We were so excited about checking out Bart’s Cart, but arrived in September, shortly after labor day, and legend has it that Bart returns to the mainland outside of the summer holiday period. So be careful when coming to the island outside of the summertime, would recommend bringing some extra food just in case.

A guy named Bart, sells food from a cart. Bart’s Cart is the gourmet restaurant on Cuttyhunk Island. The cart and Bart is on fisherman’s pier during lunch hour Friday through Tuesday, weather and Bart permitting. Bart takes the food from the cart, hands it to you and then you go and sit on one of the picnic tables by the water. Can’t get any easier than that. The food is actually pretty good, considering it comes from a cart. Bart has an amazing selection of different things, fish & chips, fried shrimp, fish sandwiches, lobster rolls, different types of burgers and dogs, onion rings, and some great desserts like fried banana caramel cheese cake. You can even get a crummy t-shirt from Bart that says, Bart’s Cart. The cart does have a bottom and Bart starts to run out the more popular items as time goes by, so if you get at the cart late you might end up having cheese cake and onion rings for lunch. I usually get the fish and chips from Bart and it is consistently good. All right, not exactly the best I ever had, but considering it comes from a cart, not bad. Some of stuff from Bart does get a bit soggy later in the day but I’ve never heard of anyone getting sick from the food in Bart’s Cart. Sitting on the picnic tables by the water, eating food from a cart seems like a luxury on Cuttyhunk. Sure the big stinky dogs tend to beg a bit and the gulls can become aggressive at times but that part of the ambiance of eating at Bart’s. One enormous gull in particular will sit on the table and scream at you until you give him some food. I’m surprised Bart doesn’t put him in his cart. Bart and his cart. If you stay on the island for any length of time you will try his food. There just aren’t a lot of options and the location and views are fantastic. And you will share your food from the cart with the screaming gulls and the big stinky dogs. It’s part of the tradition. Bart and his cart. Casual dining at it’s finest.
