Don’t just go for the Tex-Mex standards here, which are above par, but branch out & try the spicy, complex Mole. It is served either over shredded White chicken meat or chicken enchiladas with white cheese.(An item my partner requested so many times years ago they put it on the menu!) The Mole is the right balance of chocolate, chilies and slow cooked spices that give a rare home cooked taste. Not for everyone’s palate but a saucy treat for those willing to step off the regular Taco path. Also for those of you that like it spicy the Napolitoes are super. The cactus is diced and sauteed with onions and Gonzalez’s fiery green salsa. It is served with their lardy beans and cumin rich rice. Be sure to have have plenty of their face sized flour tortillas on hand to ease the complex burn. As stated in other reviews, the Guisada is very good as are the many varieties of enchiladas. The surprise on the menu is Steak Milansa. You will hear them pounding it after you order it; then it it is breaded, fried and with the BEST hand cut french fries in Oak Cliff. A small salad with a cup of guacamole comes with it. Healthy? No way! A great bargain & tasty item is any of their breakfast burritos. These are really the flour tortillas wrapped around fluffy eggs with potatoes; eggs & house-made chorizo, or my favorite, eggs with jalapeños & potatoes. There about 10 choices of burritos. Served all-day! For healthier choices try their tostada plates. Also ask your Server for Salsa Fresca, you’ll be glad you did.

Flour tortillas are as good as everyone has said, asking for the green salsa is good advice too. Beans and enchilada sauce are homemade and the food is pretty good. Not a lot of layers of flavor like a more american mexican restaurants but thats not what you’re here for! Authentic, family run…

So I bookmarked this place primarily for its crispy tacos. Blame it on the Texas Monthly that released the 120 Texan tacos people gotta try before they die. And they rated the crispy tacos 4.75 out of 5 in that magazine. And so what could I do? This is what the Texas Monthly had to say: «The tortilla shell is freshly fried(you can tell by the lingering whiff of oil), the well-seasoned ground beef is blessedly ungreasy, and the grated cheese is Monterey Jack. Not to mention the lettuce and tomato, which are bright and crisp – not pale or wilted – and served at room temperature, not straight from the fridge. A word to the wise: this taco, plus the restaurant’s huge, fluffy handmade flour tortillas, makes for a long lunch line any day, but especially after church on Sunday.» And this is what I have to say: The cheese was not monterrey jack but American cheddar. The tomato was cold, not at room temperature, and had the refrigerated mealy look. The ground beef sure isn’t greasy, and is fine. The taco shell itself is the standout though — freshly fried, flakey and fragile — it crumbled delicately like a thin tempura batter would, and was of a lighter color than one would normally find in a supermarket. It came accompanied with refried beans that were literally perfect — balanced in its amount of lard and bean ratio to make for a delicious side. And also, it came with pillowy, fresh and thick flour tortilla that, and in hindsight, should have been used to wrap the delicate taco for eating so as not to make it shatter through the fingers of your hands like snow. But because of the mishap with the tomatoes, and the uninspired cheese — this place could almost a glorified Taco Bell. But thankfully it’s better. As for the rest of the food offered here, it’s very old-school Tex-Mex — made for the carnivorous type that shudder at the suggestion of «healthy-eating» with the absence of fresh vegetables, and its overabundance of mushy rice, cheese, lard, beans, and beef. This place seems to be popular, and loved by many generations that have lived in this Oak Cliff barrio. It has survived the times and become a part of the renovated building where it remains. But secretly inside, I’m still hoping for the day being near when Tex-Mex will officially be declared dead. Or revamped. For something healthier and better like its Mexican cousins on our left and right coasts. But until it does, do come here to learn how old-school Tex-Mex could be made almost right.

What a meal, my father Inlaw had the famous carne guisada, my son had The Gonzalesz plate which gave him a Variety. My husband had the famous cheese enchiladas, I had the shrimp rancheros. All was yummy. Especially the warm chips, red, green salsa and the warm home made thick flour tortillas. The staff was attentive & nice. Will definitely be back for some home cook meals just like my mother Inlaw made. When we are in Dallas.

The best homemade flour tortillas in Oak Cliff. The breakfast burritos are great, especially if you need them to-go.

Great menudo & breakfast taco. My husband got the chilaquiles and liked it a lot. I liked the hot sauce(as it was mild, I don’t like spicy) Good service.

When they bring out the chips ask for the green sauce instead it’s better and hotter. I ordered the burrito de chicharron with eggs it’s a weird combination for me. Rice was too greasy, the flour tortillas are way to thick. I won’t be back. Waitress was super friendly. Food is overrated and over priced.

We loved so many things about this family oriented Mexican restaurant. While it is off the beaten path, we knew it would be good when there was a wait for some of their larger tables. We were able to be seated right away for a party of two. We were not as wild about the hot salsa they served, but per the other Unilocal suggestions we requested the«cold salsa» and it was excellent. We had the enchiladas and the fajitas. Usually my boyfriend does not love steak at Mexican restaurants but we both felt like the steak in the fajitas was exceptionally seasoned and well cooked. The enchilada sauce tasted homemade. Their flour tortillas, just as everyone raved about were wonderful. They are served warm and are thick – almost like a gordita. We agreed we would come back just for the flour tortillas. The service was great, even though they were very busy we were in and out. Our server took the time to tell us what he liked on the menu. This restaurant is very family oriented, the vast majority of the tables were full of multi generational families sharing a meal. They do serve beer, wine and hard liquor, but you can tell that their priority here is quality food in a welcoming atmosphere. There is a decent amount of street parking that is metered. Prices are cheap for the food and the drinks. We saw another table get Sopapillas and while we were too full they looked amazing and will be back to try them too. Overall this is a wonderful authentic Mexican resturant that is worth a visit.

Oh Yes, Yes. I am surprised this place doesn’t have more ratings. Homemade flour tortillas seem to be hard to find in Dallas restaurants but this place has GOT it! The carne guisada was BOMB. I’m from San Antonio and yearn for Tex-Mex, this is legit.

I always enjoy eating at Gonzalez. I usually order the 2⁄3 beef enchiladas with rice and beans, of course. It is always very good and filling. Just a suggestion: if you have room for dessert, the Arroz con Leche is really good!

My wife works near by & has been telling me about all the places in & around the Oak Cliff area. We recently went to Gonzalez after the Mardi Gras parade & let me tell you, it hit the spot! The rice & beans were actually fresh & good compared to any other Mexican restaurant that keeps them on the stove all day. The Tortillas were so thick & good, I ordered some to go. Service was good, we were seated quickly & served promptly. Overall, great experience & I am looking forward to other dining experiences in Oak Cliff. Try it, you’ll enjoy it!

We went here for the crispy tacos. The tacos were good and so were the flour tortillas, but everything else was lacking. The margaritas were made from a mix, over priced, and too sweet. The cheese enchiladas were mediocre at best, and the chips and salsa were also not very good. We will not be going back.

Just went to check this place out for lunch for the first time and it was closed at 12:50 p.m. due to what appeared to be remodeling.

Not the best Mexican place I have eaten but fair enough. Everyone raves about the tortillas but in my opinion they are too thick especially if you are eating them with fajitas. The hot sauce was fair. Now the good points: the beef fajitas were pretty good. They were tasty and tender. The chicken soup was very tasty with plenty of white chicken. The chicken enchiladas were good but I have had better at Herreras. The waitress was very nice

I’ve been coming here for years. Order the«cold salsa» when you get your chips. The carne quisada, carne asada, and bisteck are probably the best things on the menu. They have the normal tex mex fair as well. The flour tortillas are by far the best I’ve ever had. Make sure you order some to go!

I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed the food here! The flour tortillas are thick and taste as if they were fresh off the comal. The rice was flavored a bit too much for my liking however it was still tasty! The beans are definitely homemade and the atmosphere here is wonderful. I give this place 4 stars because they do not have fountain drinks and each can is $ 1.75. Everyone in my party went through at least 2 drinks so that can get pricey. Overall, I recommend this place if you are searching for fresh homemade food.

Stop what you’re doing and come to this place to get the best tortillas you will ever have. Not even exaggerating. I came to this gem of a place in the heart of Oak Cliff on a Sunday afternoon. Maybe it was the church crowd or maybe it’s just always like this, but it was quite busy, but then again the place wasn’t that big. We ordered the supreme nachos as an appetizer and I ordered the cheese/chicken enchiladas. The nachos were great and the enchiladas is at most what you can expect from enchiladas. The thing that sold me the about this place was their tortillas. As much as these reviewers insist, this is THE place to get the best tortillas, it is worth it just to eat here for them.

Holy flour tortillas! I could stop in this place to just eat a flour tortilla and would be happy. They are large and thick just like I like my… tortillas:-o Everything else I have had here has been good as well. The one dish that sticks out is the chilaquiles with guiso. This dish was not only tasty but I don’t think I ate another thing the rest of the day because I was so full when I left.
