Great service. Great good. My favorite is the Butter cream prawns, house chow mein, and the sizzling rice soup.

My husband and I went for lunch at the Clovis store and were pleasantly surprised at the deliciousness of all the items. The food is outragiously good. We will go back again soon.

This is the second time eating at Hunan. The first time it was so so, I had the orange chicken lunch special. It was average but good enough to make me want to come back. This time I decided to order something different, the spicy garlic chicken. I figured this would be a pretty good dish. Well I was very very disappointed with it. There was no trace of garlic or SPICY at ALL. It was very salty and bland tasting. Okay so I figure maybe ask for some chili oil on it to make it spicy. I asked for some chili oil and it was not spicy at all! It actually tastes just like the chicken, not spicy at all and very salty. Why is there soy sauce in the chili oil? Ugh! Oh the other hand my fiancée ordered sweet and sour shrimp and it was so so. But why so many inconsistencies with their food? I have no idea but I do not recommend eating here, ever.

Let me preface this review by saying I’ve never had Chinese food I’ve «liked» before. My family used to tease me as a kid by saying they’d buy me Chinese food when they kinda wanted to piss me off. I’ll eat if if I have to, such as in social settings where I’m practically forced to because Mrs. A didn’t raise a rude little bastard, but it won’t ever be my first choice. My predisposed apathy towards Chinese food(and the fact that I’ve only eaten here once because I don’t like the type of food well enough to give it a second chance) is probably the only thing that saves this review from being 1 star, though honestly it shouldn’t because good food is good food, no matter what kind it is. Don’t get me wrong– I LOVE Thai, Vietnamese, Lao, Korean, Japanese and Hmong food, but for whatever reason Chinese food has always been extremely bland in my experiences with it. This was the case tonight, even though I tried to do everything right. I happened to be in the area, and didn’t feel like fast food so I checked out Hunan because of the positive responses from Unilocalers. I ordered off of the Chinese menu, even ordered a specific dish a Unilocal member I completely respect and usually agree with recommended in his review(Kung Pao chicken, Chinese style– and I even specified to do the dude– SPICY.) I had gotten my food to go because it was COMPLETELY empty inside despite being Friday night(which kinda worried me) and they were about half an hour from closing. Anyway, I get home and grub on it, and… Nothing. Kinda dry and chewy. Not much flavor. I guess they interpreted«spicy» as «throw a shitload of those dried up peppers on it,» because the chicken itself was not spicy at all. Not impressed with the flavor, either. There was nothing about this dish at all that distinguished it from Panda Express really, to me. Hell, at least with Panda it’s cheaper and I can smother it with chili sauce and hot mustard to make it somewhat spicy. I mean, maybe since they were 30 minutes away from closing, they were short-staffed in the kitchen? It’s possible that maybe the dude that took my order up front also cooked my food– I mean he DID disappear into the back, but it was after I saw him input the order into the computer… I dunno. I won’t make excuses for them, but shit, they must make SOMETHING right here at least SOME of the time, otherwise they wouldn’t be so highly touted around here, right? Consistency may be an issue at this restaurant. If it seems like I came down especially hard on this place and that it should’ve gotten a 1 based on what I said, well, usually, that’s how it would go. If this were most other restaurants, I’d hold off on a review until I tried a few different menu items before the judgment call, but it’s RARE(as in, this is the first time) I actually CHOOSE Chinese. Maybe the ridiculously bom Lao Café(which I’ll review after another visit or two) that I had for lunch earlier totally burned off my taste buds, but this place is absolutely nothing special and tasted like any other generic Chinese restaurant, in my humble opinion.

Got take out Chinese chicken salad. It was a pile of sad lettuce, hard chicken and dressing for $ 8.00. It tasted horrible. I called and they said too bad! Nothing we can do. Horrible customer service and bad food!

Best Chinese food in Clovis hands down. Pork fried rice was really good with large very tender pieces of meat. S&S chicken was also very good, tender and crispy.

America does lots of great things, like starting Unilocal for example ! BUT, the one thing that America,(not just Fresno or California) can’t seem to get right is the Chinese food, especially authentic Chinese food, authentic Chinese food in America is as rare as unicorns or santa. Im not even sure most americans know what real Chinese food is anymore, can’t blame them, its Panda Express’s fault. Before I brag on, please remember to ask for the Chinese menu and not the American menu with orange chicken when you order here, unless of course you’re in for the typical Chinese american experience which by the way you can get at the cheesecake factory. Im not trying to demean Americans in their Chinese palate and take a laugh at, rather just in my derision saying that finally hunan has stepped up the game and tries to be one of these rare Chinese restaurant that serves a not bad authentic version of Chinese food that I can actually enjoy and call Chinese food for once. I forgot to aforementioned that I am from Malaysia where real good Chinese food is in abundance, so pardon my critical assessment when I speak of Chinese food. Conveying that hunan is the best Chinese restaurant ever in Fresno/Clovis would put me to the depths of hell for committing perjury, I would say that the real Chinese food here, on their second menu(Chinese menu) is actually as close as I can get to real Chinese food and the taste although not amazing is actually quite good. Before I go on to commenting on food, let me raise the point that this restaurant has a beautiful and artistically asian decorated atmosphere that is perfect for dates and a group gathering. The service although not perfect is actually quite good, they could improve on having a happier vibe and possibly preempt customers expectations(for example bringing a soup bowl that was absent when my soupy clay pot dish came), but not a serious issue because they did make sure my water was always topped up. Their prices was a little higher, but for the huge portion and the gorgeous interior, one should not complain. For my Chinese experience I tried the $ 12.49 sweet and sour fish(the chinese style) and also $ 13.49 pork intestines with tofu in clay pot. I do like the sweet and sour fish for it was deep fried and topped with a brown sauce cooked with bamboo shoots and onions. The sauce had a very authentic chines flavor and had a very smooth silly sauce perfect accompaniment for the fish. The fish in my opinion was too much like fish and chips, where it had too much batter, I would have enjoyed a crispier version with the sauce. The pork intestine dish with tofu was delicious and spicy to my liking, however I felt that the fried tofu didn’t really bring out the color for this dish, a soft tofu would have been a better pairing, I was confused with finding the pork and the tofu, it was the same color. The dish although delicious was seriously oily, to the point that, if I accidentally dropped it into the ocean, it could be considered an oil spill disaster. I do love the pork intestine and the texture of it, it was perfect and gave the dish flavor. Overall I may have made a less than smart decision on my order choices, maybe I would have to try a different dish here next time. However I would admit that Hunan is a great place to have a close enough authentic Chinese food experience if you order from the Chinese menu.

I have been coming here for a while but I spilt my time up at both locations. They have the best lunch specials around I swear. Extremely good value for your money. At well under $ 10 you can get the best spring rolls, side salad and soup with your entrée. One of my favs is the Kung pao chicken but ask to get it «Chinese style«that means it is the authentic version if you can handle the spice. The spring roll is the only authentic version that is not oily despite being deep fried that I have found in town, so they take great care to get things right My only gripes is one of the waiters on several occasions has reminded us that they like to close sharp at 2 pm on weekdays lunch and it puts some pressure on you to finish up. I don’t think management knows about this… But I will still support this place loyally

I guess I was expecting some good«traditional» Americanized Chinese food, and was excited by all the positive reviews, so the wifey and I finally were able to give it a shot last night, and the overall experience was… off? I don’t know how else to put it. The experience was just off. Inside is sparsely decorated for a Chinese food restaurant, but that’s not exactly off-putting to me. I wasn’t impressed with the cheap paper napkins used for dine-in or the lack of soy sauce. I believe that if you’re going to have a dining room, paper napkins are a big no-no(unless you’re fast food or a BBQ joint). When I sit down to dine, the first thing I want to do is spread out a fresh napkin across my lap, but their cheap paper napkins weren’t good for much. The menu offered some very interesting choices including a prawns dish made with strawberries and cream, and several lamb dishes. Not exactly Chinese, but I thought that maybe the Chef was onto something with the lamb, so I ordered the Mongolian lamb. We also ordered egg rolls as an appetizer, my wife ordered orange chicken and we ordered chicken-fried rice. We were excited about trying the food. A very odd thing happened about two minutes after placing our order. Our chicken fried rice came to our table. Mind you, we had literally just place the order, so we were expecting our appetizer before receiving components of our dinner. Not just that, but their fried rice looks like anything but. Looks didn’t lie either, because upon tasting the fried rice, it was obvious that it saw neither a grill or soy sauce. It was like white gummy rice tossed with scrambled egg, peas and carrots and old dry chicken. None of the ingredients were meshing together in anything that can be considered«good,» and the chicken tasted like it had been cooked the day before. Dry, chewy chicken mixed in with gummy white rice and scrambled eggs with no flavor. It was a major disappointment. A few minutes after we received the fried rice, our egg rolls showed up, and they were actually very good. Perfectly crisp and expertly rolled served with a sweet dipping sauce. I would order those again. Then our entries came out, and they both looked beautiful. I dug right into my Mongolian lamb, and quickly realized that maybe I should have stuck with something from the traditional side of the menu. It just didn’t work, and the lamb was trimmed horribly. More than half of my meat was the lamb fatback. With rack of lamb, that fatback is valuable because it locks in juices, but sliced into paper-thin slices and hot-seared in a wok, it becomes chewy and greasy. My dish wasn’t very good. My wife’s orange chicken was okay though. She commented that it had way too much breading though, and the piece that she gave me to try was indeed over-breaded. It was over-breaded to the point of the breading being chewy like a piece of sourdough would be. No crispness whatsoever. Still though, good flavor. One final gripe is that the kitchen needs to slow down a bit. Between the time we placed our order and the time our final dishes arrived was no more than ten minutes. We barely had time to get halfway through our appetizer before the food arrived, and we were expecting the fried rice to be served when our dinners were… not before the appetizer. Overall a big«meh.» I might be inclined to give them another shot in the future, but I’m certainly not rushing back. If I do return though, I won’t be ordering anything«highly recommended.»

Terrible food. The almond chicken I got tasted like the chicken had been made earlier(maybe day before) and reheated. And there is NOWAY the egg rolls are made fresh. They tasted like pre-packaged frozen egg rolls reheated. Worst $ 18 I’ve ever spent. My 2 year old wouldn’t even eat it, and she eats crackers off the ground at the park.

I’m new in town and this Chinese place had the best rating, so I had to try it out. The food was mediocre. My orange chicken was too dry and chewy, like it was old meat and they reheated from leftovers. The dry beans were over cooked and soft. I should have known it was leftovers when they said my order would be ready in 10 minutes.

My mother… The worlds most pickiest eater, LOVES this restaurant. By far the best Chinese in the CV, and top 3 overall best in the CV. The food is made to order, nothing is over seasoned or over cooked. A pleasant blend of flavors that are at a perfect temperature when they come to the table. For a recomendation– check out the strawberry buttered cream prawns. Or the potstickers… Unreal.

I rarely write reviews, but when I do, it’s because of an exceptional service. I honestly don’t care about a wait time, taste of food, and other things as long as they are good enough. Look, there are kids starving and dying from hunger, yet you complain about the taste of food? If you are gonna review, review about the reastarant environment and their service. I am reviewing because our server thimsim had the best recommendation for me. I always ask the server, «what’s the most saucy, juicy, and has a lot of seasoning, I don’t like dry food» boom, he brings out two dishes with a huge surprise targeting spot on my taste. Don’t listen to what’s good or what’s bad from other people’s reviews, it’s or subjective. Ask what you like and they will bring it for you, they know these food better than you do! At least our server thimsim did. I hope you read these reviews thimsim. Thanks for making my experience amazing here.

The food here is AMAZING! We like ordering the House Special Dinner which for two is served with soup, salad, and potstickers for an appetizer. Fried or steamed rice. The fried rice looks fairly nondescript but has a deep flavor; hot pot chicken which includes mushrooms and also an amazing taste. Tonight it was a bit salty, but our meal still good. The star is the butter cream prawn. If you only eat one more thing in your life, it must be the butter cream prawns! Service is OK, but the food more than makes up for it.

Ive been coming here basically yearly since they opened. The chef competed in the Bocuse D’Or or basically the high end culinary olympics for those of you who follow food. For example Phillipe Tessier of the French Laundry will be going to Lyon France in Jan 2015 for the next edition with the help of Thomas Keller, Grant Achatz, and Gavin Kaysen(a previous contestant), so it’s serious cooking. Why he ended up in Fresno im not sure however i get the benefit of his traditional Chinese cuisine when visiting. Be aware there’s an Americanized menu and a traditional Chinese menu for the more adventurous. Five spice smoked fish, tea smoked duck, shredded cabbage in chilis, Hunan lamb, spicy string beans, boiled fish fillet in hot oil are some of the traditional good dishes. Theyve recently expanded and redone the dining room and i think the capacity is something theyre not used to yet. However the food is still awesome and is a step above the common Chinese American joints all over. 4.3 stars
