This spot has now become a staple when adventuring along the 1. This spot is just past a field of gorgeous yellow flowers that bloom in the spring, and right before davenport landing. The location is amazing. The restaurant itself is across the street from glorioud cliffs, and inside of quaint Davenport. Stopped at the restaurant with my partner. Althouvh the restaurant was packed we were able to recieve quick service and seated almost immediatly. The restaurant has salads, sandwhiches, pastries, a full bar, soups, breakfast, and it all sounded amazing. We ordered crab cake appetizer, fish and chips, and a cup of clam chowder. My partner also ordered a beer, the only issue that was not even a big deal was the way the server checked his ID. She must have held it for a few minutes and did not seem to trust us, which made me uncomfortable, but not a big deal as we are pretty babyfaced and service was great and attentive otherwise. Water was constantly being served. Our food came out in under ten minutes. The flavor of the food was good not excellent. Ive had better fish and chops but they definitely fill the craving. The clam chowder is creamy and not to thick. And the crab cakes were my favorite! We left extremely full and satisfied. I recommend appetizers! Our total was $ 31 which is not too bad. I would definitely come back for breakfast which is served until 12 on weekends, and pasties which are local and look amazing. This place is really a gem along the 1. Perfect for a stop during your day trip! Enioy!

Located on U.S. 1, across the street from a rocky lookout of the magical ocean, this place has a casual vibe, good food(would love to see more vegan items), a patio where diners can watch the sunset and a very nice bakery with two vegan items(vegan chocolate muffins and rosemary rolls). They offer excellent coffee(no soy or almond milk) that’s good enough to drink black. Lots of cyclists ride the scenic 10 miles from Santa Cruz to Davenport just to eat lunch here and return home. They attract lots of folks from Hipsters to families to romantic couples to seniors. It’s a good place with good food — so popular that one often cannot find a place to park if your mode of transportation is not a bike. I plan to return in search of menu items that can be made vegan.

Great hosts. Great servers. Great cooks. Amazing location. I think just based on the likeliness of amazing location and terrible food… Whale city crushes it! Too often I am disappointed with the food at establishments with phenomenal views. Whale city does not let you down.

I always patronize Whale City Bakery and Café when I am day tripping down the Pacific Coast Highway. The Staff servers are always friendly and aim to please. One of my favorites sandwiches is the Tuna Salad Melt which is usually served with fries but Today I asked to substitute the fries with their delicious Beet/spinach/cranberry salad topped w/candied pecans. The server was very accommodating and friendly. The tuna salad was fresh and topped with avocado and melted jack cheese between toasted sourdough: It paired very well with the salad. As always… It was yummy and satisfying. I ended my meal with a delicious cup of afrogatto coffee served with a generous scoop of chocolate/caramel vanilla swirl ice cream. Can’t wait for my next trip down the pacific coast highway!

I truly hate writing reviews like this especially to a place I’ve been to multiple times. But it wasn’t the best experience this time. I’m giving two stars because maybe this is a staffing issue that the owners don’t know about. First off I’ve been here multiple times always great food. This time on the other hand multiple things went wrong, my friend and me both being in the food industry noticed a lot of things being done in front of us and made us very uneasy. Watching the guy who is handling money turn around and grab tomatoes to put them on a salad with his bare hands right after touching money. As we look down at our salad and think we hope he didn’t do that with ours??? Also watched them take cherry juice from what looked to be a very old crusty cherry jar and pour it into a grenadine bottle. Cooked bacon sitting out, definitely not being kept at the temperature it should be. Which made us uneasy since we were both eating things that had bacon. Halfway through my hamburger I came across two black hair. Our waitress was incredible she was a very adorable girl with a pixie cut and piercings we were very happy with her. It was watching the people on the other side and what they were doing that just made her stomach turn. We noticed the staff treated it like they were at their house hanging out on their phones no one wants to see someone handle money and their cell phone and turn around and cook food without washing hands. The food is delicious, but when health is a factor we have to stop. Couldn’t even finish our meal we just wanted to get out of there as quick as we could! Being in a small town it’s obviously hard to find great workers or people who care about a business as much as a owner. But that many issues at one time we are praying we don’t get sick.

My boyfriend, a friend, and I stopped by Sunday afternoon on our drive home. We were seated promptly, greeted by our server, and received ice water while we waited for our pitcher of ice cold beer(accompanied by chilled pint glasses). We ordered fried artichokes for the table, and for entrees a cheeseburger, a pesto burger, and an order of chicken fingers. The artichokes were divine. Lightly battered and fried, served with a side of ranch dressing. There were a TON of them on the plate(as we’re big fans of fried artichokes, we order them often and there are usually a half-dozen or so, but this portion was huge.) My boyfriend loved the pesto burger(and onion rings), our friend really enjoyed the chicken fingers, and I thought my cheeseburger was incredibly good. Our server did forget to add the cheese to my burger, but had it fixed immediately. No one is perfect, but the waitstaff was incredibly accommodating and unbelievably friendly. Honestly, my biggest complaint is that there is only one tiny bathroom, and you might have to stand in line to use it(although we did go at peak lunch time on a Sunday afternoon, so it was pretty busy inside!) but it’s not enough to knock the review down by a star. I really don’t understand the 1 and 2-star reviews here. People seem to have no sense of patience… Based on my experience(and the numerous 4 – 5 star reviews) I feel like those 1 and 2 star reviews are flukes, and are unfairly bringing the average of this place down. I wish I had tried a cookie or pastry because they looked fantastic. I have a feeling we’ll be back in Davenport in a few months and I look forward to coming back to Whale City.

Beautiful location overlooking the Pacific. Nice outdoor seating. We only got iced lattes and pastry/desserts. The lattes were surprisingly excellent. All the desserts and pastries we tried were really good too.

My gf and I came in on a Saturday to enjoy some lunch and a break from the beach. We were seated but then not assisted or spoken to again by the waiter for about 10 minutes. We just sat there waiting to order; we watched two other tables be seated after us and served with drinks and appetizers before we were even spoken too; simply because we had a different waiter. He finally came back and took our order. Food was great.

Nice staff. Cold beer(8:50am) Cool atmosphere. More of a coffee shop than a bar. Headed down the coast… great place to stop in.

We have stopped by this place many times when we drove down on Hwy1. It’s always busy. People are nice and lay back. No matter breakfast, lunch, snack or dinner, they will get you taken care of. They’ve got great bakery that being displayed. Hard to resist the temptation.

This is the perfect little stop on your trip down HWY1. We chose Whale City Bakery over the others in the area because it looked really busy and inviting. We also wanted a patio to enjoy the lovely California coastal weather. Service was attentive, friendly and quick and the food was just as enjoyable. My husband had The Landing burger with pepperjack cheese, peppers and onions. It was huge, and the onion rings that he ordered with it were nicely cooked as well. I had the Tostada Salad which was really nice. It was huge, and I probably shouldn’t have eaten the whole thing… However, I couldn’t stop! Rather than a traditional salad served in a taco bowl, the tostada was on the bottom which made it easier to incorporate into every bite. Being from Canada, we had to have a Mr. Pibb which we don’t have back home. The server was quick to bring refills, which were much appreciated after our long hike in Ano Nuevo.

I’ve been going to and or passing through Davenport my entire life. I miss certain things about the way it was, memories of my childhood. The next thing about this spot isn’t the great food, it’s the outdoor seating. For me personally sitting outside watching the traffic go by on highway 1 while the fog breaks overhead is so comforting. It reminds me of not one certain memory or event but encompasses what the area is completely. The food is amazing. I had the crab cake benedict last lime I was there. The crab cakes are huge and full flavored. The eggs were poached perfectly and the portions were the correct proportion to the muffin, something you don’t see everywhere. They do it right, no shortcuts. My daughter had the french toast with strawberries and whipped cream, the French toast had great flavor. Overall the food has that extra love that makes it better than an average resturant. I’ve been to some ritzy spots with big names that can’t deliver food as good for double the price. This food is great and the place has a wonderful vibe.

Needed to use the restroom before we headed down to Davenport beach when we saw that they served ice cream. A good selection of flavors and a generous scoop for a good price. Glad we stopped by.

We only stopped by to order a few pastries, but I was pleased with the wide selection of goodies that they had available. Their pastry displays are directly to the right of the restaurant(when you walk in), and you are immediately captivated by all the yumminess staring at you! At least we were. It was a pretty busy restaurant(we came on a Saturday around 4pm), and I was appreciative that the waitress had great customer service skills and helped us out immediately as soon as we came in. I hear they have delicious ice cream sandwiches, and this is an awesome spot as it also has a beautiful view of the ocean from a distance. Would love to check out the actual food menu one day, but the desserts were YUM. Ordered the almond torte and the lemon bar. Great choices. Oh, AND they have organic coffee. Win!

I’m surprised the overall rating here isn’t higher. This place made my soul happy. I dropped in on my way back to Oakland from Santa Cruz. I went the long way to avoid traffic and stumbled upon Thursday night Happy Hour. Friendly locals, a dog friendly patio, great pozole, tacos, and wine at real HH prices made my day. I can’t wait to be back!
