My experience with House of Color was horrific. The owner Katelyn is unprofessional. The environment is cool but cluttered and messy. There are kids running around. Don’t get me wrong I love children but not when I am trying to get some relaxing time in for myself. I felt like I was not up to their standards personally therefore I was not treated well. I am only giving them 1 star because Unilocal makes me. I will not be returning to this place and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Love, love, love this place! Samantha is the best. She helped me go from brown to blonde. She was the only person I could find who was willing to do it and she did an amazing job. I love the salons atmosphere, everyone there is great!

I must be going through some kind of midlife crisis because out of nowhere I just wanted a dramatic change. What better way to exhibit the freak of my quiet side by dying my hair some punky color. So I watched a few educational Guy Tang Youtube vids, browsed on Unilocal, found House of Color and called them up and they were able to accommodate me for a last minute appointment. I told the stylist on the phone that I wanted silver lavender, and immediately the stylist gave me the reality check – that my black virgin hair may need a few sessions of color to get that shade. So I decided that I couldn’t wait and needed to get on it – sure enough the first session was the big fat reality check. I had to settle for a deeper purple violet instead of the silver lavender, but I was fine with that. The stylists do live up to the name of the salon as hair artists at the House of Color. Apparently, one of the hair designs was featured on MTV. Check out the photos here on Unilocal and Instagram to see for yourself. Talent all over the board! For my hair, Kasey my stylist, used 3 shades of purple and although her background is primarily in cutting hair, she was able to paint my hair with skill. However, I gave 4 stars because I was originally quoted $ 180 – 220 for my balayage hair color and trim. I know I have long thick black hair, thus ended up needing 2 bleaching sessions to pick up the vibrant purple pigment so I estimated that I would pay at the high end of this quote. But the cost ended up being $ 55 over the quote… at $ 275. My stylist was nice and gave me a 10% first customer discount. Including tip, I ended up paying over $ 300. The original $ 275 price just seemed steep so I felt for that price, I would have liked a bit more maintenance advice or sample hair care products especially being a first timer. Your first time will likely be a huge investment that may be over the quoted price, just a warning to future clients who have similar hair quality and color, Overall, I still am a big fan and will come back since I got tons of compliments on my hair color. It’s been several weeks, my hair still feels healthy so I am assuming high quality products were used which makes me feel a little better about the pricing.

I love love love this place! I’ve been looking for a cool fun salon that isn’t outrageously priced since I moved here. This is definitely everything I wanted from environment, style and the fun attitude of everyone here. I’ve also been looking for a stylist that I really«click«with and is good with color. I totally found that today with Jenna. Jenna is rad and I feel she really cares about her clients. The salon? Very clean and lots of cool art throughout the salon. Their lay back shampoo chairs are awesome. Everyone is so nice! I’m so happy I came here!

Best Salon in town hands down!!! My usual stylist is Katelyn, but everyone there is extremely talented with hair. They all specialize in color and especially balyage. Their prices are extremely reasonable for the talent in the salon. Want celebrity looking hair that’s flawless? I’m sure you do. My hair has never looked so good since I started seeing Katelyn. She’s my hair goddess for life!

I had my hair cut done by Becky. Just moving here from another state I have been searching for someone to do my hair. I found her on Instagram and after seeing some of her work and reviews for a while now, I was very excited to get an appt with her! She absolutely exceeded my expectations! It’s been a long time since I have had a stylist listen to what I want and what I don’t, and actually walk out happy. She was seriously magic and cut it exactly how I in visioned it. I can’t wait to go back for some color!

Katelynn has been doing my hair since 2009; before finding her I would jump from one stylist to the next having never found someone I was happy with. She listens to your concerns and she is a perfectionist, so she would never let you leave with even a minor imperfection. Her color skills are truly phenomenal!!! My color was always rich and long-lasting and my hair looked and felt healthier than before! Everyone would ask me who did my hair, literally, everywhere I went. I HIGHLY recommend House of Color to anyone who wants to stop searching for the perfect stylist; they are HERE!

Katelynn was my stylist in San Antonio and was by far the best I’ve ever had. She’s AMAZING with color! She turned my dishwater brown into the most beautiful red I’ve ever seen. And to top it off — she’s so much fun and really provides an «experience» like no other.

I love House of Color. The salon has a light bright atmosphere and great energy. Becky Stout is an amazing hairstylist. I took her a color of nail polish and she was able to match it exactly to color my hair.

I’ve been a customer of Katelyn William’s(the owner) since 2014 — a few months after she moved here with her family from Texas. At the time, she was at Eden(where you can still read the reviews left by her clients while she was there — all of them are 5-stars). She has already built up her clientele(yes, she’s that good) to the point that she opened up her own location here with a team of other talented artists this month(Oct. 2015)! I’ve had other stylists who told me it takes about 5 years to re-build your clientele after you move. I think the fact that Katelyn already has a strong enough customer following and network of like-minded professionals to open her own location speaks to her incredible talent and character. Anyone you go to here is going to be great, and they also will have an art gallery at the location, too(which I’m really excited to see). |SERVICES| I’ve only had my hair cut and colored(highlights, balayage, ombré, color correction, etc.) so my review only reflects those services. But they also offer a bevy of services including: updos, extensions, makeup, men’s cuts, classes, facial waxing, etc. But you know you’re with a great stylist when other artists come in to ask their advice during your appointment, right? That’s Katelyn. Her station is always grand central. When I started with Katelyn, I ran across her awesome work on Instagram. Up until then, I’d been going to the same stylist since I moved here — after I spent a good month researching local stylists, calling and asking for photos and everything.(Yeah, I’m one of those people.) She worked with me over text to give me a quote and set up an appointment. I came in and had some things going on that were pretty complicated. My hair had been bleached out to the roots and then two other darker blondes were layered on top. And six weeks later my dark brown roots had grown in. She analyzed the situation and got to work. It came out great — natural looking and you couldn’t even tell I had root growth that was night and day. Everything Katelyn’s done to my hair since I’ve absolutely loved and always received compliments on. People constantly touch my hair. I eventually went different shades of red. And then back to a blonde bayalage … and then blonder. And last time I asked her for something fun that we’d be able to tame down if I had to go into corporate(I telecommute), and we went with a light lavender at the tips and brown at the roots. She always has the best ideas and executes flawlessly. If you’re looking for an alternative salon or alternative stylist Katelyn and any of the people here are good bet! I wish I could be more adventurous and take advantage of some of the AMAZING color combinations she does(mermaid hair, rainbow, silver /grey, blue, purple, green, pink — EVERYTHING). But she does everything flawlessly — from naturals to brights to pastels to in-betweens — whatever you want/need for your life. Check out her Insta for more: Katelyn is(and the other stylists here are) always up to date on current trends and education, too. And when my hair decided to dry out and hate me, she helped me get it back to a good condition. |COSTS| I REALLY appreciate the fact that Katelyn doesn’t price gouge like some other salons and independents in town. She offers incredible technique for reasonable prices. It’s actually something she really emphasizes: providing quality hair services for reasonable prices. I think some stylists/salons forget that services charged in other areas of the country reflect cost of living there … and we live in Colorado Springs. I know my company pays different rates depending on the cost of living in the area(i.e., someone in NYC is going to be paid more than someone in Colorado Springs because the cost of living is more there). And that has a trickle down effect that impacts how much I can pay for different services. Katelyn gets that. The last time I went in, I had a trim with a root touch-up and all-over long highlight, and it was ~$ 85(not including the tip). |LOCATION&AMBIANCE| I love that House of Color is so centrally located — Garden of the Gods/I-25! She just opened House of Color in October(2015) so they’re still working on putting the finishing touches on everything, but it looks great! It’s a huge, open concept area with modern flair. All the stylists I’ve met here so far are so nice(no drama) — which I totally appreciate. Actually, right now most of them are girls who worked at Eden, and they’ve always been super sweet. But who wants to be around negativity and drama while you’re strapped to a chair for an hour or more? Not me – and Katelyn doesn’t(nor do any of the other stylists) tolerate that. And the area with all the stations is open concept to foster a collaborative and educational environment, which I appreciate as a customer. And I can’t wait to see how the art gallery develops, too!
