Amazing!!! Delicious, fresh fish! Best sushi Ive ever had and I’m a snob when it comes to my raw fish. Sei, Hiro and the other dude(haha) rock!

I think I owe this place a review. It’s literally my obsession. Been here countless times yet I’m still excited to come back every time! Didn’t really want to rave about it, wanted to be «shellfish» and kept it my lil secret ;) Everything Ive tried tasted great. But! My top top top faves have got to be: — salmon belly(torched) — scallop — toro — sweet shrimp — salmon boat — sea urchin /uni — soft shell crab hand roll It does get crowded but the wait is never unbearable. If possible, ask for bar seats. Happy dining!

Tiny hole in the wall place and owner is super friendly! Maybe a little too friendly… We were sitting at the bar and he kept giving us shots of sake and cherry moonshine. A nice gesture but I need to drive home! The food tastes great, fish was fresh and the value is really good also. The sushi combos are a really good deal IMO. Chawanmushi was also super yummy. Will come back, but I’m a little scared of sitting at the sushi bar again.

If you want some legit Japanese sushi, you need to come here. I loved in Tokyo for 6 years and let me tell you this is the real thing. Most sushi places in Southern Cali are Korean owned and therefore have Korean sushi chefs. Nothing wrong with that except sushi originated in Japan and quite honestly, there is a difference in flavoring. Japanese focus on fresh flavors without so much sauces to diminish the original flavor of the fish. This means the selection must be extremely fresh as to not taste a bit of fishiness. This place checks it all of the list. Japanese thru and thru. You’ve gotta try it. Everything is excellent and the level is on par with sushi Roku if you have ever been minus the expensive ambiance.

LOVE the sushi here, and must get their salmon or shrimp boat. Its a tiny restaurant with a handful of seats, but get there early because it gets packed. I docked a star because our sushi chef was not very attentive… in fact it felt almost as if he was ignoring us and trying to avoid eye contact. It was just weird and annoying when all we wanted was some yummy sushi in our bellies.

This is my all time favorite sushi place. I wish I had taken pictures to go with this review but the food is so delish I was just worried about eating the food in front of me. Sushi chef Hiro is very nice and friendly. I usually come here with my girlfriends, but this Saturday I took my daughter for our mommy and daughter day. She said it was the best sushi she’s ever had. My favorite to order is the house special soft shell crab, blue fin toro, salmon boat, albacore tataki, seared salmon, Chilean Sea Bass in ginger sauce and end it with some uni.

Quaint and traditional sushi restaurant. It’s good quality fish but since it was our first time here we felt like outcasts. This is definitely a «locals» spot and as new comers our service was sub par. I love that they cater to their locals but no reason to snub what could potentially become a repeat customer. Unfortunately, even though the sushi was good, we won’t be back. Too many other great sushi restaurants.

Wow so good, came here with my homegirl, we had a great time. Yes the chef takes a while to warm up to you, but once he does he is fantastic and such a character. The sushi was all fresh and delicious, its 1 piece by 1 piece style(don’t come if you eat like a pig, and don’t come if you only eat california roll) you must enjoy each delicate bite. Small bar, so others were buying each other sake and beers, fun if you like that type of environment, not so fun if you dislike strangers talking to you! At the end, chef was making us specials of his choice, I thought we were racking up a steep bill of over 100 for sure, but in the end our total was only $ 65 for two of us… what a surprise! Definitely coming back.

I had been craving sushi during my entire stay in LA for thanksgiving break(namely uni), and finally, we stopped by for lunch here! Even though we didn’t get to go to maruhide for all the uni I could ever ask for, I was happy about our meal here — everything was delicious! This is a super simple, cute and cozy restaurant with a few tables and counter seats; we came here on a not-so-busy weekday lunch hour, but I hear it does get crowded. We were given some menus including a sushi order-by-piece menu. Every single thing I got was SOYUMMY, especially the blue fin toro(we ended up getting two orders: D). It literally melts in your mouth… the cut the chef gives is also quite generous. My bf also recommended the sweet ebi(raw sweet shrimp), and a shrimp boat, which is shrimp they have sliced down the middle and filled with tobiko and a quail egg. If you order ebi, they also ask you what you would like to do with the shrimp heads: you can either have them put it in miso soup, or deep fry it! Of course, I had to get some uni… oh man, why can’t you get such sweet uni like this in new york?! Gotta love a reasonably priced place that serves up fresh sushi!

Absolutely delicious and refreshing. Angotei was perfect for lunch. My lady friend and I had all of Hiro’s attention for a solid 30 minutes. Actually, it took him 30 minutes to warm up to us, but I was happy he eventually did. Personal Interaction is what keeps me going back to anywhere with good quality. This is what a couple of starving men would get for dinner: — Salmon sushi with ponzu and onion strings — pure delicious — Japanese Red Snapper — my absolute favorite — Blue Fin Toro(2 orders) — like butter — Crunch Roll — Shrimp Boats(2 orders) — Unagi — so fresh! This is a place I will keep loyal to in Orange county for all my sushi needs. My heart is happy.

Sushi at its finest! I came here for lunch on a Saturday. Angotei is located in front of Mitsuwa Market in Costa Mesa. Parking is tight so my bf parked in the Mitsuwa parking lot and walked over. The restaurant has about 4 tables and a sushi bar. I love authenticity of Angotei and homeliness. So warm and welcoming! The waiters were nice and friendly suggesting to us the best items to get on the weekend specials menu. You usually only see lunch specials during the weekdays but this restaurant specifically had Saturday/Sunday specials. What a deal! I ordered the chirashi bowl and my bf got the deluxe chirashi bowl + assorted nigiri like salmon roe, uni, and spanish mackerel. Our meals came with miso soup and mine came with an extra item — steamed egg with edamame and scallops. Score! The quality of the fish was delicious and the experience was wonderful. The only thing I’m disappointed over is that I didn’t try the salmon boat/shrimp boat/uni boat, etc. Everyone seems to like it on Unilocal.Next time! Overall, I really enjoyed eating here and I can’t wait to come back again!

It’s a small, small space so beware. We walked in on a Sunday night and was able to snag a table for 2 right away, but not sure how lucky you’d be on a Friday or Saturday night. The food is good though. I thought the sushi was fresh and the portions were slightly bigger than other mom and pop Japanese restaurants I’ve been to. Try the poke salad and the soft shell crab roll!

Really liked this place. Had lunch here a week ago and the fish was very fresh. The uni was super creamy, the sweet shrimp melted in my mouth, and my ankimo was a good texture and taste. Will be back soon.

This is a cute little sushi spot. Came here on a Friday night and there wasn’t a wait but I can imagine it can get crowded due to its small space. I sat at the sushi bar and the sushi chef was so attentive, knowledgable, and kind. We asked him questions about different kinds of fish and he really knew his stuff. The ambiance is cool too: not super fancy but small and cozy with the chefs and waiters speaking Japanese to each other in the background. :) I asked for seared salmon(which wasn’t listed on the menu) and he hella delivered. The pieces were good sized and really fresh. In addition, I ordered the crunch roll which is pricier compared to other crunch rolls you may find but it just might be the best crunch roll I’ve ever had. Looking at the roll, it seems a little heavy on the rice but once you put it in your mouth, you can’t even tell. Everything was be prepared with care and attention to detail. I partnered my food with a large Kirin and hot sake and I was a happy camper. The bill for two(including food and alcohol) was $ 70. I know there are cheaper sushi places in the area but the quality here is better than most and worth the extra bucks.

*Just get the salmon boat and be on your way. Mo’ details below. Also, for the love of all that is good, stay clear of the oysters on half shell and oyster shooters. I was so excited to come here to celebrate a new job. My party got a lot of food, but I got there late so I saw empty plates. While I was there, I got the toro, sweet shrimp, salmon boat, shrimp boat, sweet shrimp boat, miso soup w/shrimp head, some kind of baked calamari, scallop, mushroom medley, soft shell crab roll, salmon boat with uni, oyster shooter, two sapporos, a blue bottle of sake, and a dozen fanny bays. Of the things I ate, I really liked the sweet shrimp, sweet shrimp boat, and salmon boat. The miso soup and oyster shooter were pretty salty. The bed of fried shallots with the slightly oily soft shell crab roll tasted like oil and not sweet amazingness. The oysters were DISGUSTING. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE oysters, but these made me gag. They were so fishy and had wayyy too much ponzu. We sent them back and were not charged. Our sushi chef at the bar was nice, but the service staff was slow. It literally took like 10 minutes for our bottle of sake to come out and 15 for the bill.

I returned here after having not been for a few years with a friend for lunch. It was just as wonderful as I remembered! It’s a tiny spot, so you definitely want to get there before the lunch rush. I got the blue fin toro(one of the day’s specials) in a roll and hamachi sushi. They were so fresh and delicious! I also love how they bring you oranges for dessert after the meal. This place just proves to show that you can’t judge a place because it’s in a strip mall! :)

Came here for a date(met her on Coffee Meets Bagel) though I’ve had this place bookmarked for a while now. Sat at bar and went omikase. Guess this has really become my default for sushi places-omikase. Food is solid. Nothing terrible but nothing necessarily amazing. But the service and the feel of the place is super homey. Let me tell you what was the highlight of the night. My date wanted some miso soup so we ordered some. A couple came in after us and sat right next to us. The gentlemen ordered a miso soup also(after we did) and got his first! My date was alarmed at this and asked the waitress about this. She had this conversation with our sushi chef in Japanese(which neither one of us understood) and our sushi chef told us «ebi» in the soup. So I got it, ’cause he gave me some ebi earlier, I figured he put the head into our soup. He totally did that and it gave a ton more flavor to the soup which my date really liked. I told our chef that this was a great idea, and he looked at me and said in «what do you expect» tone, omikase. I laughed and agreed with him. Yep, omikase every time.

Delicious and scrumptious = DELUMPTIOUS! Tiny place, so come early to avoid the wait. We arrived around 6ish and got a table immediately. If you have a large group of 5 or more, I wouldn’t recommend this place-unless you don’t mind sitting at different tables. Favorite to least favorite: Mix Tataki– seared tuna and albacore salad. Sweet shrimp boat Oyster shooter Black cod Spicy sea bass Scallop dynamite I’ve heard their crunchy roll is one of the best. Too bad I was too stuffed to try it. Next time for sure! Don’t forget to check out their daily specials from the chefs!

Not the absolute best quality sushi you can find in this area, but certainly a very authentic and solid option. The place is really tiny with literally only 4 – 5 tables and the sushi bar, so I imagine you will always encounter some sort of wait. But I like the fact that this is a Japanese owned restaurant with a traditional menu and polite service. I noticed that the selection of fish is a bit modest, missing some of the more interesting types of fish you might find at other high end sushi joints. But all the nigiri that we tried were fresh and satisfying. Surprisingly, my favorite dishes were the non-sushi items like the ankimo, the hamachi kama, and the agedashi tofu. Ankimo is one of my favorite things in the world, and the one they served here was excellent. The big generous chunks of liver were so smooth and creamy you didn’t even need the ponzu and momiji-oroshi. The yellowtail collar was cooked perfectly as well. The next time I come, I would love to try some of their other cooked menu items, maybe more so than their sushi. But I really like places like this. A restaurant with a limited menu that takes pride in all of the dishes that they make. They also serve quality fish without a lot of the pretentiousness of some of the other sushi restaurants in this area. I enjoyed my meal here and I look forward to coming back.
