Whether you’re here for work or play, Cummins has a few thousand square foot museum in the lobby. Take a gander if you’re into automotive technology and are near Columbus during the business day. One engine is shown in an exploded view. All the parts of the engine are hanging from the ceiling on small rods. It looks like an exploded drawing of the engine in three dimensions and built with real parts. Diesel race cars? Yes, there are several on display. There’s also a diesel-powered 1930s Auburn sedan. Check out its horsepower rating when you’re there. I’ll bet this thing weighs 5,000 pounds! No tractors,(as in ‘tractor-trailer rig,’) are displayed. Historic, early engines manufactured by Cummins are shown. Some have valve springs and rocker arms on the outside. There’s a massive V-12 or V-16 and a bronze sculpture of the same engine in front of the building. There are modern engines, used in trucks and generator sets, on display. Everything but the fuel filter cartridges are Cummins. Even the serpentine belts say ‘Cummins’ on them! Again, I was gawking at connector technology. The new diesels all have a standardized, 24-pin bayonet connector hanging off the side of the engine. This must be the interface for the engine management system. Are connectors and interfaces for Caterpillar and Detroit Diesels the same? The building is easily wheelchair accessible. The kiosk you face on entry is staffed by a friendly security guard. Guards have a sheet of paper that helps visitors navigate the displays.

Cummins newest building in Columbus is known as the COM building. This one has touch-free bathrooms, nice showers, and(rumored) a place to store your bike. Chairs are nice and modern design is pleasant. Vending area has fridge for your lunch, microwave, and sink. No cafeteria here, but it’s very close to downtown restaurants and COB which has a big cafeteria. Park in the nearby COB lots or the parking garage across the street. First 3 hours in the garage are free. Hopefully Cummins will get a validation stamp soon!
