then after cooking the links. Not here. Jon Stewart had a hysterical bit about eating New York Pizza. in it he said«Ya fold it an. ya eat it!!» That is exactly right. But if you can’t even fold pizza, it is not New York Pizza. The fellow that told us that his dad set up in Dayton in 1971 after owning a New York Pizza place and that they had kept the traditions alive was sadly mistaken. Either, the pizza never made the trip to Ohio in tact, or it has morphed since 1971 and now has become Dayton Pizza. But dis ain’t New Yawk.

Ok, just really good pizza. If you are looking for an authentic New York style slice, this is the place in Dayton. We used to eat here once a week when we lived in Downtown Dayton and for us, this is a must have stop on our visits home. It’s just that good. Whether you see Frankie, Tony or anyone else, the food is consistantly yummy.

This pizza is by far the best in Dayton, OH if you like the east coast thin crust pizza. It has been here since 1971 and is usually my first stop when I am back in Dayton visiting UD. The quality is still there and it brings back great memories of my UD days!

The Flying Pizza is one of the things I miss the most about living in Dayton. This pizza is truly New York Style and would probably rank up there with some of the best New York Pizza joints if they had a coal oven. There is no better pizza in Dayton I have never had a bad experience when stopping in to this place.

Tasty good pizza and friendly staff. Parking is really easy as there is lots of metered parking and also a garage attached to the restaurant. Definately try Flying pizza if you haven’t already.

I’ve been eating at The Flying Pizza since 1971. If you haven’t had their Sicilian Squares, you’re missing the whole point! Thick dough, great cheese and sause, light and crispy on the bottom. The staff is the friendliest I’ve seen and very eager to please. Great atmosphere. A big plus is you can now park in the garage right behind the store(with parking validation). I eventually tire of all other pizzas except The Flying Pizza. Doesn’t get much better than this. Shake off those suburban shackles and go downtown for some great pizza and atmosphere!

The best pizza place in Dayton. Great staff, great NYC-style pizza, and you can buy it by the slice. Of the 3 locations, this one is my fave. I grew up in Dayton and have eaten here a million times. I’ve never been disappointed. Parking downtown can be a pain, but who cares!?! I now live in the DC area, and have found no pizza like Flying Pizza’s!
