Love this restaurant precisely because it is «old school.» I happen to think the world has enough nouveau. Those kind of places come and go quickly in the hills; Bavarian inn has been here forever. Furthermore, the reviewer who stated he knew something was wrong when he saw the wait staff was all Asian ought to be ashamed of himself. What does that mean? He requires to be served by fräuleins? That’s just racist and wrong. He’ll be glad to know they’re gone now. The owners of this place are from Germany. We lived in Germany for 2 years, and this is a very authentic experience. The German specialities(schnitzels, sauerbraten, spaetzel and strudel) are excellent. If you want nouveau, go somewhere else!

Not the best food, pretty«normal» and bland. The fish is fresh so that was good but other than that, it’s REALLY old school.

The food was on target but the wait staff was spotty. The menu offered both German and American cuisine, but the restaurant was trying a little too hard to be German. I had the beef rouladen and my wife had the schnitzel. They were both excellent. My only complaint about the staff was that there was a large party and the rest of the patrons seemed to have been lost in the shuffle. Other than that, a quality dinner at a reasonable price.

I stayed at the Bavarian Inn next door which isn’t in walking distance to downtown Custer for dinner. Thought we’d try the on premise eatery. The authentic German food was very good and nearly worth the asking price. Service was not good, but they do employ foreign college students for the summer and not professional waitresses. It was a Saturday at 6:00 pm and they were out of Pepsi/Coke, all draft beer, and the domestic bottle beer I did receive expired 10⁄13. My kid wanted a second dinner roll, which we warned would cost an additional .75. The place is obviously being run into the ground, and I do not recommend going there until there is new ownership in place. I gave it 2 stars, 4 stars for the German food, and less than 1 star for everything else.

Knew something was wrong when all the wait people were asian. Mixed drinks are $ 12 and German beer overpriced. Beef stroganoff served on mashed potatoes with a container of sour cream on the side! Spatzel was $ 5.00 and over cooked. They got the bill wrong, charging us for a even more expensive meal.

We ended up at this restaurant because we were staying right next door in the Bavarian Motel and it was a treat. The food was good, the staff was AMAZING, so friendly and attentive. When we were there, there was a waitress for every table. I’m not sure if this was normal or just because it wasn’t that busy. BUT it made for a very attentive experience. The ONLY thing I think they could improve on is their décor. It was such an enjoyable place and the staff was go great but I felt like it was a bit dated. I think if they could do minimal work and it would improve the feel 100% Give it a try, I was really sad I didn’t get to try their Beef Stroganoff(spelling) but it was to large for me to eat alone and nobody I was with wanted to share. BOO! But we did try their Apple Tart with ice cream which is home made and it was DELISH!!!

Good wings. Beer selection good. Tried a new brew called Fat Tire which I really liked. They have a good selection of German cuisine. My husband and I each had the sauerbraten with red cabbage and mashed potatoes. Having had us dish in Germany and made this myself, this tasted more like roast beef. It could not have been marinated for as long as the traditional dish. We were going to return another night as we were staying at the hotel but we never did. Nice change of pace though.

Spent $ 80 for 4 meals. I had the beef stroganoff which looked and tasted like some kind of canned meat and gravy poured over some flavorless overcooked mashed potatoes. The menu stated it was cooked in a sour cream and mushroom gravy. Um, they had a container of sour cream on my plate I had to add to the dish. Made no difference, it was just gross. I will continue to make my own at home. Stroganoff is a Russian dish anyway. My daughter had the sirloin which although cooked correctly it tasted«sour.» My son’s burger was just that. My friend had some beef roll dish that had a pickle in it. He said it was ok. Comments made led to I assume a manager coming to the table and I said mine was terrible and my daughter’s steak tasted sour but she just said ok” and walked off. Will never b eating there again.

The reviews sent me to this restaurant but the menu and a band blasting bass sent me elsewhere. I wanted to try the cattleman steak house but the reviews were a little off putting. Went there anyway after the Bavarian and it turned out to be a good choice.

I thought the German food here was great! Dropped in for dinner while on a weekend trip to the Black Hills. Such a welcome respite from typical«road food.» I LOVED the Jaegerschnitzel, red cabbage and spaetzle. My husband’s Beef Rouladen was yummy too. And, possibly best of all, the beer menu includes a kristalweizen – a favorite of mine that is often difficult to find(and much-needed after a long day of adventuring). Custer and most of the Black Hills in general are very rustic, so don’t go to the Bavarian with the expectation it’ll be some sophisticate stronghold. Just enjoy the nice people, friendly atmosphere and good food.

If you love German food, this selection isn’t very interesting, and it’s ok but not fantastic. The décor is dated and unkept, dust everywhere, and the staff wasn’t very friendly at all. Dessert was good, but wasn’t good enough to want to go back considering the rest of the dining experience.

The rouladen(sp) was fantastic and the service excellent! Finishing with the apple strudel and ice cream was over-the-top!!!

Uninspiring selection of german dishes — not bavarian ones though. Food is okay but not great. Hope Americans don’t think this is the greates food Germany has to offer. Good beer however. Oh and a funny fact: they decorate with paintings of the Matterhorn — a swiss not a german mountain! Probably just a detail from the perspective of rural South Dakota. :-)

This restaurant is a great break from the typical burger and steak joints that are most common out West. We had the sausage sandwich and the shnitzel. Each plate came with a different version of saurkraut, both were really good — the red one was sweeter and the white more tangy. We really enjoyed the German beer. The highlight for me was the spaezle — absolutely delicious!!! I even took leftovers«home» to the camp site and reheated them in the morning with camp breakfast. This is a definite must stop in the Black Hills if you’re going out to eat. Oh, and service was very prompt and attentive without the hovering that gets on my nerves.

The food was okay, not great. I had the beef stroganoff. It was more like beef with gravy over noodles. I had to add my own(cold) sour cream. The red cabbage was quite tasty although someone who doesn’t like a strong vinegar taste might not like it. My husband had the wiener schnitzel with spaetzel. He liked the schnitzel although it wasn’t as crispy as he usually likes it. If you’re looking for authentic German food look elsewhere.

This is my first ever negative review, but our experience was so bad last night that I need to post this. We arrived at the restaurant at 7:30pm and had reservations. After being seated, it took 45 minutes and talking to the manager twice to get menus and water. Then we were told that ALL of the German food and the prime rib were sold out and several of our beer selections were also sold out. Sadly, we stayed and ordered off of the very limited menu. The POOR service continued and we didn’t get our food until 9:15pm. The staff, by this time were clearing our plates faster than lightning because the wanted to close. We will NEVER eat here again.

I had the Werner Schnitzel with mashed potatoes and red cabbage for $ 16.95. My husband had the Teriyaki chicken breast with baked potato and dinner salad for $ 9.95. the food and service were both good. the restaurant is partnered with the motel by the same name. It was nice to check into the motel, late in the evening and get a good meal without leaving the motel. the restaurant was unremarkable from the outside, but was delightfully comfortable and warm inside. I would eat here again.

This place is a little bit north of town. Food was good, although the«Matterhorn» reuben doesn’t live up to the hype about its size. Beef stroganoff was excellent. Service was OK, but nothing spectacular. Kids menu is uninspired. Youngest(5) had the bratwurst sandwich, which should have been an option on the kids menu. Had apple strudel for dessert that was out of this world. Outside appearance is dated and kitschy, but once you get inside the dining area it’s not so bad. Walking into the main entrance reveals a stairwell and an unassuming set of double doors, which are the actual entrance to the place. This«lobby» is stark, painted cinderblock that reeks of bathroom air freshener(inexplicably, there’s a dispenser mounted on the wall by the door). The experience is anything but welcoming Big picture window overlooking the valley to the south, and the view is marred by a large power transmission line.

Solid 4 stars experience. We’ve tried their wally pike(SD state fish) and were pleasantly surprised with texture and flavor of the dish. Friendly service, they aren’t big on fru-fru cocktails, but my wife’s sidecar contained all the right ingredients with extra alcohol. At any rate, this is one of the better places in vicinity.

We were delightfully surprised by our dinner here tonight. It’s your classic German restaurant although we noticed some non-German dishes like cajun catfish! They have both indoor and outdoor seating. We initially chose outdoor which would have been perfect except the breeze was a bit too stiff and the music was strangely loud out there. We ended up moving inside which was quite pleasant with interesting paintings of Bavarian mountainscapes(we guessed they were not of the nearby Black Hills). The service was friendly and attentive though the entire staff seemed quite young. As for the food, we tried the sauerbraten, beef rouladen and jaeger schnitzel. All three dishes were very good. My wife substituted spaetzle for mashed potatoes and she was happy she did. The default starch is mashed potatoes, which is fine, but more of these dishes should come with the spaetzle. The red cabbage was also tasty. We ended up skipping dessert as we all had monster huge ice cream cones at Mount Rushmore a couple hours earlier. If you want some German fare while in the Custer area, try this place. Price was pretty good as we spent close to $ 80 for four(though we didn’t get any alcohol).
