Food was below average even for a dive diner like this. I recently moved to Columbus from Manhattan and this place would not survive 3 months in NYC. I had the Smothered Potatoes and the onions and peppers completely killed this dish. They were seasoned with something that reminded me of worcestershire sauce and I was forced to pick them all out. Sadly, the damage was already done to the hash browns. My wife had an omelet and she could not even finish it. However, my son(5 years old) loved the pancakes. But who are we kidding… it is hard to ruin pancakes and every kid loves pancakes(or at least anything soaked in maple syrup). :) Finally, I did not use the restroom, but I was told by one of our guests that you have to walk through the kitchen to get to the bathrooms. This is not right. We will not be back. Still in search of that good diner experience in Columbus.

This place was not great! I had two burnt pancakes at first and sent them back. I got a second set of pancakes and they were not fully cooked. The presentation of the food was half done and with no care! I did get some money off but I will not be back.

You cannot beat this place for breakfast! I’ve driven past this building hundreds of times over the years but try not to stop due to the shabby area. I mean nothing good could be in a shabby area right, WRONG! You really don’t know what you’re missing until you’ve had it, now I can’t have enough of it. Upon walking in its as if you’ve walked back into time, into a 60’s diner. The customers are obviously regulars as they all seem to acknowledge each other with slight nods as the waiter staff sends them friendly waves. I started off with a coffee. This was good no frills diner coffee. If your looking for your $ 4 a cup foo foo coffee drink then move on Nancy. I ordered the hash & cheese omelette which came with hash browns & toast. Son ordered The Hearty Breakfast which consisted of eggs, hash browns and sausage gravy over biscuits. The food was brought out to us before I was able to get half my coffee drank, in other words they were fast. The original«freaky fast». I’ve never had corned beef hash in my omelette before but after having it here, I don’t think there is any other way to eat an omelette. I’m not sure how my son ate all of his since I was barely able to clean my plate, but clean it we both did. If your looking for your locally grown, heathy light or catchy named meals then get your skinny jeans, loafer and beanie wearing self outa here because you won’t be happy… until you eat the food.

I used to go here when I was younger but for a while they kind of went downhill. After seeing on Unilocal that they had good reviews we decided to try them again. The restaurant was very clean– the service great and the food fantastic! We will definitely be returning!

It’s not much in the way of décor, but the food more than makes up for it! I have lived in Columbus, on the east side, for more than 30 years, and I can’t remember a time when this place wasn’t on Main, I hate to say it was our first visit, but by far will it be our last. Me and my parents went for lunch today, we all ended up having breakfast food. It came out quick, hot, and cooked perfectly. I asked for my hash browns to be cooked extra crispy, and they were done perfectly. Dad went to use the pepper and the lid fell off the shaker. Our waitress was still at the table when it happened, she quickly took his plate away to replace it, and she was back with a fresh plate in a couple of minutes. It is a great little diner. Staff was friendly. Our waitress was quick and courteous. She seemed to be the only one working the floor, but that didn’t interfere with her service or politeness. The food alone was worth 5 stars, but the condition of the parking lot, and the décor caused a star to be subtracted. I can’t wait to go back and try some of their lunch menu items. TIPS: They take cash ONLY! So be prepared. And they do serve breakfast the entire time they are open, for those who don’t get the«Breakfast Anytime.»

This place isn’t too bad. I’ve mostly had their breakfast and their hamburger once. Small burger but pretty tasty. Their breakfast was good but not amazing. We have been going on a regular basis and is never terrible.

I really feel like I have written a review for this place. And then I updated the review. But there is no review. I needed to refresh it anyway, so here I go: I really, really, really really really want to like this place. It’s close to my house, it’s über-casual(and just shabby enough to be that neighborhood place you love), and it’s a diner. I haven’t eaten everything on the menu, but I can say that I’ve almost always been seriously disappointed with the food here. It’s even harder now that I’m mostly vegetarian, too, but that’s not their fault, I guess. The upsides: the staff is always really friendly and the kitchen has proven accommodating; I got a breakfast burrito the other day and asked if I could have the bacon on the side(so I could give it to my husband). They did, and that was cool. The coffee is not terrible. … yeah, that’s about it. I’ve had some of the worst diner food there. I had biscuits and gravy the other day and the gravy was just gross; it was even worse than those foodservice packets that you just add water to. It had a weird translucence and seriously lacked in flavor. My hash browns were unseasoned(as usual) and tasted like they’d been scraped off the grill. I’ve had meals with side dishes that tasted like they were emptied out of the can and onto my plate(green beans especially. yuck). My breakfast burrito had crappy jarred salsa poured all over the top of it and was rolled in a low-quality, chewy-dry flour tortilla and cost eight bucks. I remember the burgers being decent, if you ever just have to eat here. I also hear they do eggs really well. Since I am not an egg person, I have no idea. Half the furniture seems busted, too, which always makes for a great time. And I have to look at the water glasses really closely to make sure they don’t have lip prints on ‘em. Yet, I keep returning here, despite not really being a fan. I really couldn’t tell you why, except that sometimes, the Bexley Starbucks is packed and we want coffee. /shrug

This place is kinda amazing. At first, we didn’t know what to make of Grill & Skillet. We’d pass by in the afternoons and never see it open… I’d say there was a good year that we thought it was out of business. Then we passed by one morning and there was a ton of cars in the parking lot… we were amazed and shouted«THEYAREOPEN!» Fast forward a few months and were were feeling adventurous and wanted breakfast. We were not disappointed. We’ve now been back a good half dozen times over the last six months. We always have a good meal and a good experience. The décor is very 1970s and hasn’t been updated… but that lends to the charm of this family-run business that has been running in this location for something like fifty years. I usually settle on the country fried steak… it is just delish. The gravy is creamy and flavorful. The steak is cooked perfectly and the breading is tasty. It’s definitely on my top 10 list of country/chicken fried steaks. I’ve eaten here with others who have similarly written reviews, so I won’t waste time talking about their meals since they have already… leave it to say that if you come, you’ll have a good meal. Just be sure to swing by an ATM… they don’t take checks or cards. Cash only… be prepared!

I had breakfast here last week. It was okay. Not bad prices either. I wasn’t impressed with the corn beef hash though. It tasted like the kind you get from a can. Not what I expect when I go to a place that offers such an item. The waiter was super nice though. Very polite staff.

A CHILLYOCTOBERMORNING 7WORDS: Don’t you Dare Call it Greasy Spoon Even if it is a simple cash-only grill cook’s dream type of diner and the décor is straight out of 1975 with it’s wood paneled walls and Bakelite feel tables(as well as it’s direct view onto a beaten-up section of Main Street, the people of Whitehall, Eastmoor, and Bexley all claim it as their own. We went in around 830 and the place had a crowd of regulars gathered around the counter. The waitress directed us to find a seat and she’d be with us in just a moment. So we did and she was. Her demeanor was that of a quaint but twangy barfly — which isn’t as snarky as it sounds — it just is what it is. «What can I get for ya, sweetie?» We ordered our meals, both variations on Eggs, home fries, and some sort of meat. I ordered the«Hillbilly» — which included a thick slice of fried bologna. Our meal s arrived in about 10 minutes and our meals were good old fashioned«short order fabulousity» — You know, three items on a plate and nothing more or less. We both would’ve liked the hash browns crisped a bit more, but beyond that, we were both, as usual, members of the clean plater’s club. The real goodness was that the final bill came to 14 dollars and change and we were both full at the end of the meal. So, that’s really hard to beat, even if we tried ordering the same stuff at McDonald’s — and the food wouldn’t have been half as good. And that’s why I’ll always be a big fan of Grill and Skillet and keep coming back for more and more.

Fantastic breakfast!!! Bryant M. and Keith M. have been asking my husband and me to join them at Grill & Skillet for weeks. Finally, today, our calendars jived. The interior is just the way I like my diner… divey but clean. Our server was fast and friendly enough. I definitely wouldn’t call her warm, but we didn’t feel rushed, the coffee kept flowing, and she cleared off the table at appropriate intervals. Now for the food(the real reason your reading this review, right?). It is delicious!!! Now, please note, you are not getting locally grown, organic vegetables here. If that’s what you want, stop reading diner reviews!!! This is just fantastic diner food. I had the ham and cheese omelette with hash browns, a biscuit, and an additional side of corned beef hash. My husband had French Toast with scrambled eggs and hash browns. The eggs were cooked perfectly and NOTHING was greasy. Including Tony’s coffee and my medium OJ, our bill came to $ 22.00. As noted by others, G&S is only open until 2:30 Monday through Saturday and til 2:00 on Sunday. Take that into consideration when planning your trip. There was not wait at noon and parking is easy in their private lot. I’ve yet to follow G&S on Facebook, but rumor has it they are active on social media. Give this place a try!!! Support small business while treating yourself to a good, old fashioned diner meal. No disappointments here!

This is a weird one, y’all… I’ve lived down the street from G&S for over two years and always passed by in wonder. It seemed to have crazy hours — although it touted«breakfast anytime»… maybe breakfast anytime they happened to be open? Idk. It also looks like it might fall apart any day now. In other words, it took me two years to muster up the nerve to go in *and* this day had to coincide with a time when they were actually open. Well, friends, that day was last Saturday. After sleeping till noon(noon!), I grabbed the Mister and we were off to finally try G&S. Talk about a pleasant surprise… Walking in felt like walking back into the ‘60s. Everything is very old and very worn… but not dirty. G&S is a family-run restaurant that seems to be very happy with the status quo, so who am I to argue? Everyone we met was lovely. We saw the mom, but most of our interactions were with the two sons. These guys were genuinely friendly and helpful; we never wanted for anything. They were always bringing us refills on water and coffee, and they sincerely cared about our experience. The food is incredibly greasy spoon — and I mean that in the best way possible. Don’t come here expecting Northstar, y’all. But for a greasy spoon, it’s fantastic. They have breakfast«anytime»(whatever that means), and they also have burgers and diner faves. I opted for breakfast even though it was almost 1pm. I had the Mexican omelette with a side of hash browns. The omelette was huge and flavorful — filled with sausage, cheese, and jalapeños… topped with salsa and served with a side of sour cream. It was delicious and strangely not heavy or greasy. Keith got a chicken fried streak w/gravy and eggs. He loved his as well! When it was time to check out, our bill was about $ 7 each. What a deal! So will I be at G&S all the time? Not at all. But will I totally go back when I’m craving a great diner breakfast? Abso-fracking-lutely.

Old fashioned greasy spoon diner. Good omelets, eggs, home fries– all the things that you want in that kind of place. Prices are good. Service is good. Coffee is not. Cash only. Breakfast all day.

I love this little hole in the wall. Quick, cheap, and good. Only downside is that it is cash only so I’m usually scrounging thru my glove box trying to find stray dollars. I usually get the breakfast sandwich.

Everything here was a mix: Some of the food was good, but part of our order was overcooked bordering on being burnt, while we received eggs which were partly uncooked(egg whites still clear and slimy). Service was very friendly, but the time from ordering to receiving food was too long. The place had a warm, if lived-in, feel, but the seats are very worn.

Been coming here for years, but it seems to be much cleaner, a new menu, and lots of specials. I had the Breakfast Sandwich, comes with hash browns; all cooked my way; for a bargain 5.99 $. Good stuff. Nice people. Thanks for the clean-up! Cash Only.

Really friendly service, but the food was kind of gross. I got a Mexican omelet. The sausage tasted odd, the jalepenos were mushy, and one corner of my omelet was not cooked properly… the egg was still runny. My hash browns were soggy, almost as if the potatoes were just boiled, dumped into a frying pan for a few seconds, and promptly plopped onto my plate. I had asked for them extra crispy, but they came out anything but crispy. The coffee was watery. Cash only. Prices were low, but considering the quality of the food I received, I feel as though I overpaid. I won’t be back.

Nice place to sit and talk. Waitress was very friendly and service was great. As for food, we only tried some of the pancakes and rye toast. They were both good, but nothing special. Toast came out already dripping in butter, which was annoying and the pancakes were quite large – the short stack was plenty to split between me and my friend. Quite cheap for the proportions. Would consider going back again if I was in the area, but I wouldn’t expend energy to get there.

Staff was friendly and the atmosphere was perfect for having a conversation with friends. They offer a wide variety of omelets, pancakes, hash, etc. I stuck to my usual steak and egg along with perfectly crisp bacon. The bacon was honestly some of the best I’ve had recently. If you work at or near DSCC this is perfect place to grab breakfast before a long day of work.

This is one of my new favorites in the Columbus area. Really friendly and it’s obvious they all care very much and are proud of what they do. I compare it to my other favorite, the German Village Coffee Shop but easier to get into, just as cheap and less hectic. Never had a bad meal here. CASHONLY. I learned this the hard way, even though it says it pretty clear on the door, which I didn’t notice. They nicely told me just to come back before they close and pay which, being from Chicago, floored me!
