Ashtabula County, Ohio is undoubtedly the covered bridge capital of the state and hosts a covered bridge festival every second weekend in October for its 18 covered bridges. Most of the bridges are historic, others have been built in the past 30 years. For covered bridges lovers, Ohio and neighboring Indiana are a haven for these rustic relics of a bygone era. Thanks to the efforts of many, not only are they being well preserved, but studies have shown covered wooden bridges are cheaper to build and last much longer that modern metal bridges. To my delight, this has caused several states to begin adding to their covered bridge portfolios including my own state of Georgia with the addition of Haralson Mill Covered Wooden Bridge:
BRIDGEFACTS Year built: 1868 Total Length: 136 feet Frame: Howe Truss Location: Ashtabula County, Ohio over Conneaut Creek FINALTHOUGHTS Reconstructed in 1984, Middle Road covered bridge is ideal as a backdrop for those special family photos. It has a 2 foot window that spans most of the length of the bridge(a feature that was added to the ’84 renovation). That will come in particularly handy for those of you who find the dark interiors of some covered bridges spooky. Enjoy!
