Metro Diner is my favorite restaurant in Dallas, hands down. The service is ALWAYS friendly, the crowd is a mish-mash of everything under the sun(from the homeless to the wealthy), and the breakfast

Metro Diner is more about the nostalgia and novelties that it has provided. For several years it was the only true 24 hour diner in the Downtown/Lakewood area with aged waitresses and cooks and predominantly patrons from nearby Baylor Hospital. Its a neighborhood spot that is very personal and down to earth. The food is simple and affordable but the reason i came to this establishment recently was because i learned about it closing down for good and the new space will now be used as a parking lot by Baylor Hospital which is a sign of the times. In Commemoration of the Closing they decided to roll back the prices of their meals to about 40years ago when it first opened so i went with a good friend of mine for the specials which consisted of $ 1.10 Master Burgers and also Similar breakfast entrees. My last dining at Metro was memorable too because it was packed and there was a line there we had to share tables with strangers and got to reminisce about the old times which was a beauty in itself. Our total food order came to $ 4.06 and we probably tipped handsomely to show appreciation to the waitstaff who have always provided decent service and we bid our adieus. It wont be missed as much since a lot of after hourspots have sprung up but none can replace Metro diner. P.S There is another location on Davis and Hampton which is a bit off from me but if i ever crave some of that Southern style Breakfast and Service then i might pop in for a little bitey.

It is to bad that this place has closed it’s location on Gaston I have some really great memories of this place. I believe that there is another location in south Dallas but I have not been there yet. I have been going to this place for years! It’s not one of the best dives to eat at in Dallas! the coffie is good and the pancakes are excellent. If your looking for fine dinning this is not the place for you but if you want the nastalga of a 50’s greasy spoon dinner this is deffanatly the best around.

I came here with a friend to eat breakfast one last time before their closing, and I remembered both why I loved and didn’t love this place in one sitting. Our waitress was sweet as pie, and was fast taking down our orders. Our food came very shortly afterward, as well. I ordered an egg combo, and the one thing I did not like about it, curiously enough, were the eggs. I always ask for my eggs well-scrambled, to the point that they begin to get a little golden. These were far from it. They were a bit runny, and they did not taste very good at all. I felt like I was tasting the skillet instead of the egg. Yuck. The sausage and grits though, were pretty tasty, as was the pancake. My toast had already been buttered for me, and I enjoyed that too! Upon checking out, the woman at the register told me that in order to split the check, she needed the waitress who served us to come and do it, which I didn’t quite get, given the highly simplistic nature of their cashing-out system. We waited for about eight minutes, before giving up and just putting it on one tab. No one even spoke to us again until we went back to the register. Gonna miss this place a little bit… but at least there’s the one in Oak Cliff. And the eggs taste better there. :)

The Metro Diner is closing in March. :( This place is a Dallas classic, go check it out before they turn it into part of Baylor. It’s right across the street from The Elbow Room — which I also recommend as a Dallas oldie.

I think I licked the damn plate! This place is breakfast perfection. Egg over easy, hash browns and bacon came on the spotless plate all separate and perfect like a 5 star uppity joint. Juxtapose this with metallic plastic red seats from the 60’s, wood paneling and you get the full diner experience! The place is always packed and the food is as good as the service. Pull up a tacky stool and eatem up!

Dirty? Yes Umm. . «interesting Crowd»? Definitely! Not so great service? Well, that depends on how the late night staff feels. Food — AMAZING! Cheap? You bet! What more could you ask for in a late night place? Seriously, it’s an old diner, it’s has great food and is perfect for the late night. I hear it’s a little scary during the day, but still tasty. All I know, after the bar, it’s perfect!

When I first arrived here after work one day, I thought the place was quaint. There was a charm to it. «The Diner That Time Forgot», I thought to myself. Then I sampled the fare. It turned out that this place was actually«The Diner That Soap Forgot.» Dirty plates, the spoon placed in my coffee cup had old cheese on it, greasy food that turned my stomach. Never again.

you know it’s bad when you get to a bar wasted and the food is STILL awful. And the place was empty after the bars closed on a weekend. Not a good sign. i loved hitting the cheap-n-greasy diners after closing out the bars back in the day, so I thought this would be a fun trip down memory lane after drunk karaōke at the dallasite… not a memory worth traipsing down at the metro. nasty food. the best thing they have going for them is they are near a hospital, which you’ll surely need(or at the very least a toilet you feel is clean enough to hurl in) after eating this slop.

So just when I thought my snocker’d self tried every late night diner in Dallas, last night my buddy proved me wrong. I don’t know how I’ve missed this place, but then again it’s a little place right next to Baylor and lucky for me I’ve haven’t had to frequent the ER. So for the late night meal I will be working off today I chose the burger and tots. I mean what can I say, it was a pretty dern good burger and the tots hit the spot. Also, It was a relief I didn’t have to fight the gaggle of gays at Buzzbrews, But you’re not going to find BB veggie sausage here, oh no it’s all real diner eats. Our the waitress was great and totally Johnny on the spot. Yeah it took a little while to get our food but literally one little lady is cooking up all the grease bombs on the griddle in the front. We had a front row seat. I mean this woman is calm and just churning everything out plate after plate. The people watching was primo as well, and what’s a late night out without the cops showing up?! Nothing big some girls parked car got smacked in the parking lot — girl was seriously about to bust a vein over it too. Personally I’m a fan and would definitely head back to Metro Diner anytime for some after hours eats.

4 am. Dear god, where has the night taken me? As we waited 20 minutes for our food we got to experience some chick physically kick the guy sitting next to her out of their booth. He proceeded to call her a stripper and a whore and stormed off. From there we witnessed a few other tables treat the much older server/waitress like crap. She was totally unfazed like it wasn’t her first rodeo. We finally got our food for the two of us. It was absolutely delicious: Jalapeño burger and tots Side of sausage Tall stack of blueberry pancakes Small stack of buttermilk pancakes Belgian waffle 2 cups of coffee If you can stomach the clientele and the general aura of the place, then you will be in for a delicious feast.

Its a known fact that you can eat anything after 10PM and not suffer any consequences, so luckily it was 10:15 when I began craving a greasy diner experience. And lemme tell ya, Metro Diner definitely fit the bill. The sparkly red booths make you flash back to the 50’s when diners were popular. The dirt and grease reminds you that the building is infact old enough to have been around in the 50’s. This is fine, because when I think diner, I think classic and retro — Classic and retro meaning it was around way back in the day… and anything that old is gunna be dirty people! Enjoy it! You’ve gotta dig in the dirt a bit to find a badass dinosaur fossil, right? anyway. On to the food! I had a big bowl o’ chili that was yumzville, and the boy enjoyed a plate of breakfast. We had a hiccup(eggs not cooked quite enough) and the waitress was pleased to go back and cook them longer. Our waitress was polite and downhome and took good care of us. All said and done I think I paid less than 15 bucks for two drinks, two meals, and tip. Not bad for a fun experience and decent food. Plus being open 24 hours is a wonderful thing.

Of all the times I have dined at Metro Diner, I can finally say I’ve been here sober! While it is a stellar choice to wrap up a night of too much drinking, it can also be a nice quiet place to grab a bite while the sun is up. The chicken strips and the chicken fried steak with white gravy are both fantastic! The grilled cheese is not so good since half of the sandwich doesn’t even have cheese in it… no wonder it’s only $ 3.50. This place is the perfect greasy spoon type of place with all kinds of specials and cheap stick to yer ribs food, but don’t come here looking for healthy alternatives. They also have a jukebox, though I’m not sure it works.

This place is cool for the kitsch/novelty factor. This food is very unhealthy, and normally the place is inhabited by a few unsavory citizens, some being the staff. Shouldn’t margarine be outlawed? This place deserves to be in some museum on Americana. That’s is good a thing I can say about it. If you need a late night bite, it might suffice, and you’ll meet some strange folks. ps. I actually kind of like this place the first time cause I thought it was kinda cool atmosphere. Second time, the food was just gross and very unhealthy.

some goooooood eatz. I gotta say I was bit skeptical cause everyone was saying that the best experience was late night and everything else was so-so… but honestly, my sunday morning breakfast experience was solid. i ordered«the woody» since that was advised by Unilocalers. after demolishing the whole plate, I must say, I was thoroughly satisfied. Also, the atmosphere was fantastic. Heard Beatles, Bob Marley, and the Eurythmics(Sweet Dreams!) on the juke… and I like dat about dis place! gotta dig the juke… woohoo for Metro! Me likes. me likes it a lot. will definitely be back, specially cuz its CHEAP! oh and the coffee does indeed rock.

Do you know what is NOT good to do at 3am? Eat. Do you know what is NOT good to eat at 3am? Grilled cheeses, french fries, onion rings, and the rest of your friend, Jenn’s sausage, eggs and pancake fiesta. But do you know WHAT? I don’t care. It was goooood, and it will be goooood again the next time I roll in here with my crew past 2am. This is definitely one of my favorite late night eat places. You can order anything you want whether it’s a burger, french toast or fried egg. The waitresses are always nice and they are used to crazy drunkards that roll in there lookin’ for something to sop up their drunk.(Not me of course.) The area can be sketchy(it’s my area, so I can say that) so just watch yourself. You should order the grilled cheese and your friend should order the Woody. Then when you have scarfed your beautifully gooey sammie down, you should eat off your friend’s plate. ‘Cuz she’s real nice like that. Next time you are in Deep Ellum or Expo Park, check this spot out. It’s right around the corner.

This is a true greasy spoon. I love places like this, where I the food is quick, the waitress calls me honey, and I can get fried eggs any time of day. We went there for lunch the other day, me and my step-dad. He owns an air conditioning business and he knows where the best little dives are all over Dallas. If he likes Metro Diner, then it MUST be a winner. He had the special of the day, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, and fried okra. It was written on the chalkboard along with a list of other possible sides of the day and the breakfast special of the day. It was good. They obviously cook from scratch. The steak was not huge, but this was a lunch portion in a diner… not Black-eyed Pea. It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. There wasn’t too too much batter either, which is a complaint of mine. I like crispy, but I like to be able to FIND the steak inside the batter. I asked the waitress what she thought was good – all the time chanting my mantra in my head, «Do not call her Flo, do not call her Flo, do not call her Flo.» She suggested the patty melt. It was everything a patty melt should be. The burger was cooked medium, cheese was melty, onions kinda carmely, bread toasty, and greasy – just the right amount. I would not make a special trip to Metro Diner, but it’s open 24-hours and the food is always pretty stable. I work downtown, so me and my step-dad pop in ever so often. Sometimes he actually knows the waitresses, seems these waitresses move from place to place on occasion. One time the waitress was actually named Flo.

I definitely agree with the previous reviewer — this is the quintessential«diner!» And when you leave your clothes will smell like a diner, too. It’s open 24/7, has great people watching, and they keep the coffee comin’. It’s the kind of place where the waitress might call you«honey» or «sweetheart.» But BRINGCASH because they don’t accept anything else. Good jukebox too, and a friendly atmosphere. But you’ve been warned — they will only re-heat your coffee once, so drink quickly or don’t complain! *edit* I just found out yesterday that they have started taking credit cards. Looks like I’ll be at Metro a whole lot more now.
