Overpriced for what you get. Not homemade food all, dump it out of a can and on a plate. Very disappointed. Staff was fine.

Just don’t do it. Not great food and very small portions. AND staff was not very friendly either.

Highly disappointed with service, food was ok. Would try other local places in town first. Looked promising from outside, ambiance seemed ok, was seriously disappointed with service. We are generally easygoing, good tipping peeps, just expected a little friendliness, found none.

I was very hungry after a long day of driving from Cody, WY to see Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. I ordered the liver and onions, which was not bad. You have to like liver, which I happen to like very much, when it is done well. It’s not for everyone. During my meal the waitresses congregate at a very nearby table, a former waitress asks, «What’s good here?» My waitress replies, «The liver and onions is pretty good.» The ex-waitress says, «Really? Minus the liver and minus the onions.» They all laugh. Seriously? I’m sitting right next to them and I can hear everything. Up until that point, I was hungrily eating my meal. I had to stop abruptly to write this review. Having said that, they are young and probably didn’t realize. The fact of the matter is that it was rude. I don’t normally give negative reviews but that really bothered me. I’m a woman, traveling alone and I at least want to enjoy my meal. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. The food was good, as was the service up until that point. It’s the only place that is open at almost 9:00 pm. Call me crazy but I still left a 15% tip. :)

The place is unfortunately closed, perhaps permanently. There is a For Sale sign on the building.

Avoid at all costs… The food was Ok, our waitress was great but when I asked the cashier why they don’t take American Express her, «we just don’t» answer led to, «I’m tired of people asking»… Followed by a ridiculously rude tirade. The Black Hills area is a tourist destination but if you’re hoping to use American Express I recommend trying another restaurant; pass on Dakota Cowboy Inn.

Great food! Patty Melt, Meatloaf Sandwich, Burger, and Nachos– all were Delicious! Prices were fair… Not great. The service was the one disappointment… Or waitress seemed very disinterested in her job(almost«slow» to the point she may have been on something). Not very friendly. But the food was good enough that I’d good back. The other minus is the bathroom situation… Only one per men and women. There was a constant line the entire time we are there and it wasn’t busy.

I just don’t know what’s going on in the midwest with the food. It’s like they don’t know what seasoning is. All the food I’ve had has been really bland. Take the Dakota Cowboy Inn for example. It has the requisite gift shop up front and a restaurant in the back. It looks sort of old school /dive bar’ish with low lighting, booths, and a lived in look. I ordered a teriyaki chicken dish with veggies and a baked potato. The chicken was alright, but the baked potato was clearly microwaved, and the veggies were out of a frozen bag. Dad had liver and onions which he liked, but he also had a couple of glasses of wine which probably helped a lot. There was nothing we were served that I couldn’t have made myself and made better. Do you want a great baked potato? Put a little canola oil on the outside, poke some holes in the skin, and sprinkle with kosher salt. Stick it in the oven(unwrapped) for an hour at 400 degrees and it’s perfect! Anyway, our waitress was incredibly nice and attentive. Because of her, I’ve given the place more stars. I seriously wish she was my waitress at every restaurant I go to!

Very friendly service, but the fare was beyond ordinary. Typical diner fare and nothing more. It’ll do in a pinch, but it’s nothing to rave about. The salad I paid extra for as a substitute for fries was dismally small and disappointing. Iceberg lettuce never impresses. Over all, it was just ok.

Excellent food — I had a chicken fried steak and my dad had the buffalo meatloaf sandwich. Everything was very good. Service was very friendly.

We stayed 3 days in Custer and ate every meal here-it was that good! The prime rib was perfect. The yam fries perfect! A must try is the buffalo meatloaf. Breakfast was filling and the hot cocoa delicious. The staff was friendly and quick. And the hats have stories. Ask about them!

Looked up this restaurant and was not disappointed. My daughter has a few food allergies and the server was wonderful making sure everything was dairy and egg free! I got one of the buffalo dishes with the brown gravy and it was delicious! Serves was quick and our server was very friendly. If ever in Custer this is a must :)

After a long day of travel we checked into our hotel and found this spot right across the street. We both had the prime rib — cooked perfectly and tender. The sides were good too. Highly recommend the desserts and the local Canyon Cream Ale. Only 4 stars because it was all a little pricey, but I assume it’s because Custer is a big tourist spot.

What a great find! I’m on vacation and was very hungry and wanted to eat some steak and BBQ. I walked into Cattleman’s down the street. While waiting, I read the reviews and heard the people next to me saying their food was not good… so I walked out because I did not want to take a chance based on Unilocal reviews and the conversation next to me. However, this was not the case for this place! Again based on the Unilocal reviews, I came here and had the buffalo meat loaf. Excellent! Fast and friendly service, and very hot food. Great flavor in the gravy, very fresh vegetables and plenty of food! For a foodie, i 100% approve! I will remember this place the next time I come through and will try their breakfast as I have heard their breakfast and brunch is real good.

Went to Dakota Cowboy on the recommendation of Unilocal and wasn’t disappointed! A friend and I decided to share 2 buffalo entrees: the buffalo meatloaf and the buffalo el dorado(at least I think that was the name), a buffalo sirloin served over Texas toast and topped with sautéed mushrooms and onions. Delicious! We paired the meal with bottles of Moose Drool, a local brown ale, which complimented the meal well. No room for dessert, unfortunately. The ambience was also appreciated, as it was adorned with appropriately-themed Western knickknacks, apparel and other items. From the large variety of cowboy hats to saddles and the Billy the Kid poster, you’ll feel like you’re in the wild West!

I guess we should have gone for breakfast because lunch was a real disappointment. We ordered the buffalo burger and the marinated buffalo sirloin that was fried and served with a dipping sauce(a $ 14.75 dish!). This dish had 5 small cubes of meat that were very dry and sweet potato fries. The sauce was just a bottled barbecue sauce. Way, way, way overpriced. The buffalo burger was a frozen, dried out burger that tasted ok. The salad was good though.

We were really hungry right after seeing Mt. Rushmore on our way to Jewel Cave National Monument, and Custer is a seemingly a central town in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. Dakota Cowboy Inn Restaurant is what its name implies: a restaurant attached to a motel that has its share of tourists coming in and out. It was lunch time at the beginning of the summer season, so it was still pretty quiet. I imagine that this place probably gets pretty packed on peak days during the summer but the wait staff was quick to greet, quick to seat, and orders were in and out in a friendly way. I didn’t feel rushed, but I didn’t feel like hanging around. I had a turkey sandwich with a salad(the salad is served on a weird, tiny plate and it’s nothing more than iceberg lettuce with some other typical garden vegetables) and the sandwich was made the way I asked for it. My partner had a bison burger that looked like it was cooked deliciously, medium rare, with sweet potato fries. Desert menu was what you expected: huge brownies with ice creams slathered in cookies with chocolate syrup(or caramel!). In any case, if you’re looking for a solid diner while touring the Black Hills, Dakota Cowboy Inn won’t let down. And you can’t miss the waving cowboy on the highway.
