Vail Wine Shop & Tasting Room

For some Coupeville can be a little touristy. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t places that are worthwhile. This little wine shop is great. The selection is good, the owners are friendly and it’s located on the main strip so it is a great place to grab a bottle, sit out on the patio and enjoy the weather while watching both the locals and the visitors wander througg the small downtown. If you are on Whidbey Island, especially on a nice day, it is worth a visit.

Such a great spot! We stumbled in here one day after reading a review and wanting to drink some wine, I’m glad we did. It has become a spot that we go to often and have even brought some friends and family to join too. The place is not huge, which I like, but they do have indoor and outdoor seating. They have an amazing selection of Washington wines and sometimes have small bites for snacks as well. They sell some neat little wine accessories and delicious chocolates too. The owners are so helpful and knowledgable about all of the wines, the winemaking process, and all of the wineries. I always enjoy hearing the information behind the wines that I am trying. I always go for a tasting, as they change every week, it’s always neat to try something new to see if I like it or not. (Usually, I love it all!) They also have a nice selection of beers for another option! My husband and I enjoy visiting the shop, so we joined their wine club! Take a visit for yourself and ask about their wine/​beer clubs, it’s a great option. :)

This place is not large, but the inventory is impressive and the approach is right on for sure. You’re wandering through the Coupeville business district, which you can cover on foot in a couple minutes. Vail is on the water side, with a small patio and then some retail space which is practically bolted to the pier planks. If the tide ever gets too high…
The available shelf space is not much bigger than some big downtown supermarkets’ wine sections. Probably a couple hundred labels at the very most. They consciously and proudly focus on smaller producers that interest them – they’re very sincere in their appreciation for the stuff they carry. From what I know of wine (not too much), they seem to have picked out some really nice stuff.
They run a monthly wine club and a monthly beer club, where everybody gets interesting bottles regularly. They crack bottles in the store for tastings, and you can get pours of stuff to enjoy at the shop. They have a few tables inside and outside as well. They’re toying with the idea of adding draft beer, focusing on smaller local breweries. They cultivate a great deal of business from island residents (presumably both true locals as well as people with second homes), but the wine is interesting enough to grab some to go even if you’re from an area with lots of wine places.

Great wines, great atmosphere, and the owners are really friendly.

I stopped in here today with family while checking out the sights in Coupeville (a cute little town). We each got did the wine tasting ($ 8/​pp for 6 wine tastes). The wines were very unique and the guy did a good job of explaining the different kind of grapes to us. It was a very friendly little shop!

My husband and I are spending a few days on Whidbey from the MidWest and we happened to stop at Vail Wine Shop for a tasting. The owners could not have been more friendly or knowledgable. The wines were wonderful and we got a few snacks from Oystercatcher up the street that paired nicely. Definitely a must-​do!

Awesome wine shop right on the main drag in CoupeVille. Larry and Patsy took good care of us and introduced us to some really interesting Washington wines we had never heard of. They specialize in Washington wines, including some that you can only buy at Vail. I plan to return to enjoy some of the weekend entertainment that they offer.
