Sushi Mura has a mild review on Unilocal so I thought maybe give it a try. The experience turned out to be AWFUL. I ordered the Chirashi sushi(note: they don’t even call it don, so I double checked it if comes in a bowl.) it came in a plate-bowl but that’s fine. The fish was good but the rice was tasteless. By saying tasteless, I mean no taste at all. No vinegar. Not even the taste of rice itself. Also the rice was extremely hard, like no moisture at all, so I doubted it was leftover. When I asked the waitress why the rice tasted no vinegar, she said because it’s sushi rice. Excuse me??? Sushi rice = vinegar in rice, right? Then I asked again and she said they don’t put a lot of vinegar cuz people don’t usually like it. Excuse me??? This is a whole joke. Oh btw, did I mention that the waitress tried to take away my salad even though I hadn’t even finished it???

If I order delivery, I have an expectation that my food be delivered to my door. Especially if I live on the first floor. Especially if it is raining. If it were nice out, I would have walked to pick up my food and not paid extra for delivery. Don’t call from your car and pass me food through your window. Customer service and courtesy could use some work at Sushi Mura

BYOB is the attraction in a strip filled with bars. You will live. It’s a Maki and Maki place with plenty of cream cheese and sauce. SALAD — comes with every order. Nice touch. Somehow, the dressing was bitter. Could it be just me? NABEYAKIUDON — the soup version of Thai fried rice. Spinach is the acceptable veggie. When you see cucumber, onion strips, and carrot strings, you get suspicious. The veggies are perfectly chopped, they just don’t belong in an udon soup. Few pieces of fake crab is trying too hard to be legit. Plain boiled egg. How un-Japanese in many ways! SHRIMPTEMPURA — why o why would one put them on the soup? Soggy Batter with a barely there shrimp. It’s popular when crunchy. SERVICE — pleasant with a loong pause in between even though the room is empty. The girls are busy though. The good part is, they will leave you alone for an extended amount of time and you have time to invade a Boom Beach base. VENUE — elbow to elbow, and butt to table tight with quick clean up.

This is our favorite sushi place in Chicago! The staff is very friendly and always does an amazing job. We order special rolls, and of all the times we’ve been there, we’ve never had the same thing twice. The special rolls are literally works of art. We’ve taken everyone we know here and highly recommend it.

I’m a little disappointed in this place. I feel like it lacks good management. I don’t like the music the play or the décor and the foods is just ok

Decent sushi, no service. How many to-go boxes do they fill between each house order? The practice is obvious(the kitchen is visible from the dining room) and really quite insulting. The stats: 3 rolls, 2 hours, 1 appetizer. Shame.

We have been coming to Sushi Mura for over a year. Thankfully we are neighbors to these guys. We have never been disappointed. The staff and su chefs know us by name. We feel special every time we dine in or carry out. I went to Sunda last week and was overly disappointed by the service but most importantly the sushi! I walked out paying $ 44 for rolls that jewel osco made look good. Our sushi is always handled with care with exceptional presentation.

Lately in my world, Sundays are for sushi. It’s become a zen, meditation-like experience to hit up a sushi joint around 2 – 3PM when it’s completely dead, bring a book, and completely chill out. Living in Southport Corridor, I think I will be coming back here more often. Server was attentive, and the chef was wonderful to talk with. Food came out as it was made(which was nice since I’m able to eat $ 50 of sushi just by myself). I’m a picky eater, so when I hit a new place, I generally stick to the basics unless something truly pops out at me. So I went with the California, Tuna, Salmon, and Yellowtail rolls, with some nigiri on the side. Aside from the rolls being a little rice heavy, it was exactly what I expected and wanted in my go-to sushi place. I’ll be looking forward to going back here again when I’m not in an adventurous mood and want to stick around my area.

Ok… I was not happy with size of this place and the temperature which directly impact the food and experience. What do I mean? My fish was warm which is both wrong and hazardous. The sushi bar is right in front of the stoves. The rolls were poorly made. They used wayyyyyyyyy too much rice. The prices are not worth the rolls in my opinion. On a positive note, I did love that they offer hand rolls and their Beef Maki was awesome! Though that’s pretty sad for a sushi place to have a meat dish that is better than the sushi/fish. Btw, the sushi bar doesn’t allow you to see the sushi being prepared. Too much going on. What’s the point?!

Definitely will not be coming back. Sushi was very mediocre. Definitely expected a lot more from this place by the sound of the reviews. One of the plates with the rolls had a HAIR on it and the waitress stated that it must be from the seaweed. Really??? Definitely looked like a hair. They made the roll again and this time without the hair. That was enough to make me decide that I will not go there again. I have been to cheaper sushi places where the quality of the food was much better.

I had a great experience here… it smelled a tiny bit weird but I got over it fast. I had the spicy udon and it was amazing… our waitress was great. attentive and fast. No complaints I would definitely come again!

Just really, really average. Not bad, not great. The wine list is pretty poor but you can BYOB with a corkage fee on weekends. I dunno, I guess I had a sushi craving and afterwards, I still craved sushi– it was just so meh.

The sushi is great, but the service is so slow that it made my soul bleed. We’re going to be late to our movie. Everyone was a mess. We spent ten minutes eating and forty minutes waiting, and there weren’t even that many people there.

May the Sushi gods have mercy on this health inspectors dream. My roommates and I live steps away from this place and have gone on occasion– enjoying the mediocre sushi– we couldn’t really complain. That was until last night when we ordered take out– and opened our meals to find a CHEWEDPIECEOFGUM just hanging out in our appetizer. After a few giggles of disbelief followed by a series of gags– we decided to walk back down to the restaurant and share our findings. The chef proceeded to come out of the kitchen, take a look at the gum and say«no one was chewing gum here.» Basically we just wanted to give the guy a heads up to chew with his mouth closed. Honestly, the department of health better Mario Kart their way to a mushroom boost and get over here ASAP so no other unfortunate soul has to experience this. Never will go here again. Not even if the entire world burns down in an apocalypse and this is the last place for food. Amen.

I had no problem with the quality of their sushi, although my girlfriend’s bento box(veggie) left much to be desired(aka she came home and area frozen pizza). My biggest problem was that the service was so fast that nearly EVERYTHING came out at the same time. We need time to eat the soup/salad before the sushi is brought out. Because we were so rushed, we weren’t able to enjoy the experience or the company. This was especially annoying since we each brought a bottle of wine to last brought the evening. TL;DR Good food, bad service.

So we came because we saw that this place was rated 4.5 stars. Seriously ??? My GF ordered the teriyaki bento box: chicken was overly cooked. Rice was also over cooked(if it’s eve possible to over steam) I had the sashimi plate and the quality was good but quantity sucked for the price. I’m going back to my other place.(See my other ratings). Very sad about this place. I should have gone down the street and got my steak at Tango Sur.(Another place in love.). I came here with my friend who was craving Japanese food. She currently lives in Iowa so she wasn’t too picky as long as the place didn’t serve Chinese-Thai-Japanese food. Seems like a common thing here in the Midwest. We each ordered a bento box. The food was decent but nothing special. My rice was mushy and soggy though. Bleck. Overall, okay food if you’re in the area and want passable Japanese fare.

My girlfriend coined the phrase ‘pubsushi’ to describe this place. The atmosphere is odd to say the least. Obviously a converted pub, you are greeted by a cheesy as seen on tv singing bass at the door. No joke. Actually thought about leaving at that point but gave it a chance. We ordered green tea and were given big olé Action News style mugs of bagged tea. The sushi was good but more expensive than better places. Edamame was of the frozen bag variety and overcooked. Mochi was straight from Trader Joes and four timest the cost. Sashimi was actually pretty good as were the rolls. And service was attentive. Likely will not go back despite it being within blocks of our place as it is not the experience or atmosphere i want when getting sushi. Maybe if the sushi was awesome i could get past it but it is just above average. Barely a 3.

I have tried many sushi joints in Chicago and always end up coming back to Sushi Mura. Sushi Mura is reasonably priced and their sushi is great tasting. They have specialty maki that are a bit pricier and they also have your basic maki. I am gluten free, and imitation crab is not gluten free. One of their rolls that I love(Dynamite Roll) is filled with imitation crab. Even though their menu says«No Substitutes,» they allowed me to sub the imitation crab for tuna for a small fee of $ 1. The atmosphere at Sushi Mura is stellar. It is a small-medium sized, cozy place that is not too loud on weekdays and allows for conversation among your party. The staff is knowledgeable and does their job, and the sushi chefs are friendly as well.

Sushi is still good but sitting inside I felt extremely rushed this evening. Don’t think I’ll be a regular customer as much. The waitress was very very flighty. Before I even realized I had a salad on the table she asked me if I was going to eat it or if she could it save it for another customer? I really enjoy ordering out but probably won’t continue to bring my friends in for another dining in experience. –ordering out is something I do about once a week. The chefs are so friendly and I’ve never been disappointed from take out. Just a bit frustrated with dining in…

Dang, I am 0 – 3 for sushi places in the surrounding neighborhoods(see my previous reviews for Hachi’s Kitchen and Hanami Sushi). First off, $ 7 for corkage fee? Second $ 35 for a sashimi platter? The pieces were not as fresh, and the tilapia sashimi looked a little suspect. I’ve had way fresher and better selection of sashimi for platters that were cheaper than this at other places in Chi. We also gave the Dragon roll a try, but there was something about it that was off. I was only able to eat one piece. The service was friendly, prompt, and attentive, but couldn’t make up for the lack of quality product. My stomach felt a little funny later than evening, but it could have been psychological given my past experience at a similar place… ahem Hachi’s Kitchen…

I was told I had to come here from my friend who lives out in La Jolla, but travels to Chicago often! We had the Gyoza, Phat and Sassy and a special roll that starts with an F(Sorry I didn’t write it down and its not on the online menu!). The rolls were amazing and really good size! Fish was fresh. There was 2 of us and that amount was perfect. Service was good. Very low key and casual place. I’m not from Chicago, but would recommend it to all of the residents AND people visiting!

Finally checked out the sushi up the street! It was Thursday, so they charged us a $ 7 corkage fee(the don’t charge you Sunday — Wednesday). We ordered these rolls(in order of my preference): Temptation JBD Phat & Sassy They could have been rolled a little tighter and there wasn’t much to the rolls(there was PLENTY in the Phat and Sassy… good thing, because it’s $ 18). All in all not the best sushi I’ve had in this city, but it warrants a return someday. Sit outside if you can — one of the only sushi places in the area that has a patio!

I dined here last week with the hubs for the first time. He had gone to the Cubbies game and we were looking for somewhere to dine after grabbing a few beers. We stumbled upon Sushi Mura and I’m so glad we did! We got a bottle of wine(service was so quick we couldn’t even drink it all! And I drink a lot of wine at a very steady pace). We started with the chicken gyoza. Tasty app that I’d get again. Then, the rolls. OMG the rolls. We got 3 speciality ones: Hot N’ Bothered(spicy tuna, avocado wrapped with tuna and wasabi tobiko) Don’t tell mama(tuna, super white tuna, spicy white tuna, crabmeat, avocado, radish and eel sauce) Phat n’ Sassy(white tuna, salmon, spicy tuna, wasabi tobiko, avocado, eel sauce) What can I say– I love eel sauce, avocado and tuna. They were all so different though and very unique to anything else I’ve tried. I don’t usually order speciality rolls because you pay $ 15+ and then the roll isn’t much bigger than an $ 8 roll. That is not the case here! The rolls were 12 pieces each. We totally over ordered but we managed to put it away. The sushi was fresh. I loved it! My only reason for not giving 5 stars is I feel like with so many sushi joints, that would indicate that it’s superior and that I’d seek it out among all others. That is probably true when I’m in Wrigley but time will tell if it becomes my go-to spot! Highly recommended.

Sushi Mura is my go-to sushi place since I live in the area. I’ve been dining here for years and the service and food is always great. They have creative rolls with cute names. I’ve tried most of the maki rolls but my favorites are: –Bear’s Roll: Fried white tuna, cucumber, crabmeat, spicy mayo, wrapped with salmon and white tuna –White Dragon: I don’t remember exactly what is in this roll, and it’s not on the site. It has white tuna on top though. yum! I looove the little salad they give you, too. I think it has ginger dressing but it’s so so good. I like how they give you a tangerine after the meal as well.
