Recently stopped in there since it has been years since I’ve been there. As a matter of fact(until recently) I hadn’t been there since I was teenager and they we’re only open on Saturday. Long story short I had mentioned to my boyfriend how I loved their chopped beef sandwiches so we stopped on our way to San Marcos. The sandwiches we’re as great as they was 20 yrs. ago. The service was a little lacking. I had mentioned to the elderly cashier that I had grown up in Creedmoor(I’m s Hart). Needless to say very good sandwiches. Just felt service could have been better.

Simply put, this bbq is downright yuck. I took one bite of the brisket, and quickly determined that the brisket was many days old. The bread also had some sort of mold or something green growing on it. The owner had a ton of excuses, but failed to offer me a refund. How they stay open is a mystery.

I drive by Wilhite’s Bar-B-Que almost every day on the way to and from work. I take an alternate route to avoid the heavy traffic on IH-35 during rush hour. I had no idea it existed until I read something about it from Brisketman. It is also kind of hidden because it shares space with a gas station. I took a long lunch on this day to explore Wilhite’s. When I got there, I knew why I have been missing it when I drive by. The sign was small, and the location was odd. I would have never guess that a barbecue restaurant was located right there. The first thing I noticed was the prices. Everything was relatively cheap. I got the three-meat plate with two sides and drink for under 10 bucks. The order came with moist brisket, pork ribs, sausage, beans, potato salad and sweet tea. The brisket was really fatty. It was sitting in a pool of grease on the plate. It was heavy on the salt but tender with a good texture. The smoke was nice but not as deep as I was looking for. The pork ribs were solid. They had a good flavor, and the meat came off nicely from the bone with some resistance. The sausage was an all-beef one that came from Meyer’s Elgin Smokehouse. For being a beef sausage it had a nice fat content. The snap and grit was ideal. The sides seemed like they came from the store. Nothing to write home about. I also tried some of the chicken(not pictured) as well. I could not eat it because the breast meat was so dry. I get why some people like Wilhite’s Bar-B-Que. It is quick, easy, and cheap. You get a lot of food for less than 10 dollars. I could not finish everything off my plate. I was so full. You could easily miss this place if you blink as you drive by. It is tucked away next to a Valero gas station. I could see myself picking up some decent ‘cue on the way home one day from here. They even have all you can eat catfish on Fridays. What is there not to like?

Several weeks ago my boyfriend scheduled catering from Wilhite’s to be delivered today and set up by 4pm. Last week he called to confirm the date, time, and location for the catering. Today at 4 we had no bbq so my boyfriend called Robert Wilhite-Owner-to see what the hold up was. His response was, «I thought that was at 5pm. I can have it to you in an hour and a half». WTF? Even if you thought it was an hour later it’s gonna take an EXTRA30 mins?! Unprofessional is an understatement. If I could give no stars I would. Wilhite’s ruined a very important day for my boyfriend and the«owner» didn’t even apologize for the screw up. I guess the restaurant keeps the weird hours around it owners memory.

It’s true what others have said about the brisket here: It’s typically very tough. So far the best fatty, tender brisket I’ve ever had is at Mickey’s trailer(see my review for Sundance BBQ), parked on Old Lockhart Road near Slaughter Lane. The only reason I come here with any regularity is because I live down the road from it. However the sausage is good and on Fridays they have an all-you-can-eat catfish fry until 9pm. If you go to the catfish fry don’t expect to eat more than one plate full, unless you are an overeater in the first place. They give you literally a mountain of catfish and fries. Not the best-tasting food, but not all that bad either. Generous portions. Burgers are good too. Friendly staff(not sure why there are so many complaints about the staff. they’ve always been good to me, but maybe it’s because I’m from the neighborhood. i don’t know).

This place is awesome, great service, great people, and even better food. I got to talk with the owner Robert who was very friendly, and got to talking with him how he’s the mayor of Creedmoor and all the history was pretty neat. I asked him if he knew about his reviews on Unilocal and he said yea they were brought to his attention and said that he had a couple previous employees that were serving food that should not have been served and have been let go and assured me that he had resolved the issue He then fixed me up with by far the best BBQ I’ve ever had the brisket was fantastic, the sausage was pretty good it’s a Meyer’s beef sausage that had that perfect smoke flavor. He gave me a sample of the pork ribs at no cost that were fall off the bone tender I ended up buying a whole rack from him they were so good. I know this place has had a couple bad reviews but I would take those with a grain of salt because seems like they’ve fixed the problems and I’ve been there twice already and everything was great, and will continue to go back every time I’m in the South Austin area. I highly recommend if your in the mood for BBQ and in South Austin y’all need to go by there and get you some fantastic BBQ!

This place is as inconsistent as it gets. I went 2 years ago and thought it was totally meh. Recently though my favorite BBQ blog gave it a glowing recommendation so I went to give it a try. I can honestly say that it was the third best brisket I’ve ever had in my life. Totally phenomenal. The only better brisket that I’d ever had is the one that starts with«F» and the one that starts with«S» in Lexington. I’ve tried all the others in a 90 mile radius of Austin. Wilhites was the 3rd best. I was super excited to get back. And then today at lunch I was served something that was DISGUSTING. No smoke ring, no bark, freakish color… inedible. No respectable pitmaster should serve something like I was served. I threw it in the trash. I posted a photo so you can see for yourself. The staff there are super friendly. The prices are super cheap. Once I had the 3rd best brisket of my life there. But I won’t be going back.

Best brisket in Austin bar none and they are great for catering parties. Robert the owner is an awesome guy who is willing to go the extra mile for his customers and their catering events.

The old building gives the place a cool, rustic look. However, the food was a big dissapointment. Sausage was good but that’s about it. Both the ribs & the brisket were tough, made it a chore to cut through it. No slices of bread came with our meal. Additionally, it was very hard to get a hold of their staff in order to get those slices of bread, & while I waited at the counter, some potential customers walked out due to lack of service. I know the other review on this place is really great & Maybe it’s better on the weekends(I went during thursday lunch) but if I’m in Creedmoor & hungry for BBQ, I’ll drive the 5 min to Bill Miller BBQ on I-35& Slaughter Ln in Austin. Don’t get me wrong, in my opinion Bill Miller really SUCKS but it’s better than Wilhite’s!

Wilhite’s BBQ is one of those cash-and-carry sort of establishments that truly provides a fine Texas meat and more experience in the early hours of a drawn-out weekend time. Much of that is attributed to the staff, the drive, and the pure location of said eatery. Admittedly, I wanted to take my buddies out here on a Saturday morning to experience what eating Texas BBQ was all about. Additionally, I got to be the first to Unilocal it, so why not? I took a group out there, and I ordered up $ 55 worth of food. For the 8 of us, I figured this was not going to be quite enough, but with a whole loaf of bread, beans galore, and tater salad to supplement our animal protein, it was surely enough. Additionally, the guy in charge took a liking to us and really wanted to supply us with extra sides and the like. The per-pound price is extremely low, and the affordable price point on everything provides for a true humbling meal. We had this after some community-building activities. I mean, brisket at $ 8 a pound is a steal. Also, sausage links are no more than ~$ 0.80 a pop. We got 9 to our order of 1 lb. @ $ 8/lb. You do the math. The sausage was beefier than most. The ribs were smoky, sweet, and heavily seasoned. I enjoyed the smokiness found on these pork entrail-encasing bones. Additionally, the sliced cattle breast had a thick bark on it with a heavy smoke nuance. The potato salad was creamy and smooth with a well-balanced hint of tang. The beans were not the best, but who really needs beans in Texas? Unless they are refried, of course. Alas, I am victorious in having reviewed this before anyone else. I am so happy to have experienced the hospitality and rib-stickin’ goodness that is Wilhite’s. Now, I charge you, brothers, go forth and be bold. And true. And full.

To my knowledge, this is the only restaurant in Creedmoor, located at the biggest intersection in the village. Locally owned, they offer decent barbecue, that, while nothing to go crazy about, is worth a stop. I’ve just about tried everything they have, and the sausage, chopped beef, sweet tea, and potato salad have my vote. Brisket is ok.
