This little spot off the beaten path was a pleasant surprise. Had some family and friends in town who were craving soul food nearby and every option that we were going to try was closed. It was that time of day that is too late for lunch but too early for dinner when a lot of places close before reopening for dinner. Well, we stumbled across this place and when we walked in the owner greeted us with a warm greeting. He was really nice and explained to us all of the dishes. He even helped me brush up on my Arabic! He has your soul food staples: mac ‘n’ cheese, collard greens, fried chicken, baked turkey wings, sweet potatoes, and some other options. The vegetables were all vegetarian. I was surprised because normally people add smoke flavor to their collard greens by adding a smoke-flavored meat. His greens had great flavor without the meat(I’m a meat eater but I appreciated the options for vegetarians which isn’t always easy to find with some of the good dishes in authentic soulfood). The owner let us sample pretty much everything before we bought it so that we could know what we were getting before we ordered. My crew had pretty much all of the options that I named above. I was a bit disappointed that the fried fish wasn’t an option until we were almost done with our meals(he ran out before we arrived and had to make more) but I still ended up buying some on the way out any way and it was good. I did appreciate the fact that the food tasted fresh and the fish coming out while we were there was an indication of a quick turnover of the food items. One thing that I was not a fan of was the corn bread. I like mine a little sweeter and more moist. This cornbread was more more dry and not quite sweet. Some people like it like that but that’s not my preference; nothing some honey and butter couldn’t have helped though… I think I’ll suggest that next time I go. If you’re in the area and need a quick soul food fix that won’t break the bank, this spot is A-OK!

On the way to pick up my mom for lunch, my boyfriend and I passed this little restaurant in a little strip shopping center off Brockett Road. I had not noticed it before, so I told my boyfriend that we should try it out with Mom. When we arrived at the restaurant, there were two open signs and two doors. I tried to open the door beside the big«OPEN» sign, but it was locked. I then saw people in the restaurant, so I tried the other door with a smaller«OPEN» sign and found that it was open. I’m just telling you about this, so you won’t think the restaurant is closed when it is open. I was told that they had just opened the restaurant. It’s a quaint little hole in the wall. Orders are placed at the the counter where you can see all options before placing an order. Mom had fried chicken with collards, black eyed peas and cornbread. My boyfriend had fried chicken, black eyed peas, cabbage and cornbread. I had black eyed peas, collards, macaroni and cheese and corn. All meals include a drink and bread. We enjoyed all of the food. What I really love about this soul food restaurant is that all of the vegetables are totally vegetarian and they are delicious. There was tons of meat options. The day we visited the meats included fried chicken, backed chicken, turkey wings, fried fish and some other meats that I can’t recall. The macaroni and cheese was the only thing I didn’t love, but the only macaroni and cheese I really love is my own. It just wasn’t quite cheesy enough and the pasta was a little mushy. Our bill totaled about $ 19 for all that food. We had plenty of leftovers, so we had them for dinner. Service was extremely friendly.
