Sadly, S&S Deli is now closed S&S, I hardly knew thee.

The food was medicore. I ordered from grubhub and didn’t recieve all of my food. When I called the woman kept saying that the food was delivered. I kept saying I didn’t get it all. She put a man on that said I already received the order. Needless to say I will NEVER order from here again. I wanted soup because I was sick. The soup was one of the things that never showed up. The delivery was way too high and I was not satisfied.

S&S makes a pretty solid sandwich. I was on my way to get something else and decided to hit here up instead. I was a bit surprised by the inside as it was a corner store when I walked in. I ordered a big beef and a small cup of chili. The sandwich was packed with roast beef and the beef was very good too. The Chili was pretty good, but it was more saucy then it was chunky. I was able to get both of those for slightly over $ 7 after tax. Very affordable and very good overall as well.

Placed an order after finding them through Grubhub. Got excited that I didn’t have to walk out in the cold to get a simple tasty sammich for lunch, and then spend the rest of the time sleeping because I’m coming down with something and want to nip it in the bud ASAP. Guess not. Ordered about 2 hours ago, after being promised it would be here in 30 minutes. Called a while ago asking where my food was, and was told that there was no address matching the one I had given. After taking like 10 minutes to figure out what I was talking about, and being handed off to another person to speak to. Oh yeah, so where I’m working is imaginary? And the phone didn’t work? I very very rarely have bad things to say about places, but really dudes, get your act together or try to remedy the situation. I dig that after complaining they agreed to not charge me, but that was kinda their fault anyway.

After reading the other reviews, I decided to take a gander for myself and see if this place really did live up to the ratings(it also helps that I live 3 blocks away). I went in there on a Friday and I had this bad feeling. Normally I listen to instinct but for curiousity’s sake I pushed forward. Like others have said on here, this place is small and dingy. Not that small or dingy is bad, but I cannot say much good about this place. The service is pretty slow, but courteous. Going back to that instinct I had upon entering, I kept thinking to myself, it’s Friday right around lunchtime and why am I the only one in here? I ordered the pastrami rye and some soup. The meat itself was layered on, but not as generous as I had anticipated from other places. For a 5 dollar sandwich with a pickle spear sans chips, there was definitely more to be desired. When I got home, I opened the container and started to eat half the sandwich. I realized the meat was rubbery and tough. It’s like on the Flintstones episode where Fred is gumming the sandwich because the meat was not at all chewable. Then, I had a faint memory of that chicken salad sandwich I had bought at a gas station in the middle of nowhere and it might have had a bad expiration date, but it was still yummy and even edible. I wish I could say the same about this sandwich, but I could lie to you or myself for thinking that. I had also ordered the broccoli soup. It was bland, overly salted and missing uhm yeah, broccoli. If you’re in the area, keep driving by. This place is a definite miss. They need to rename this shop, because by calling it a deli is a complete insult.

I’m not changing my overall rating of S & S Deli, but after quite a few more visits, I just wanted to point out that the pastrami on rye is a gift from God. The service is slow as hell, and I think the ownership may have changed(used to be a white guy, now an Indian family). Regardless, all of their meats are Vienna Beef, and the pastrami on rye is a 5 star sandwich! The amazing thing is how much meat they pack into it for only $ 4.99!

The sandwiches here are pretty good, not a huge selection but they have the standard deli sandwiches. One big plus is the price, you can get a sandwich with vhips and a drink for well under $ 10.

S&S is the bomb. I heartily recommend the Reuben, and the Sammy Special. Both are delicious sandwiches. And cheap! I’ve also had the chili and man that’s pretty good too. I’m not a big chili person so coming from me this is a big deal. S&S is a true family business, you can easily strike up conversation with Sammy or any of the ‘regulars’ that hang out there. Show your cubs allegiance and you will instantly make a few new friends.

i love this place. i discovered it because it is a block up the street from Pumping Station: One, and thought it would be convenient to grab a sandwich and some caffeinated beverages from there. it’s such an unassuming little gem. the sandwiches are tasty. the meat is fresh and piled high, and i can get my sandwiches with real Dijon mustard. it’s also a blast to talk to the owner whenever i come in there. i’m in there once or twice a week, and i never leave there without a big smile on my face.

I was recommended to this place from a friend and I just finished eating my sandwich and it was in word delicious. When I walked in there I didn’t know what I wanted and I described to him what I liked and he recommended the Italian and it was awesome.

It’s a real deli! In Chicago! I always rode by this place on my way to work(love the stretch of School St. across from Brands Park) and wondered if it was any good. Finally stopped in before softball practice and ordered an Italian sub – fine stuff. Also had a pleasant chat with the owner, who had warned me about how hot the giardiniera was(he didn’t lie – yum). Great little family business that I’m going to support every opportunity I can.

Located just a block away from my secret lair, I get here about once a week minimum for some fresh made sammiches. The owner is a really nice guy and the indicator of urban culinary quality: cops eat there too. I really wish they had russian dressing so I could satisfy a Rueben craving at the drop of a hat, but in time perhaps. The only thing that gets to me is that when they heat up the sandwiches they’re already wrapped in the paper, so when I tear into it, the cheese has caused half of it to stick to the paper. They also use gonella bread, and I asked the owner where he gets it by the loaf, and he offered to order me a loaf of marble rye. =D

My husband is obsessed with this place, he’s JR L. you can read his review below mine. JR took me here for lunch on Saturday and now I can see why he is in love with this place. He seriously goes here at least 3 times a week for lunch. The owner knows how to make a mean sandwich. I had the Doctor’s Orders and there was SO much turkey pastrami in my sandwich I could barely finish my last bite. Everything was layered on perfectly and he wrapped up the sandwich so well. You get a deli pickle with your sandwich too, not some wimpy pickle that most restaurants serve up. If you are going on a picnic in the park in the area, stop here for a nice deli sandwich, you will not be disappointed! There is also soft service ice cream at S&S. The soft serve is excellent they have chocolate and vanilla. We were treated to a soft serve cone before we ate our sandwiches. It was hard to eat dessert before lunch but some how I managed. The owner is the nicest man and I cannot wait to go back! I almost forgot to mention that my sandwich was just around $ 5. You cannot beat the quality of the meats and cheeses that are used for that price.

In the neighborhood of Avondale, you have your Kuma’s and you have your Hot Dougs… I have a really good feeling about this place. To begin with, it is also a convenience store. But don’t let that deter you from the deli. The enthusiasm behind(and in front) of the deli counter is what really sells the place to me. One of my favorite things to do is ask what the person behind the counter recommends… From other places normally you’ll get an «uhh. I don’t know, I don’t really care enough to try and answer that question.» But here, the guy energetically started interrogating me about what I like in a sandwich– and THAT is what I liked most about the place. The guy behind the counter took the time to chat and figure out what I wanted. When I saw him putting together the sandwich I literally said in my head«Wowwee! That is a LOT of meat!» And it was, I showed my co-workers. I will definitely be going back again(probably tomorrow) for lunch, it was that good!

Saw this place on GrubHub for the first time this afternoon and, after discovering it hadn’t yet been reviewed here, thought I’d give it a go, esp. because I’ve been hunting for a new deli-type place near Logan Square for a while now. The deli is inside a convenience store on the corner of School & Elston. In addition to tasty, extremely cheap sandwiches, they’ve got hot dogs, ice cream, soup, and a pretty great selection of everyday items– wide variety of beverages, household staples, AND reasonably priced cigarettes. The guys running the place are super nice as well, and they pack your sandwiches up very nicely making them easy to travel with. V. nice atmosphere– I’ll definitely be going back to try out some more sandwiches, but for the time being, Fred’s & the Italian are my recommendations! Really enjoyed this place!
