Spices of India(SOI) is one of the few options in OKC as far as South Asian food-stuffs are concerned. But it’s not remotely the best option in terms of prices. There are four or five other smaller stores that will often have better prices if they happen to have the same item as SOI. SOI’s customer service is friendly(for Indians), but as I’ve mentioned on their previous business page, some of the staff seem ill-equipped to answer any questions. In fact, it’s almost better to expect a «deer in the headlights» look so that it’s a pleasant surprise when you don’t get it. Suhas B. also makes some excellent points about the overall quality, and how we’re a bunch of suckers for paying so much for ethnic food ingredients because OKC isn’t a large hub city. If you are the type to travel to Dallas often, start buying your stuff from the stores in the DFWA area. I frequently get a Samosa to go(for $ 0.99) on the way out. Rasoi Chaat Café(owned by the same people) being next door is an added bonus.

One of the disadvantages of staying in Oklahoma City is that there are hardly any Indian stores around to get the basic stuff for cooking at home. Spices of India is one of the few«desi» stores around and they manipulate this situation pretty well. Yes, you would find most of your Indian/Bangladeshi/Pakistani fixes here but you would also notice that they are all overpriced. Extremely overpriced. If you are aware of the Indian prices for some of the items like I am, you will most likely throw a fit looking at the prices here. However, I am still willing to pay that premium for them if it weren’t for the next problem. Most of the stuff don’t have expiry dates and if they do, you should, under all circumstances, check them. I have actually found stuff that have best before/expiry dates from 2011 or 2012 which after having paid a ridiculous sum and consoling myself that there is no other option around makes me really, really angry. Unfortunately, this is the only store nearby to get most of the Indian stuff I need so despite the rating, I will be back. If you can afford the trip, go to Dallas and you will find much better stores than this one. Also, the joint next door has samosas for around 99 cents each and they are great. I normally get a couple of samosas to go from there and they help reduce the disappointment of shopping in this place a little bit.
