Located inside Tony’s Neighborhood Store, Champs brings its national franchise to Dallas. Odd choice of location situated across the intersection from the neighborhood’s historic favorite, Henderson Chicken(now Chicken House). Snacks come with one side. Meals come with two sides and a biscuit. «Chicken dippers» looked to be more batter than chicken and fried chicken didn’t look like it had enough batter so we opted for the tenders. $ 6.89 for a 3 chicken tender meal may seem kind of high, but this is one filling meal. We tried the mac-n-cheese, potato wedges, and mashed potatoes.(Green beans and corn looked overcooked) Chicken tenders(and dippers) come with a choice of one dipping sauce(there seemed to be 5 – 7 options). Cooked to perfection and flavorful with just a bit of seasoning in the batter. Real mashed potatoes and gravy equally delicious with plenty of pepper. Buttermilk biscuit was very moist and filling. As cheap as the ingredients in gravy are, I wish they offered the gravy as a dipping sauce especially for that biscuit. You get 3 – 4 potato wedges as a side and those babies are delicious and filling. Mac-n-cheese is kept warm in a double-boiler away from the steam table so ask for it if he doesn’t offer it. It is so thick and hardy it literally fought back and lifted my Styrofoam tray on first scoop. Cheesy but could have used some pepper. They also offer liver and gizzards(both looked good but not my cup of tea), fried shrimp(looked small and overcooked), and chicken fried pork loin. Of note, in the cooler next to the beer are assorted packages of cold chicken. Definitely will be going back.
