Have you ever poked a sharp needle into a huge bundle of wool only to turn it into a nifty little snowman or squirrel or even a felted image of some sort? Me neither. But I’ve made acorns. And caterpillars. And little smiley faces. From wool. So cool, right? Or, er… so warm, right? Years ago, on a whim, I discovered some little shop in a little town in Illinois that introduced me to the slightly magical world of needle felting. Who knew you could do so much with wool? Well, when Heartfelt Fleece & FIber opened in Cynthiana, I was psyched. It’s actually a wool mill that offers washing, carding, and felting services to shepherds and farmers of fiber animals(think: sheep, llamas, etc.). They’ll take your raw wool and turn it into usable fabrics/materials for your handmade creations. Sweet! [Note to self: get a couple llamas so I can ‘grow’ my own clothes.] There’s also a storefront, which is the main part of the shop as you walk through the doors. Heartfelt sells all the supplies needed to make these whimsical felted creations. Not only will you find felting sponges, needles, wool dyed in all sorts of colors, felted hats, and wool dryer balls(among a few projects), but you can pick up knitting needles, handspun wool yarn, and other things for your crafty self. Scarves, rugs, wreaths, hats, booties, and all sorts of other cute handmade gifts can be found on the walls too. And don’t forget to get yourself a jar of jam from their farm! AND! THEYHAVECLASSES! You can learn how to make felted wall hangings, knit, crochet, and more. Heck, host yourself a fiber arts party! While I’ve been in a few times to chat with the store owner and purchased some roving, I have yet to take a class. I’m so intruiged. Even right now, I’m thinking it would be so fun to host a party(especially with all that warm wool during the cold winter months). Definitely check this shop out if you’re in town and fiber is your thing.
